  • I listen and enjoy Rush, Coldplay, AC/DC, Eagles, Nanci Griffith and Neil Diamond amongst others. Only Sumi Jo touches my soul.

  • ouf, gives em the goose bumps. I have been dissapointed so many times by signers not getting this aria right, this one made me smile :) fabulous voice quality...

  • Sumi was informed that her father passed away before she went up the stage. Her mother told her that it was her father's wish that she would stand up on the stage until the end. At the end of the performace, Sumi sang this song for her father.

No wonder it was so emotional and perfect :'(

  • I agree. But if you want to make a comparison....try Kiri Te Kanawa. Forget Brightman and Jenkins.

  • best performance for a legenedary tune, all emitators/cover singers, stop trying, she just owned you...

  • She is absolutely amazing.

  • I am a newcomer to opera who got here after falling in love with Jackie Evancho on America's Got Talent. It's clear that Jackie can get better and better over the next 40 years, but even after listening to the best (Sumi Jo here, Renee Fleming, Leontyn Price, Maria Callas) I believe Jackie will be considered their equal if she isn't overwhelmed by pop culture first.

  • @sharvester ...except...Jackie is going to absolutely destroy her voice if her trainers keep giving her opera at that age. This style of singing will mutilate her vocal cords while she's a child. Students of opera don't even begin until their early twenties in some cultures; in the States, it's more popular to begin around 17. Female voices don't even *begin* to mature until their mid-twenties. It breaks my heart to see teachers push ingenue students while their cords are still vulnerable.

  • @sharvester Jackie Evancho is adorable and sings beautifully, but she will NEVER equal DaVina Callas................. take that to the bank.

  • In 2007, The BBC, declared Maria Callas, " The Greatest Soprano Of All Time ".

  • @hammer55292

D: NU! she had great emotion but her singing was sooo sooo ....

  • @AerithOnBroadway Are your credentials greater than the panel of the BBC? Where is your Doctorate in Music from? How many years training/experience do you have in professional opera? None? I didn't think so. Be quiet, and go back to your room.

  • @hammer55292

Wow your immaturity amazes me. I'm just saying shes overrated. There are many others who are just as great if not better. Plus its the BBC nothing but limeys. Also its pretty obvious your a troll of the internet with no life. Instead of trolling others intellectual opinions and conversation go get screwed.

  • @AerithOnBroadway At La Scala they said Callas was not human......that's top of the World Class Opera.

Joan Sutherland said she would not sing one particular aria after hearing Callas live, because " Callas was perfect ". Mexico City went insane when Callas performed there. Palais Garnier ( Paris ) was opened JUST FOR CALLAS!! So stoopid-head Aretha, not just the BBC revered Callas, the entire world did, you nincompoop. Now, go to your room and be quiet, you bad child!!

  • awesome!

  • She is... perfect

  • Sumi Jo is a fantastic singer and musician. See the video when she visits Alfredo Kraus in Spain and plays piano briefly.

  • Senti cara Sumi, non sei la Tebaldi, canta le tue arie di coloratura dove sei perfetta e lascia stare le altre!!!

  • ... wonderful

  • @mumoCMhq I'm disgusted at your perusing Sumi Jo videos perpetrating a fraud by making yourself out to be an erudite connoisseur of opera. You are nothing of the sort. What you are is a dilettante who's on the outside looking in. You are the sort who goes to the French restaurant and can't pronounce the sauces.

  • @mumoCMhq Herbert Von Karajan has been deceased since 1989 you blithering idiot! The greatest sopranos of the 20th century were Rosa Ponselle and Maria Callas.

But for the record please cite an article with Herbert Von Karajan says that Sumi Jo is the greatest soprano of the century.

  • @mumoCMhq "Jo is the best soprano of this century." Say's who? Please, cite one credible figure who will substantiate such gibberish. I'll save you the time of conducting a fruitless inquiry because no credible authority on the subject will say that Jo is the greatest soprano of this century because they would soon be out of a job.

It also must be noted that we're only 11 years into the 21st century and very premature to levy such a title on anyone, especially Jo.

  • @mumoCMhq Judging by what's transpiring on this page I'd say you're the troll. Furthermore, your ineptitude to properly evaluate and critique music has already been woefully demonstrated so there's no need for you to continue to offer statements made out of abject stupidity.

