I think this movie really shows the pure horror of war. I kinda feel bad for the Swedes because not only that they lost a lot of lives in the 18 th century, but their country is humiliated for their loss against the Russians in the Battle of Poltava. But this happened 300 years ago, so I guess Sweden is in good shape now.
@Shirozarusama dude you're wrong, cause of this war "Great northern war" Sweden restricted into peace more often, and that's why were the most succesful country now in the world.. If we would've won this war, Sweden would most likely be like shitty Russia or something :p

no it wasnt uncommon, it was fairly common actually. A soldier dyuring this time wouldn't risk it since as you know the muskets were very inaccurate and had to be reloaded after each bullet, looking away not risking your eyes to get hurt by the exploded powder was standard to do
@VVilliam88 It would be very nice to see a real made movie about the battle even though I'm Swedish and it was one of our kings that lost. I'm studying this part of history right now, and Karl XII was not a fool how just improvised like that, he had his own maps that he used from his bed from which he was laying hurted. Even though the battle was completely lost it would be nice to see some real history in it
Most Russians didn't even have shoes during this battle. Sweden lost because we marched straight into a crossfire, and the cavalry was stuck in a marsh 15 km away from the battle.
Yes Russia won this battle, but there are so many inaccuracies in this film it's stupid.
Watch the Patriot and watch this, and you'll notice exactly the same sound effects from the screaming men to the gun sounds. They even turn their heads away when they fire like in the Patriot.
@aceblazer25 haha!? turned their heads away as in the patriot? wtf? every dude did that during this times since there was a risk hurting your face if one of those weapons go wrong
@wepper5, no dude, musketeers in this age were taught to at least look in the direction they were shooting. The actors turning their heads away was specifically put in by the Director for safety issues because they used a magnesium compound that was much brighter than black powder. It's all about artistic license.
@aceblazer25 umh no? even if black powder or magnesium was used it's still dangerous having your eyes open like that, in real war, there was a great risk for the weapon shell to explode in your face that's why they looked away right before fireing
@wepper5, Having a musket explode in your face was uncommon unless you used too much powder, or a broken musket. People firing live ammo from flintlocks or even matchlocks today don't look away. 17th century drill books specifically mention giving the soldier time to aim during the "Present", and the Prussian drill advisor to the Americans in Revolution actually replaced "Present" with "Take Aim". Again the Director wanted more smoke, and he used stuff that flashed very brightly in the pan.
@hevehoc I am not Swedish, but I know a small amount of Russian and have the cryllic alphabet memorized, and the accents kinda made this scene a bit awkward to watch.
That was the first great victory of the Red Imperial Army created by Peter the Great, soon, russian soldiers became famous for their courage and ferocity in combat
@JACB123AA Courage? Well the tactics of swedish Carolans was not to fire untill thay saw the white in their enemies eyes. Furthermore, russians used the "scorched earth tactics and not to mention the harch winter wich caused terrible losses to the swedish army. Also the king was wounded and the sweish cavalry went lost before the battle, the swedes didn't have anny guns either. If these misstakes hadn't been done meaby the battle would have ended differently. Red army? yeez...
@swedo88 lol >.< What a bullcrap :D:D:D Dude your version of this battle is:

