@macjavelin: er, BS I'm afraid. It is based on a poem about the abandonment of the Hellenistic city of Alexandria in Egypt. See the Wikipedia article on Constantine Cavafy.
The theme of living a moment of passion with a woman who belongs to another, is interwoven in the song with nostalgia for past glories, and is autobiographical for Cohen probably and Cavafy certainly.
I believe the purpose is to heal. What Cohen does is to subtly superimpose the imagery of two different scenarios, a woman leaving for another man and "the other" being simply death or, in more Catholic terms, The Lord (her lord). The effect on the subject is the same. It is the absence of the "god of love" in your life. In the case of terminal illness, as an example, the subject may feel as betrayed by fate as in the case of infidelity. In the case of divorce he may feel like it is the end.
Perfect video to this sound. The song has a strange balance, like it's purpose is to heal you. And it's as much beauty and peace in it as it is in the shape of a woman's body. You gave a beautiful view to this beautiful tune. Thank you
Just Beautiful.

This song is perfect for Cohen. My favorite of the songs he wrote, when he sings them. Good video as well.

I love this. I'm in what I know is going to be a temporary relationship and the song says what I will feel when it ends.

"...exquisite music..."
Images capture the essence of Cohen's words perfectly.
Thank you for sharing.

That one dislike probably belongs to the man that Leonard is singing about ~ the one that needs to drink it in.

the lyrics are based on the Greek poets Cavafy poem, God abandons (or forsakes) Anthony written in 1911

Thirty years ago .... I was in love with Alexandra!
Yet she was unhappy with her name .... used "Alex" and "Sandy". Before settling on something else.
What a beautiful song from a great artist!

Bittersweet but beautiful. Cohen is the consummate poet for our times. The video is a well done compliment to the song.
