  • Now this is random... Also, interesting that Paul is singing lead rather than Dennis... Not that there's anything wrong with that, just not what I'd expect.

  • Not even the voice of Bing Crosby could replace the voice of David Ruffin.

  • Paul Williams R.I.P. Should have been lead singer!

  • ROTFLOL! Paul you did great stepping in for my man David! !!!

  • ONE THING WAS MISSING MR. VOICE HIMSELF DAVID!!!

  • Bing Crosby was and always will be the man!

  • a.) This is one of the most amazing things I've ever watched...

b.) I feel so dumb asking this, but...where's David? Is this after he left? If so...who's the fifth person? (I see Paul, Otis, Melvin, and Eddie, but who's the other guy at this point in history? lol)

  • @11polkadot1

Don't feel bad, the only dumb question is the one that isn't asked. Yes, this performance is after David left the group. The other guy is the one and only Dennis Edwards who came in for David

  • @BruhMan09 Ah, okay... thanks!(:

  • @11polkadot1 Dennis Edwards. Formally of the group called the Contours (do you love me now that I can dance)

He sang lead on some of the Temps songs: I.E. Pappa was a rolling stone, Cloud nine, etc.

  • Crosby was cool. Always open to the new music. Said of Elvis: "that boy's really got something". Said of The Beatles: "Some marvelous songs, lots of talent". Heard David Bowie, ("compelling performer") booked him on his last TV special (1977) and sang with him. Sinatra, Como, others put down the new sounds.....Bing embraced them. Gotta give him his due. He was a pretty hip dude.

  • Bing couldn't keep up. LOL

  • wow paul was really drunk lol. i love him

  • this is so cutee!!

  • Crosby was cold with that last bassline tho!

  • R.I.P to David Ruffin Eddie Kendricks Paul Williams and Melvin Franklin i pay major RESPECT to them and also Otis Williams these guys are the best these guys changed my life they have songs that just make me realize stuff and I couldn't be more thankful but the person I thank the most is God because he is every reason they are ledgends every prayer payed off ALL I need to say is RESPECT!!!!!! -3 -3 -3 -3 -3 Temptations FOREVER!!! :)

  • Things have a way of working out with different results. Blacks were not in the main stream as they are today,,and everyone have to agree to that. I was brought up liking all the great actors and singers from those days.. Bing, Astair, Hope , Kelly ,Frank just name a few and a host of Black singers That was all there was to watch in 50s St Louis and all America.

  • Bing Crosby+ the Temptaions= Perfection In Performance. I LOVE MOTOWN!

  • Bing could sing with anyone. - That is what made him a great talent. BTW - The Temptations arn't so bad either ! :)

  • This was the period in which motown set out to make the TEMP the most popular group in the world so act like this made visit to all the varity shows. Bing time was the fourties he could sing but he was at the end.

  • dam david must have already been fired

  • Aww you dudes need to realize that this was cool for its time. Bing Crosby gets my respect b/c he was a white cat singing w/ major black talent - Louis Armstrong hello?

Remember that this country wasn't always cool with black and white on the same stage. Bing had his own vibe, but he was def a musician. Notice that he doesn't try to take over the song like most of the modern vocalists would try to do - he gives MAD respect to the Temptations musically, even though he himself was cool.

  • @holygroove2 Awesome points you make! Very true.

  • @holygroove2 Yeh, i see it like that too. Today you got all this diva stuff going on and i don't know what the guys are called : Those days the entertainers had the greatest respect for each others talent. I was looking at the Dean Martin roast shows the other day, and they are still funny, but without all the vulger stuff. I was a child, and would sit there and watch with my parents on sunday evening and i was never told to get out the room or cover your ears. i'm just saying

  • Aww you dudes need to realize that this was cool for its time. Bing Crosby gets my respect b/c he was a white cat singing w/ major black talent - Louis Armstrong hello?

Remember that this country wasn't always cool with black and white on the same stage. He wasn't the best stylist/ singer, but notice that he lets them do most of the singing!

  • that was so sad!

  • love both paul's and bing's voices they sound great together

  • @sexibeast965 youus fo real...dat white BOY singing with temps sucks....just keepin it real

  • Someone should have pulled the old honky offstage with a hook!

  • @junkboxxxxxx Ouch! even a honky agrees with you on that one.

  • Bing should of recorded his own version of this song. He messed this one up though.

  • I've seen duets before with Crosby and others that I adored, but this one plain sucks!

There's a genre dissonance there that makes it horrible.

  • love it...bing doing his thing ;p

  • WOW! I never heard Paul sing "My Girl " ! It would have been just as much a hit if Paul had sung lead on the original. Awesome !