The swedes where never ment to end up in Poltava at all. They where to march to Moscow. Now as to the propaganda, I haven't watched the whole movie, so I'm sorry if I was writing arrogantly, it's just that I don't think it's propaganda, I think it's MISTAKES by the director who just wanted money from a famous battle and didn't care details. + There is many accounts of the battle. @TehBunnehz I believe any movie depicting a war is by nature propaganda, because its generally told favoring one side and is told by people who typically are relying on old historical accounts to re-enact, which are also hopelessly biased by the authors of those accounts. History written by the victor is a true statement. Any WW2 war move, Civil or revolutionary American, French Revolution, Napoleonic, 100 years, etc..all the way back to homosapiens and neanderthals fighting with clubs
@TehBunnehz I do not believe comment on war and history subject to a freshness date, and your own judgement of what is worthy comment hardly qualifies as valid, so kindly eat me sir....eat me with a silver spoon.
@aiaek The Swedes had about 10, 000 less troops than Russia's Peter the Great had. And their commander, Karl XII was injured and could not effectively command.
@Soriori No no I definetely dont think that. Oh by the way I didnt write the comment you responded to. It is kind of propaganda because for example in part 2 of this video when like 200 swedish soldiers fire their weapons only 5-10 russians die. And then when the same ammount of russians fire their weapons 2 entire lines of Swedish soldier drop dead. Just an example ^^
@Soriori you know .... it's just that in each Russian and American movie, there is this ONE guy who kills quadropillions of people and anyway, the enemy allways looses a 100 times more soldiers ...... just that I guess.
I like sweeden uniforms! Actually british (red coats )and sweden ones are my favs!
It was great times even solders wore such beautiful clothes. Though I think it was very uncomfortable in battle, especially the hats. thank goodnes our solders didn't wear wigs.
I Kinda like the Sweden Army uniform at that time . But i always thought that blue are the army of French and Usa later on ,but i never know Sweden also wear blue
@JerkyBeef37 nah Sweden lost :( but if you read into the war itself.. Sweden got jumped from all sides she was running low on man power but she was woupin that ass. her soldiers and king were very brave if she had time to fight one country at a time theres no doubt in my mind she would of won the Great Northern War. but as its not the case Sweden lost the war. but if you look at casualties and losses Swedes lost very few but inflicted heavy losses on the coaliton forces.
This is a pretty accurate portrayal of Poltava. The Swedish lost because they were slowly being killed by disease, raiding Cossacks, and the Russian Winter before Poltava. They were outnumbered, had less supplies, and unlike the Russians, were not wrested. Nonetheless, the Swedes were very valiant, though it came at a terrible cost, and Charles the Twelfth, a great warrior king, suffered his only major defeat at the hands of Peter the Great.
@pkart7 very true but Peter was very lucky.. and like any smart commander attacked at the right moment. but in my mind although the Swedes did loose the war they won in my mind. the Coaliton suffered heavy losses and on the battlefield were destroyed over and over. Sweden just didnt have the Manpower to keep going.
i`m swedish so it kind of bugs me to see these video... o though there is some very good effect. if this movie where american made everyone would have heard of it... its kinda sad :)
This gives the impression that the odds were stacked against the russians. They certainly weren't. Peter cleverly out-manuevered Charles into a place where he would have numerical superiority.
@Vuvenz ridiculous comment, in those times Sweden was extremely powerful country or empire, they even had colony on US east coast. Swedish army was one of best in those times.
And yes, us hating Russia for the way they're showing off this battle is ridiculous, watch the other parts, this is a fucking propaganda reel, it's nothing like how the battle was.
Two interesting things shown in this video: Swedish grenadiers actually lighting and throwing grenades and Russians (?) firing them from hand mortars. Neither detail is usually shown in movies.
@sewagedweller nope british lost toan american army supported supplied and reinforced by at least the french and prussians, and the spanish too. plus others.
in the war of 1812 the americans got pretty hard hit. the british even burned the white house.
only the treaty of ghent which restored land holdings to prewar conditions.
>Look all at all those angry russians and swedes.
Nah, there angry sweds only. Stil can't "forgive" their lost. Though 300 years is more than enough. And russians... russians has no reasone to be angry, because: 1) we won (;-P to sweds, hehe); 2) look at the political map
Famous, may be. But because PR, not because their strength. In fact UK never had strong land forces that could crush continental empires. The only goal, where they could (even in modern day) have success, -- papuas countries, small and almost defenseless in comparison with empires.
@Nitrorus im more referring to the strength of their inffantry during the napoleonic wars, specially the peninsular campaign. though, true, their navies were arguably their greatest asset.
Where is this? Mmm... in Spain? I'm sure you know that the main campaign of that war was in Russia. But their (englishmen) main battle is Waterloo, no doubts. If you'll let me to make the remark, this battle was 4 times smaller than Borodino: Waterloo -- Napoleon with 72K men and 243 guns, Wellington with 68K and 159; Borodino -- Napoleon with 135K and 587, Kutuzov with 120K and 640 guns. At the campaign's beginning Nap's army was about 600000 soldiers.
>The Swedes were pretty terribly outnumbered at Poltava, 2 to 1.
Because battle near Lesnaya, where they lost a half of 16k Levenhaupt's corpus and all their artillery (swedes had just 4 guns at Poltava). Though 2 to 1 doesn't mean fail. By the various data A. the Macedonain had 1 to 10 against persians, but defeated Darius III. It's beacuse greeks used advanced tactics and weapons (appropriate to their tactic).
thats true nitrorus.i am from greece but i have to say that greece is not as big as the other countries but fights with her soul in order to gain her freedom.
>Who ever that fag is lying on that bed is a big coward!!!
Ahaha, are you from US? Bwhahaha, that "fag" is Karl XII the Great, their... guess who. :-) He was injured by pistol shot (at least in the movie, in reality he was also wounded, but not sure that it was a pistol). That's why he was out of battle, though every time before his place was in first lines.
I think one of the reasons why Russia won the war was because they got attacked and used the same strategy they did against Napoleon and Hitler.
Also the swedish population was not as big as russia. So sweden did not have a lot of men left to fight. Sweden even hired mercenaries to help. If sweden had a bigger population and army, they might have won or LOST we do not know that.
Yet sweden won some battles against Russia short-handed. So suck it Russia!
>I think one of the reasons why Russia won the war was because they got attacked and used the same strategy they did against Napoleon and Hitler.
Retreat wasn't a tactics. It's because enemies were really stronger at the start, especially Napoleon and shitler. Yes, common number of rus. army was the same (or even a bit bigger) than N. or S. had, but enemies CONCENTRATED strike armies, which outnumbered defense groups dislocated on the strike directions.
I like how the Swedish King just sits on a bed the entire battle. When in fact he was on a horse riding with his troops accordning to most historybooks. As he was also on a horse when he called the army to a retreat. Due the fact that he was ridining although he had been shot in the foot was one reason to the myth that King Charles XII could not be killed, that he was under the protection from god. But I guess a bad russian movie has got the story right.
@Sneezen He was lying on a stretcher carried by a number of horses but it was destroyed during the battle and his soldiers helped him get on his horse.
Peter the Great charging into battle was no doubt very brave and very foolish. If he had been killed, the russians would have disintegrated and Karl XII would have his victory. But Peter was lucky, he had been shot three times during the battle but survived.
Why cant they do an movie about the battle of Narva? Sweden had 10.000 Soldiers.. Russia 80.000.. Sweden won an amazing victory!!! Only 600 dead and 120 hurted.. Russia? 40.000 Soldiers.. 10.000 dead and 29.000 captured..
Then after it when Karl was heading for Moscow the ruskies made pussy tactic starving the swedish army..
@SwedenArise Well, this is up to Swedens. :) Just go over it, you were winning first, then you lost. It's life. And every country mostly make films about victories, Russia is no exception.
it takes guts to sacrifice yourself for your king