  • @mumoCMhq Whatever. I don't really have strong opinions here. I do like Sumi Jo.

  • @mumoCMhq Yes, I lack expertise in telling if someone's technique is perfect of not, what I question is if 1) there may have been other singers with perfect technique too 2) other people may hear flaws that you don't hear. It's the "best ever" issue that I question - do you know if in 600 years of opera history there were singers with perfect technique? BTW -are you a singer or a voice teacher?

  • @mumoCMhq Because some people think that one singer has better technique and someone else think another singer has better technique or as good? While at that - have you listened to Rachelle Gilmore? Do you think her control and technique isn't as good? Sutherland's? Also, if you are talking "best ever", are you 600 years old? How was Farinelli's technique?

  • @mumoCMhq How many past and present singers did you compare? Have you listened to every opera soprano who's ever lived? How about Giuditta Pasta, I think her technique was better, can you disprove it? Look I think she is an excellent singer, but when people say "best ever", it's always an opinion unless one has lived forever and listened to every single soprano who has ever lived. In terms of technique and control, I'd imagine some may disagree. Since I don't know, I'll take your word for it.

  • To the person who stated that she lacks the emoution for Opera listen to Queen of the Night. She is a coloratura so she sounds best singing light floaty music with complex high notes that dance around like a birds song. She is not every type of singer she is only herself. To some of us she is the VERY VERY best since some of us like her style. I find her magical, beautiful. If you like a deeper more dramatic sound then she is not for you. To me, she is unbelievable.

  • @bmaldonado1223

Well said, the "very very best" always and forever!

    Long live Sumi Jo

  • This is a voice . Effortless, great control and with so much feeling .Could listen to her forever.

  • Personally I prefer the Sarah brigtman Version of this song...

  • @Th3pHo3nIx Try with Montserrat Caballé or Maria Callas, you will totally forget Sarah Brightman.

  • Personally I prefer the Sarah brigtman Version of this song...

  • ms charlotte church and ms leontyne and ms maria callas are fantastic u got to hear them rip ms callas

  • Very moving and dynamic. Such control and emotion. One of the better versions of this song I've heard in a while.

  • DAMN THAT'S WHAT I CALL DYNAMICS! such control. wow.

  • hëhe_âñÿÒÑë_wáNÑÃ_chät_wîth_mÈ_î_fÈêl_s0_loÑélÿ_tødAÿ..

  • dude. She's a goddess.

  • She's perfect.

  • She has such beautiful control.A little scooping but mot singers do.I saw Kiri Te Kanawa in Adelaide Australia a couple of weeks ago.She sang this aria at the end of her concert. To be honest she chose very easy arias and basically cruised through the performance. No big notes. Not much sustain.I like her and she has done the hard yards but.Sumi Jo sang this much better here and i will be going to see her if i have the chance. All singers are gifted and different.

  • LA OTRA TIPA NO PUEDE MAS KE TENER FANS IGNORANTES BRUTOS Y AGRESIVOS KE NO TE DAS CUENTA IMBESIL KE SARA JAMAS PODRA CANTAR LA REINA POR EJEPLO TE AS PUESTO A PENSAR EN ESO IDIOTA?? NOOOOOOOO TU Y TU KERIDISMA CANTANTE BASURA SARA BRIGHTONTA

  • does anybody else get the occasional shiver during this song? I know thats my soul

  • Truly Gifted.

    I Cr 13:8a

  • 2,000 years of Confucianism have rendered East Asians incapable of the emotional dexterity need for opera. Her performance is far from exemplary; she lacks pliancy, looks sucked-in, and possess all the grace and nuance of a rock.

  • @QRF11B

Your post hardly warrants a reply but I will waste a couple of minutes on you.

Go back to football hooliganism or what ever sad past time suits your philistine tastes!

If you don’t like Sumi Jo, listen to what you find agreeable. Don’t show off your ignorance in public with unfounded critisism of the greatest female singer ever to grace our ears with music.

  • @rmcinuk I suppose one unwarranted response deserves another. Furthermore, you only expose your ignorance about opera by proclaiming a woman of mediocre talent as "the greatest female singer." And spare me your half-baked and amateur opinions on what constitutes quality music.