  • Awww paul singing this I love this!..great!

  • I'm thinking about suing the Bing Crosby estate for DESTROYING this classic.

  • All I can do is sit here with my jaw on the floor in awe. For two minutes and fourteen seconds, the only thing I could do was look at this image of a golden past and ask myself: What happened to music in this country?

  • Bing looked a bit stiff here.

  • I love you Bing... but ... really... you ruined this song....

  • that paul can hold his own even without david

  • Merry Christmas ! Is it still premature? But this dance now seems to be popular again.

  • Paul had that great aching voice.

  • Bing would have done better to stay with my xmas---lol

  • Bing was reminding me of the scene in The Five Heartbeats where the White group came out to sing one of the Five Heartbeats songs..LOL!!

I wonder what's the next rare video i'm going to see on You Tube??

Perry Como & Sly & The Family Stone doing Sing A Simple Song..LOL!!

  • What's up with Bing "singing" as if he were William Shatner. He ruined it. That makes me sad.

  • @airdr Be glad he didn't record it with them.

  • Paul was an awesome singer. I never heard him do My Girl before. Also, there is no reason to compete with David. They were both extraordinary singers.

  • i hate to say this bing just mess the whole thang up to me paul was great as always

  • @JCE1972 I Iike Bing Crosby, for what he was best at

  • Cantada por qualquer um dos Temptations, ela será sempre maravilhosa...sung by any of the Temptations, will always be wonderful...Great Paul Williams!!

  • Paul could sing anything..he was just fantastic...can't say enough about him..there will never be another..just my opinion lol

  • @TheSharongreen I totally agree. He had a wonderful voice and his son Paul Jr sounds just like him.

  • Wow... this was surreal... and oddly, right.

  • wow Paul could have done this instead of David

  • @MotownMaster naw come on now

  • @a1992aron David was great, but Paul is my favorite

  • @a1992aron but me nd you both no nobody can sing this song as good as David you the motown master come on now

  • @MotownMaster Yeah, that's a bit much. Paul did good, but paled in comparison to what David did on the song. I acknowledge that Bing's interjection might have thrown him off of what he really would have done. We'll never know for sure.

Wonder when exactly this was. It must have been before "Just My Imagination" but after "Cloud Nine".

  • Bing trying to be hip, lol

  • @jody808 - Bing invented "hip".

  • Paul sang alot of the lead vocals before david joined the Temps. Paul and Eddie used to split leads like David and Eddie split the leads.

  • Good God, what was that insanely low note Bing just casually pushed out at the end?!

  • I saw this perfornance at the Hollywood Palace. My apartment was just a couple blocks away. it was great to see the Temps in person again especially Paul who was the greatest. My love always......

  • TRUE GEM OF A VID!

  • wow paul did a great job filling for david!!!

  • paul was the first real lead singer for the temps.

  • @ranmae57 Actually Richard Street recorded lead with Otis and the Distants before Paul and Eddie joined. Awesome voice!

One thing Otis could do was recognize great voice talent, from David, Eddie, Paul, Dennis, Ali Ollie, Richard, Damon, Ron, Harry...Ray Davis.

  • i like all the tempts but paul and eddie are my favorites

  • Paul did an excellent job !

  • What a treat! Bing Crosby, like Dean Martin, could sing with anyone on his radio and television programs. And The Temptations! Right up there with The Mills Brothers as one of the greatest male vocal groups of all time!

  • Paul did a very good job in singing David's part. He sang it like he has always sang the lead part. Man, they are missed soo much, but at least their legacy will never die.

  • Paul made delivering those superb vocals look effortless. And I have to say, I kind of like Bing Crosby. I read that he was rough on his kids, but as far as the industry goes, he seemed way more genuine towards Black artists than say Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin... they never ever thought Sammy Davis, Jr. was on their level. Anyway, Bing is ok in my book.

  • @sweetmocha008 Not on their level??? Please! I thought Frank and Sammy were so close.

  • Bing has a nice voice

  • Is this the same stage where the Tempts performed ''The best things in life are free'' and ''I wish it would rain'' a few years earlier?

  • yeah they did that a year before this

  • bing has a soulful voice

  • Temps footwork is classic.

  • I liked this video... My thanks to whomever posted this video... Bing had a knack for getting popular acts of the generation to perform with him and they meshed together brilliantly, i.e. Bing and David Bowie's "Little Drummer Boy/Peace on Earth." Paul executed Ruffin's part with utmost perfection... Bing just followed suit. A wonderful performance!