@TehBunnehz "russian propaganda movie" oh is it because we so called "evil cominist country" that we must not shoot films about our own history? lol
then all historical movies of every country can be called "propaganda" XD
Soriori 4 months ago 20
@Soriori No no I definetely dont think that. Oh by the way I didnt write the comment you responded to. It is kind of propaganda because for example in part 2 of this video when like 200 swedish soldiers fire their weapons only 5-10 russians die. And then when the same ammount of russians fire their weapons 2 entire lines of Swedish soldier drop dead. Just an example ^^
hajhej3 3 months ago
@Soriori you know .... it's just that in each Russian and American movie, there is this ONE guy who kills quadropillions of people and anyway, the enemy allways looses a 100 times more soldiers ...... just that I guess.

I like sweeden uniforms! Actually british (red coats )and sweden ones are my favs!
It was great times even solders wore such beautiful clothes. Though I think it was very uncomfortable in battle, especially the hats. thank goodnes our solders didn't wear wigs.

JerkyBeef37 8 months ago
@JerkyBeef37 nah Sweden lost :( but if you read into the war itself.. Sweden got jumped from all sides she was running low on man power but she was woupin that ass. her soldiers and king were very brave if she had time to fight one country at a time theres no doubt in my mind she would of won the Great Northern War. but as its not the case Sweden lost the war. but if you look at casualties and losses Swedes lost very few but inflicted heavy losses on the coaliton forces.
SpainBlood001 8 months ago
This is a pretty accurate portrayal of Poltava. The Swedish lost because they were slowly being killed by disease, raiding Cossacks, and the Russian Winter before Poltava. They were outnumbered, had less supplies, and unlike the Russians, were not wrested. Nonetheless, the Swedes were very valiant, though it came at a terrible cost, and Charles the Twelfth, a great warrior king, suffered his only major defeat at the hands of Peter the Great.
pkart7 8 months ago in playlist Battle scenes
@pkart7 very true but Peter was very lucky.. and like any smart commander attacked at the right moment. but in my mind although the Swedes did loose the war they won in my mind. the Coaliton suffered heavy losses and on the battlefield were destroyed over and over. Sweden just didnt have the Manpower to keep going.

This gives the impression that the odds were stacked against the russians. They certainly weren't. Peter cleverly out-manuevered Charles into a place where he would have numerical superiority.

@elgostine actually it were the canadies who burned the white house , guy who did it is buried in Halifax , not far from where i live .
Anyways im just trolling , since you havent realized as yet . Look all at all those angry russians and swedes .
sewagedweller 1 year ago
>Look all at all those angry russians and swedes.
Nah, there angry sweds only. Stil can't "forgive" their lost. Though 300 years is more than enough. And russians... russians has no reasone to be angry, because: 1) we won (;-P to sweds, hehe); 2) look at the political map
and you'll understand my point.
Nitrorus 1 year ago
>screw that, the brits fielded the most famous,
Famous, may be. But because PR, not because their strength. In fact UK never had strong land forces that could crush continental empires. The only goal, where they could (even in modern day) have success, -- papuas countries, small and almost defenseless in comparison with empires.
Nitrorus 1 year ago
@Nitrorus im more referring to the strength of their inffantry during the napoleonic wars, specially the peninsular campaign. though, true, their navies were arguably their greatest asset.
elgostine 1 year ago
>specially the peninsular campaign.

Dudezaawr 1 year ago

Sneezen 1 year ago
@Sneezen He was lying on a stretcher carried by a number of horses but it was destroyed during the battle and his soldiers helped him get on his horse.

Peter the Great charging into battle was no doubt very brave and very foolish. If he had been killed, the russians would have disintegrated and Karl XII would have his victory. But Peter was lucky, he had been shot three times during the battle but survived.

Then after it when Karl was heading for Moscow the ruskies made pussy tactic starving the swedish army..