  • @QRF11B It's not true that she is "incapable of the emotional dexterity need for opera"! Try to listen to her 'Oh quante volte, oh quante', or 'Ah fors'è lui - Sempre libera', or 'Ardon gli incensi - Spargi d'amaro pianto'! In this performance she sounds really boring, but I think it's because her voice is too light and sweet for this kind of opera, that requieres a bigger and deeper voice, like Tebaldi's, Caballé's, Callas' ecc.

  • @QRF11B

Guess I hit a nerve there then!

Further more, how dare you judge such a huge and vibrant part of the world community on a pathetic piece of evidence as like Confucianism.

Not only don’t you know music you have no idea of humanity either and no I’m not Oriental.

  • @QRF11B Wow I'm finding you everywhere, you are really hated.

  • @jazpyy I've really gotten under your thin skin. Maybe you'd like me to educate you on the finer points of opera as well? Let me know, I'll be in the neighborhood.

  • @rmcinuk Sumi Jo is a fine coloratura soprano, but there are other great coloraturas. Saying "greatest female singer ever" shows you haven't heard too many opera singers. Even among coloratura sopranos there are some who are better, but then it's a matter of taste. But there are other voice types in opera, even among sopranos there are divisions by weight and agility as well, and even in one type a singer could be great in one repertory and not other. Plus, opera has 600 years of history...

  • @jewelmarkess

Music is totally subjective. Over the last 30 odd years I have in fact listened to most of the sopranos past and present who have recorded material.

Now when I revisit works I loved in my 20s and 30s, I find I prefer Sumi Jo's versions. Her voice has a unique quality that I cannot find in other great singers. So from my perspective "greatest " is correct. Please enjoy whom ever your years finds "greatest" as I enjoy Sumi Jo, the greatest opera singer ever!

  • @rmcinuk You have a point.

  • @sopranocontraltomezo Hola troll ;-)

I am so glad this Korean woman sing very beautifully.

  • I am so glad to hear this Korean lady sing very elegantly and beautifully. Yes, real good performance!

  • Giọng Sumi Jo không hợp với bài này lắm ! Hơi khô và thiếu tình cảm ! Nhưng đây là một con người đa năng. Nếu bớt được âm "A" của tiếng Hàn Quốc thì hay biết mấy !

  • sumi jo : coloratura soprano: a female voice with an upper extension of high notes

maria callas : dramatic soprano : the heaviest or most darkly colored of the soprano types.

  • mmmm.. as callas or caballe, no one

  • @bigsley what acc. To u is THE original ?

  • wow! this is bery good!!

  • Her voice is amazing !

  • of course she understands what about she is singing, she speak 6 different languages. Amazing.. =)

  • She looks like she doesn't understand what about she is singing. She has got quite good technique but that' all.

  • @03violetta How does she not look like she understands what the song is about? I'm not sure that this fact is correct, but I was told that her father recently died before this performance so she had a strong emotional connection to it.

  • no, this one is no good, far behind others (I'm asian but still, it's just not good enough)

  • wow, way better than the original

  • This is a real education for me! When I hear Sumi Jo , Montserrat Caballe, Anna Netrebko and Renee Fleming sing this Puccini number I get that they have drilled this song ! There are versions on youtube from Sarah Brightman, Hayley Westenra.... sweet ! Yet, now I know the difference between a professional and a music hall performer.Well done Sumi JO, john from australia

  • the most beautiful babbino caro ive ever heard....this aria was written for her

  • Great singer, but not the best recording. It doesn't do her justice, unfortunately.

  • I hear a little technique but no character nor emotion.

  • @freeqwerqwer LOL, music FAIL to you...you clearly know nothing about what it takes to become a musician let alone differentiate between technical and musical aspects of someone's singing. Maybe you should listen to this one more time, with your ears.

  • 0:16 she makes it look so easy:) when we all know singing opera is anything but easy:)

  • Sorry but not to good to me... :S

  • @idonperg oops didnt want to do that... i dont like it either.. so its a thumbs up..

  • You can try but you cannot improve on this version...she is way over the top, wonderful

  • Too slow..

  • @GreekCallas callas in this aria is horrible ... sumi is angel

  • Grandioso

  • Sumi Jo is great. Brightman? Jenkins? They are not singers, they are moneymakers.

  • Absolutely beautiful! Love every note of it.