  • Wow, this is a classic. Ole Bing was hangin in there!!.

  • Wow, talk about a generation gap. Bing's 50's playful back and forth style doesn't really match the serious nature and passion of a soul song being sung. I LOVE the suits though!

  • I would hardly call Bing's style 50s, and most certainly not playful back and forth. He, for the large part, invented moderning singing with a microphone and emoting lyrics in a personal style. The strength, stability and warmth conveyed in his voice meant a great deal to a great many people during both the Great Depression and World War II. I agree that his voices colour and tone doesn't lend itself naturally to a soul song though.

  • PAUL=PERFECTION

  • A Disaster? NO...More like 50 years and 2 golden generations of superstars performing (real) classic music together... See if you'll ever see that happen again in our lifetime!!!

  • OMG ITS PAUL IN RED

muchluv4paul...IN RED HE IS SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSOOOOOOOOOOOO SUPER SEXY

  • You are soooo right , he looks so good in this clip all I can say is WOW !!

  • Wow! Great!

  • your comment is a disaster

  • OH FUCK YES.

  • Comment removed

  • bing is simply the master of music

  • if Bing is the master, then Motown is the Emperor of the master

  • something or should I say someone is out of place here: kind of messing stuff up . I guess y'all get my drift. classic yah right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Paul, when dancing with the temps looks short, although I know all the temps were 6ft. +. but next to Bing he looks really tall and extremely handsome. They all do.

  • I too believe Paul was the greatest Temp. He could have sung this like David or even better but it is Davids song and it would not have been right for him to sing it "better" just as it would not be right for another Temp to sing one of Paul's songs like Paul or better. The idea is to carry the tune but not make it your own. Paul had the best voice and could range from tenor to bass. LOVE ME SOME PAUL...THE GREATEST..TEMPTATIONS FOREVER

  • who needs bing,lol!

  • a true treat indeed...def miss david but nice hearig paul do this....wish he had more leads than he did with them! temps 4ever!!!

  • Actually David Ruffin was the lead singer on this song. In fact, it was the first one in which that was the case.

  • Of course this is not Ruffin here, but he was the one who originally did it.

  • The first song he sang lead on was Who's Loving You or You'll Lose A Precious Love

  • While Ruffin sang lead on, and did a studio recording of You'll Lose a Precious Love, it wasn't released until after My Girl. So I guess it comes down to semantics. :)

  • I guess so

  • OMG..This is such a treat. I didn't know Paul sand this song. I love it. Thank you, thank you, thank you, for posting this video.

  • what year is this from? i love it!

  • Very HOT I love Paul and I love the sound of his voice and I shock that the let him sang My Girl I thought a never did because Dennis came and took over lead for all of the songs and I believe that is where Paul problems really started or got worst when he could not sang lead doing what he loved.

  • Well actually they were all singing lead, when Dennis joined there was no lead singer, everybody had a lead on a song including Otis. When Dennis joined,Paul had a shared lead on every hit except I'm Gonna Make You Love Me which featured Eddie,Diana and a spoken segment from Otis

  • wow!sing it bing and paul!

  • Go Bing.

  • Fantastic video!

  • Great job on MY GIRL by Paul Williams, Excellent.

  • Wow! Pretty cool to hear Paul singing lead on 'My Girl'.... love it!!!

  • BIng sung in 1946 with Lionel Hampton on "On the Sunny Side of the Street," where there was all kinds of "cross-talk." Also, he sung with Louis Jordan, on 2 songs about the same time, and "cross-talk" was very much the thing, especially with black artists of that time. Bing showed no disrespect in this, as he'd invited on radio/LP's/TV--Ella, Satchmo, The Mills Brothers, etc. & featured tons of black artists-he loved their music, instrumentals--so, please don't anyone take it as disrespectful.

  • those suits are tight. They make the guys look even taller than they already are.

  • Come on now, who honestly thought that Bing Crosby and the Temptations were a good idea?

  • Sing it Paul! I cud do without Bing talking through the song tho lol

and what did he say the intro sound like?

  • godzilla

  • i dont get it but ok lol

  • He said Paul sounded like Godzilla

  • Actually Paul had not started singing when Bing made that comment. Bing was referring to the Tempts background singing. He said that it sounded like Dardanella. He was talking about the background melody not Paul.

  • oh okay,what is Dardanella

  • Dardanella is a song in the 50's (?) performed by many artists, including Bing. Somehow though, I'm unable to see/hear any resemblance to My Girl.

