You use a single insulated container instead of a double container recommended by feral cat sites. Is it warm enough for all-winter use? Does kitty stay outside all the time or part-time? What part of the country are you in? You have only one door -- any problems with predators trapping cats?
BTW, you can buy a heating pad for outdoors cats; K&H 3093 Extreme Weather Kitty Pad goes for $37 on Amazon - I've used them outdoors in cardboard boxes for 3 winters. They don't overheat.
Suggestion:There is a non-electric heating pad that you warm up in a microwave called a Snuggle-Safe. They look like a frisbee. They will stay warm for up to 8+ hours under a blanket or towel, and are hard plastic, so they can be washed in hot soapy water if necessary. I used it during a Canadian winter for an outside cat that I was assisting. They work really well and last forever if you use them properly. No risk of fires or overheating.
aww that is so smart and such a cute cat! But what happens when it rains?..is the heater thing waterproof? Or do you just have the cat inside when it rains?
Hahdy -Thank you for your video. Made modifications providing real shelter for a neighbor's cat "Scooter". Reflective insulation in/out/bottom. Did not to use Zilla heating pad (thermal damage can result from not being vented on bottom, spoke w/ Zilla) instead K&H Lectro Soft Outdoor Bed (small). Did use: Zilla Temperature Controller 1000 watt Thermostat . Sterilite 19481004 45-Gallon Latch Tote AmerTac 71382CC Forever-Brite Nite Lite, petsafe plastic door (small). check Amazon.com). Thanks!
i ve noticed that cat bed or a pilllow works better hen sweaters ...these get all over the place and cat does not sleep on them in the end...love Your house
This is a really good idea, but what about light? It seems like it would be very dark inside at all times. Is there away to maybe put in a small window?
@SamTheCat369 ...I've noticed my cats like it dark and enclosed (they feel safe and unseen), but i can see where a window or (very dim) light would let them know that no other critter has invaded their house.
I love you and God bless you for taking such good care of your LUCKY kitty!!!
You are also an awesome builder! I have a similar deal, but not as good-looking---and I need to get the cat door instead of stupid hanging blanket. THANK YOU!!!!
THANK YOU so much!! We have a semi-feral cat living outside our house, and we've wanted to give him a warm shelter for the winter -- something he would like and use. We followed your simple instructions, put a couple of treats inside the house, and he walked right in, as if it were completely normal. "Of course, naturally this is my house!", he seemed to say. He really likes the house, thank you so much!!
Thank yo uso much for sharing this very resourceful solution to keeping our outside cats warm! I have an outside cat, Greta, who use to be completely wild. She adopted us 10 years ago. She refuses to come into our house when it's cold. We have tried many things to keep her warm and have been pretty successful, but this looks so much more solid and effective! Thanks so much for sharing!!! We are going to copy your idea!
I made this exact box except I heat it with a r-zilla night black heat bulb and a zoo medTerrarium light bar to hold the bulb... works great, I have it on a timer and when its around 35F outside, inside the box stays around 75F.. cat loves it, gonna make another one for the others!
There are ALOT of caring people who have ferrel or semi-ferrel cats who live outside thier home. I have had one living outside my house for 10 years now. She refuses to come in. She is too afraid to. It has been a challenge to find ways to keep her warm. why do you have to be so nasty?
Thank you kindly for sharing this wonderful idea --- I just build a much needed heated cat house for my feral kitty. He's happy and I feel good knowing that he's warm. Thank you!
My mom said one of our cats froze last night :( I just built three temporary cardboard houses. A box in another box with waddled newspaper surrounding the two boxes.
I'm not sure if it matters too much, but you have the heatpad in there upside down. The sticky side is meant to face upward (because it's meant to stick on the underside of an aquarium). You may want to flip it around to get more heat going up.
That's a nice little cat house! Some people just don't care enough to provide shelter for their outside pets, so it's always nice to see someone that does. And while cats don't generally require a heated shelter, as long as they can get out of the wind and have some good bedding to nest in, it's always best to have some type of heat source for those occasional prolonged ultra cold days.
Bet you got laid after building this for your girlfriend, lol.

I agree a basement with a heating lamp behind a cage by a cat box would have done better I think. :)

I did a similar build using a large insulated cooler and a small kennel heating pad. I like the door you used. Thank you for sharing the info,