  • Bravissima.

  • I dunno, i find that she is amazing in some roles, but this aria is not suited for her.. Maria Callas then Montserrat Caballe and thats it..

  • her voice doesn't have the warmth that caballe does in this aria, but I know nothing about opera, i just listen and that's my outsider opinion

  • she came to singapore this year. i know this version is very thick,, very rich.. the one she performed in singpaore this year, was fantastic, no doubt,, legend.. she was the best. her dress, of course, extremely pretty and gorgeous. those people who say she lakcs in emotion are crazy people

  • I was in her performance with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra some years ago. Her voice and performance did not impress me.

    Anthony Lau

  • Caballe?

She's always sounded like a sick wolf to me

  • I think Kiri sings it best / loyal to the manuscript and the composers intentions.

  • Great singer Sunmi Jo-love her Bell Song, but no one moves me when singing this aria like Caballe does.

  • Just gives you chills, she is stunning!

  • I love Sumi Jo, but I can't say that I like this. It's just no suited for her voice.

  • @fockewul , That's just what i was thinking. Her voice is best suited to roles with a lot of vocal pyrotechnics like the Queen of the night or Olympia. Her voice is technically perfect, but lacks the warmth for something like O mio babbino caro.

  • I prefer Netrebko´s version...

  • Comment removed

  • instead, i *really* do feel emotion here.

  • this is GORGEOUS. i love maria callas but sumi jo sings this aria better.

  • @explosivejohnny i agree, she is much better singing mozart... actualy, the only rolles that fit her are mozart operas

  • it's a shame the sound is not perfect. We can't exactly hear her collutura like this ....

  • i saw live at juilliard beverly sills sing the HELL out of this aria. she has by far interpreted this piece out of context of the opera. as for the most 'dramatic' soprano who has sung it, it was has been ad always will be maria callas. no one sings puccin like her; the 'squillo' and chiauroscura in her voice are on a completely different level; she's in a league of her own--before and since

  • Wonderful! :D

  • By far better than Maria callas.

  • No way, nothing is better then callas.

  • nice, but not like maria callas.. the one...

  • Perfect!

  • Bha dis donc, maria callas doit se retourner dans sa tombe la pauvre .

Ou est passer le bel canto de y a 50 ans du temps de a callas et de la tibaldi ? ...

  • @darylfs

Brightman and Jenkins???? You've got to be kidding me.

  • @tenor220 : Brightman hát quá tệ ! Như một đứa trẻ con lên 3 học hát Opera

  • @tenor220 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!! MY GOSH, I JUST CAN"T STOP LAUGHING!!! Seriously, did someone compare Brightman and Jenkins to Jo? HAHAHAHA... excuse me.

  • darylfs

Sarah Brightman (?) is the "operatic" Britney Spears (super technological "boost") ... she's way out of Anna Netrebko and Sumi Jo's league ... contralto(?) this is a soprano aria ... a contralto is Ewa Podles ... terms clearly above your head ... Sissel is a soprano who sings mezzo but her vocal colour (fach) is clearly soprano but she is better recorded than live or miked (technological boost) ... it's a matter of taste ... all the above are enjoyable but are NOT IN THE SAME LEAGUE!

  • @fierysensual I agree, Sissel sounds like a pop singer live .....

  • @fierysensual I agree. Brightman is shit

  • So, what you're claiming is that, let's say Netrebko or Brightman are beter than Jo? Just because she has a richer, darker tone? I'm not Jo biggest fan, but...

Well, Netrebko has the stiffest voice, unable of the "fine" singing and Brightman isn't EVEN singing opera. She's just a typical NON-operatic soprano with a thin voice.

  • what do you mean that netrebco is perfectly itaklian she is russian..

And sissel and sarah arent opera singers. you should lissen to maria callas, moserrat cabbale, renata tebaldi

  • @darylfs Brightman? Jenkins! I'm laughing so hard something just trickled down my leg I hope it was a tear.

  • If this woman lacks emotion, I'll take a dozen. What a voice, what technique, and yes, what heart. Listen to her "Ave Maria" sometime. One of the greatest sopranos in the world today. I can think of no other who moves me like she does..

  • @jd1906sf ... you said "I can think of no other who moves me like she does.. "

i would say 'Renee Fleming' is the best version of this song i have heard as she really floats her voice flawlessly in parts.