  • For those too young to know or remember, Bing mentioned the intro sounded like "Dardanella", a Dixieland song he song on an album, featuring duets with Louis Armstrong. Bing's first love was Dixieland, the New Orleans Jazz sound, etc. I know a bit about Bing, and this was from the Kraft Music Hall that he hosted when he was about 60+. Bing was dueting with the Temptations, and the "talking over the melody" originated with Louis Armstrong, chiefly. Bing complimented a great song by the group.

  • The Tempts were all about putting out good music. Paul and David were great friends. Smokey understood what sound he wanted for this song. He never stopped believing in Paul. Once this song took off, a lot of the leads shifted to David, then Eddie, down to Paul. They were ALL great singers! Timing in life is everything. When this song charted, they stuck with this formula. Its no doubt in my mind that the leads could have been handled different. But who could argue with results?!

  • True, Eddie still dominated the albums singing most of the songs on their first three albums. When Norman took over,Smokey was still writing for Paul, but 3 of those songs werent released, they sound pretty good,I uploaded them. "I couldn Think of a Thing at ALL" "Forever in my Heart" " I Now See You Clear Through My Tears". All written by Smokey & the miralces for Paul, they just werent released at the time

  • Paul was the soul of the Temptations, he proved it on this song

  • Paul was so smooth! I love his swagger! I bet the ladies love him back in the day. His voice take him on a whole different level. I can listen to him talk or sing all day.

  • The throaty voice of David is by far the best but Paul takes no back seat on this performance. Take a bow Mr. Paul Williams.........ladies and gentlemen. Goodnite

  • Paul OWNED this song, and Bing Crosby there was simply...LOUSY! The Tempts rocked!...while Bing just sucked incoherently!

  • I love Bing and have everything he ever did.... But this was not his finest moment.

  • actually der bingle sounds preety good in the background parts.

  • The person that I heard sing My Girl as good was Otis Williams

  • do you have it?

  • yeah I got it,he just sang a verse,it sounded pretty good.

  • is it on your page

  • no, not yet,its on my computer

  • Thanx for posting this! I always read that Dennis refused to sing "My Girl" cause he felt it was David's song. It's very interesting to see Paul and later Richard Street cover this one. Paul held it down!!!!

  • Dennis didnt refuse to sing,he said he didnt like singing it because he felt it was David's song. But Dennis did sing it on national tv on that show entitled TCB and on one of their albums with the supremes called My Girl/My Guy

  • This version is the best I've heard after David's.Paul is right there with Ruffin

  • I think I might of.........Yeah, I just threw-up in my mouth. Thanks Bing !

  • BING STOP STOP STOP

  • Huh?

  • Paul was aite his voice wasnt as good as David Ruffinshowever,... David had da best voice in the group..

  • Tbh My girl was always D.Ruffins song But Paul had a unique sound of his own ,

But the ruffin could not sing "Don't look back like Paul" The thing that made the tempts the greatest was they were all exeptional talents that complimented each other , the various voice ranges really made the harmonies the only person Ive ever heard sing my girl as good as david Ruffin was Otis Redding The one that could have made the best solo artist was Melvin franklin the best bass singer ive ever heard....

  • paul was aite? you talking crazy. David was the man but paul was tight. You saying you got it on paul? i'll put money on that

  • They were all great.I think Eddie was the best. This live version is just as good as David's live versions

  • OMG!!!!! I have never seen this before Paul did an excellent job on this song !!! love it thanks for the post

  • Paul wus aite its David Ruffin who had da best voice in the band however

  • Every temp was best at the Song they sang, and of course this was David's Song, David could not Sing Dont look Back, oh mother of mine, Want love i can see, For once in my life Like paul could...no one could...

  • Your right about that only Paul. He sang with so much feeling, David & Eddie were GREAT, but Paul was by far my favorite

  • Paul sounds great on this song. To those who think that Paul's voice was cracking or that he was singing out of range, I have to say that you're wrong. With the exception of the Oooo, which he sung falsetto, he sang the entire song in his natural voice. Although a natural baritone, he was quite capable of singing tenor as he did on many Tempts recordings. Like paul, I am a natural baritone, but I can sing tenor with no problems. Not tooting my horn, just stating it can be done.

  • Bing was cool. Unlike Sinatra, he never put down rock and R & B musicians.

  • I didnt know Sinatra put down R&B musicians

  • Sinatra never liked rock and rollers and R & B shouters throughout most of his life. Right up through the 1980s, when he was on Larry King, he dismissed rock and roll as "a bunch of noise". When Sammy Davis did a soul song in his part of his act, Sinatra would tease "what are you yellin' for?". However, right at the end of his life at the Grammy tribute, after he was introduced respectfully by Bono, an emotional Sinatra said "that was the best introduction that I ever had". All seemed OK.

