Its not thunderbolt before summer and its a $500 upgrade. :/ I understand its not UAs fault but having to use a proprietary console seems very cumbersome, even if effects don't have to be printed.
@StatikWave yes that kind of sucks :/ but then again most synths are equipped with USB so that does the same thing. minor flaw, and then again it is old technology and it might be good that we're moving on. you can always use it through something with midi usb connections!
@mpeskett depends entirely on the type of the mixes you are making. for basic home recordings and plugins that ship with DAWs, yes, you can get pretty far with the computers own processor. but if you're using UAD plugins and adding for example NI instruments and other stuff here and there.. you quickly run out of power since they require quite a bit of it. The onboard processors on this are for UAD plugins.
@mpeskett one word, LATENCY.You eliminate latency introduced by round-tripping the audio signal via FireWire or USB connection to the computer and back to the audio interface for real-time monitoring. When the Thunderbolt upgrade becomes available then my point will be moot.

Do we really need to outsource DSP these days? With i5s and i7s there's an enormous amount of CPU that's untapped probably 90% of the time.