Sumi Jo wise.. the best song i heard her sing 'so far' is 'Vocalise' (from 'The Ninth Gate' (1999) soundtrack) as she's great on that song but on O Mio Babbino Caro she lacks the 'feeling' (i.e. the stuff that moves me) that Renee Fleming gives me. but i think Sumi Jo does great on Vocalise.

  • @jd1906sf yes,she is so emotional and so energetic..what a performance!!!

  • @jd1906sf It is true that there are other Opera singers with more emotion but no one , I mean NO ONE, has better technique than Sumi. And for that reason I would consider her the best.

  • mahal kita

  • canta hermoso

  • Bambino no (like child)

    IT'S BABBINO (DADDY!!!!!)

It's a girl that wants marry with her boyfriend, bur her father refuse.

  • What an amazing gift this lady has. Technically, I don't think there is another one like her... she's lacking emotions compared to other singers, but her voice is so breathtaking that I can easily forgive her.

  • too weird that everybody writes babbino,, even the one who wrote the song?

She is not asking for a permission to marry. She is asking Gianni Schicchi to agree to help Rinuccio's parents to steal the inheritance. Then Rinuccio's parents would agree to the marriage. Instead Gianni Schicchi steals the money for himself so now Lauretta has a dowry and can marry.

  • If you are Italian, you should know that she is singing to her father (dad, babbo, babbino) not to her baby... Now if she were singing to her baby, the words wouldn't have make any sense at all.

  • Babbino... dear father. I'm American. ;)

  • Wow is that so?..... Well just because you are Italian that dose does not make you are an expert in Opera

  • Oh my gosh! Such a beautiful voice! I enjoyed it very so much, one of my favorite opera arias!

  • What a fantastic voice. This young lady is destined to reach the top.

  • It's Babbino caro and NOT Bambino....

So, title of this aria is:

    O MIO BABBINO CARO

Meaning exactly ( my dear little dad )

    Trust me, I AM ITALIAN!!

  • it is bambino. oh, my dear child (baby). I dont know what the hell they're talking about. Bambino is italian. And so is this song.

  • It's Babbino, as Lauretta is trying to cajole her father, Gianni Schicchi in this case. Not only is Babbino in the aria title, the use of bambino also makes no sense in the overall plot.

And about Sumi Jo, she's considered the voice of a generation. I don't know why people keeps bashing these amazing talents on youtube.

  • ahahahahahaha that's so funny!!!

  • that's the thing - she may not be better than caballe or callas - but SERIOUSLY! listen to that technique! i DARE you to perfect that.

  • love this

  • i like the Sumi Jo song 'Vocalize' from The Ninth Gate (1999) film as she sing that song great.

as far as O Mio Babbino Caro... i still prefer Renee Flemming as that's THE best version i heard of this song.

  • Thank you God for this great gift of voice and for the ears to hear!

  • My Good Lord! That's the best version of this song I've ever heard. Do you hear how she just makes the notes linger in the air... Magnificent!!!!!

  • good

  • i think sumi jo's technique is more higher than hayley or sissel... but sissel is better than hayley in this song.

  • Actually, it's babbino meaning father... Stop confusing italian with spanish american

  • actually i'm italian, but i tought it was bambino...

  • it's O, mio babbino caro - Oh, my dear papa...

  • magnificient vivrato

  • maravilloso, divino

  • that was amazing

  • She is great!

  • She's the best living Soprano that I've ever heard.

  • She certainly is great Anastasiary, No doubt about that. Have you heard Hayley Westenra's version of this aria, also very, very good. But for a real treat, listen to the version done by the fabulous Norwegian soprano, Sissel Kyrkjebo, just type in Sissel !!!! You wont be sorry !!! Cheers.

  • Yes but I still think Sumi Jo is the best :D

  • she does have an extremely colorful voice...but this posts audio quality is aweful...it hurts my ears...

  • absolutely AMAZING! wow! she has one of the best dynamics and her crescendo decrescendo are PERFECT! talk about passion and depth! excellent vibrato and her tone color is so clear! well done!

  • straordinaria soprano !!!

  • puoi dirlo forte... Sumi Jo è asssurda!! troppo bella, troppo brava!!