  • Paul Williams is not THAT versatile dude.... as much as I hate to admit it, his voice was just like any other african american guy with a baritone voice, but Paul's was just stronger. And that's Levi Stubbs...not Paul Williams, not the same style, the same person. David Ruffin on the other hand, has an EXTREMELY versatile and unique voice, and that's the reason his records won over Paul Williams' records 95% of the time. and this is coming from a huge Paul Williams fan, but it's just the truth.

  • You made a comment about singing out of your range, and I pointed out that Levi Stubbs did it.The point is that you can be a baritone and have tenor range. His records never won over Paul's records. So what you're saying makes no sense. You dont sound like a huge Paul fan

  • Paul could've sang any of those songs that David Ruffin sang.Paul's voice doesnt break up here,I dont know what you're hearing, but Paul does a great job on this song. Otis sang a few verses from My Girl,he could've sang that song. Eddie Kendricks could've sang Since I Lost My Baby. This was a group comprised of 5 lead singers. Only reason Paul didnt get more leads on singles is because Norman took over, had Smokey stayed their producer more songs by Paul would've been released

  • Paul is that versatile. What does his race have to do with anything?Paul had tenor range too. Smokey was still writing songs for Paul. You dont know about Paul Williams, thats what it sounds like. Listen to, I Now See You Clear Through My Tears,Forever In My Heart,Hey Girl,or I Feel Like Giving Up which I posted, yuo cant listen to that song and tell me that he couldnt have sung I Could Never Love Another After Loving You or I Wish It Would Rain

  • He also did a Good Job in "How can i forget you","Dont look Back LIVE" and Of course "For Once in my life"

  • Oh yeah definitely

  • But it dont even matter, because when Dennis joined, they all took turns,so every one's voice was being heard on every hit. They shared leads, even on cover songs,Let It Be,You've Made Me So Very Happy, the complete version of September In The Rain, too bad that version aint on youtube, you really hear Paul use his baritone on that one when they're sitting on that tree branch. Paul could've sang Since I Lost My Baby, with the Tempts backing him and the funk brothers doing their thing,it still wouldv hit

  • it wasnt David's record vs Paul's record, thats not how it went down at motown.when norman took over he decided to focus mainly on david as the primary lead singer

  • with on Paul on lead,I still think this song hits #1 r&b and #1 pop

  • You obviously haven't heard Paul sing "Don't look back" live. He can definately hit some notes that may be out of his range. He is very versatile and the women screaming on the recording tells me he must have been laying it on them. I think all the temps could "sang" and any acapella or live version of their song proves it. I agree soul is powerful and it makes you reach for the impossible note.

  • Soul singing is about Pleading! and Power! and makes you feel it. It's NOT singing out of your voice range, like singing a tenor range song while you're a baritone.... and yes, Paul is a baritone, don't even try it with the tenor joke.

  • Levi Stubbs was a baritone with tenor range so whats your point. Paul sings this well

  • Who said Paul was a tenor?? he's a 100% baritone, while he could not hit high notes that much, he had the Most soulful/most powerful voice of the group...He could Preach and Plead, so he could've sang David and Dennis's Songs....

    Isn't Dennis Edwards a baritone as well??o.0

  • Well he was co-lead along with Eddie and Dennis on those psychedelic type songs, but I here what you're saying

  • Paul isnt singing out of his range on this song

  • This is my favorite song and I love Paul's versions of it but my man David is still the only one who can sing it for me. His songs are his alone as well as Paul' s and any other lead singer.

  • But i think Paul could've sang all the songs david ruffin sang, Imagine paul singins Beauty is only skin deep, Losing you, Aint to proud to beg, my baby, Since i lost my baby,

The only main difference between them, is that David hit Higher vocals more often, but paul Had that Voice variation which he could Plead and Preach.

To me Paul Has the most versatile Voice of the Group, And the best dancer

  • I agree,thats the same way I feel

  • I've heard Paul sing this song and Otis and of course I've heard David sing it,they all sound great, what a group

  • Wow what a rare performance! I always knew Paul was an awsome awsome singer but this is just exceptional! Paul in my opinion was so underrated it was crazy. Thank you for posting this! Im a huge temptation fan and to see this totally made my day.

  • What a treat!! Paul singing lead on My Girl, nice job Paul.

  • Although Paul does a good job in covering David's leads, in my opinion Ali was the probably the best to do David's songs...listening to him do I Wish It Would Rain and My Girl on the Whoopi Show is simply awesome.
