This is stupid, you have the distributor in wrong. You're so full of shit. Don't you know there are people out there that actually pay attention to this bull!!
@Mrphatbastard1: Do us a favor, stay off the meth and come back in a few years when you can see straight. I watched this video closely and they did a good job. Shut the fuck up please and stop trolling their videos.
@IROCwarriorAMC88 You goofy prick, it's obvious you know shit about "dizzy" install on a GM engine. It's a tooth off. The top of the "dizzy" should be parallel with the back of the motor and the vacuum advance should point straight ahead. You're frikin' dizzy!!
These engines are so different from each other as to Imports. I normally use a long rod in the spark plug hole and turn the engine until I see the rod go all the way up to set the TDC, sometimes feeling the air from the Cylinder confuses many people.
@RightsAndPrivileges Oh ok, nevermind I just watched an animation so the top of the distributor or the cap, where the spark plug wires hook up to doesn't rotate, there's a plate that rotates underneath the cap.
what happens if u plug the wires in a different order,?? got a car mazda miata with 4 cylinder, 16 valves 4 per cylinder, twin cam 1.8 cc, and putting back the wires from a spark plug exchange i might´ve confused and dit it wrong, then had to drive all the way to the closest garage, on the way there i could here loud noises like the metal hitting against metal, i didn´t speed up and drove way to slown, was so scared i was gonna break my car but had no more option to do on that moment
@cfsierra i mixed the order up once on my truck...it didn't even start...sounds like you didn't get on of the wires all the way on a tower or its plug...or like you didn't get the plug in right (causes a misfire and piston goes all the way up without combustion)....what did it end up being anyway?

OK not sure if my problem is cam related but here goes. Owned a 350 with a bad cam so I paid my neighbor to pull it out and install a new one. He put a cam that had been used for about a week from another engine and put everything back together. Now that I have the car I can start it but it seems to be too advanced for me, I retard the timing and it backfires and dies. When at the original timing I put the car in gear and it barely clears 500 RPM and does not drive, is that cam related or not?
@SkylarkGSX It's a good thing that you find these concepts simple, but if you look around the comments here or look through the discussion forum at our site, you'll find out that the theory and practice behind distributor wiring and ignition timing is confusing to a lot of people.
If you've got the know-how, you can contribute your own ideas and maybe help solve some questions for others by keeping an eye on comments here...
@BoxWrench Yeah sure. One of the things I see more often than not is a persons unwillingness to tune their own set up through trial and error. They just want you to give them the answers and tell them the perfect setup and blah blah blah. I don't mind getting my hands dirty to try something new, like getting under the car and taking the diff apart to see how it works and it's purpose etc. Goes for every part of the car. And seeing what workd and what doesn't. Nothing beats getting it just right!
@BoxWrench my bro and an auto store cashier tried to tell me that the wires have to go in the same place on the cap always...but i BEGGED to differ with them...can I put "1" on, anywhere and wire from there? I'm pretty sure I can...I'm just worried about the rotor being in the wrong place when I go to start after a tune up.....but the rotor should just rotate a bit and catch on....right?
@SkylarkGSX ...so if i'm doing a complete tune up...cap rotor wires and plugs...does the number one tower have to be the same on the new distributor as it was on the old one? either way, does the rotor have to point to the number one tower, when I put the cap on?
@robert30319 We have standard recommended torque specs for a fair amount of V8 engines on our site. Be sure to also click the link if you're using ARP Bolts as they have separate torque specs.
On any of our site pages. you'll see a link for 'Engine Specs' on the left.
@BoxWrench any idea where i can get some for a 2.5l 151 ironduke? i wanna do the rebuild with a comp cam and a 30 over but any idea if it would compare to 4.3 with a cam any idea which is a better way to go when pulling i can pull a 5303 john deere with my little 4cyl s10
@councilman1993 The crank is spinning at double the speed of the camshaft. The rotor and distributor are driven by the camshaft. So, one revolution of the dist. rotor is caused by one revolution of the camshaft and the crank will have spun around twice during the same period of time...
All of that means that the rotor will pass the tower for each cylinders spark event, only during the compression stroke.
how can i get more spark for my yzf 600 motorcycle, im only seein one spark at a time and its not enuff, i have tried everything i could think of i really need help....thankz junior..
My truck stopped running when winter came this year. I took the distributor cap off and cleaned off the little posts inside and it started. However letting the trucks sit there for only 3 days It didnt wanna start again. I just went a bought a new cap and rotor and now the throttlle response is way better than what it was before.
On the distributor seen in this video, there is a coil inside the distributor cap. On other types of ignition systems there is one separate coil where a wire feeds electricity to the center of the distributor cap. Still other designs have an individual coil for each cylinder.
The coil coverts 12 volts from the battery to higher voltages that then travel along the spark plug wire and create a spark when they jump across the spark plug gap itself...
thanks but the battery is only needed for starting the car i thought so if you took the battery out would it not run or would it use the volts from the alternater then?
The battery is needed for the large current draw of the starter motor. An alternator cannot create enough amperage to operate a starter motor.
The alternator does create enough voltage and amperage to create sparks to keep the engine running however. Yes it is true you can start a car and remove the battery, it will keep running off of the alternator.
If you stop the engine, you would need to reconnect a battery to drive the starter motor again....
The orange painting block in the video is a Small-Block Chevy but the procedure described is accurate for any type of engine.
You can check the BoxWrench website (web address is in the logo at upper right) and get all the info described here for your Chevy and many other makes of engines.
The 'Basic Engine Building' DVD also has all of the rest of the rebuild info from removal to start-up...
Do you a video on using a timing on SBC and how do you use a timing that his has a advance degree dail on the back my manual that that came with the timing light
With a timing light that has a dial on the back you can use it like any order basic light if you just set the dial at 'zero'.
If you set the dial on the gun at 10 degrees, you would point the light at the balancer and rotate the distributor until the timing tab or pointer lines up with the balancer as if you were trying to set "zero" TDC timing. With the dial at any number, you just line up the zero marks and you know the timing is set to the number on the dial.
these videos are perfect for students and for a refresher with exp. mech. no one is above this information. i know of some 20+ year mech thats have never rebuilt an engine.

Yes, a 4 cylinder engine can run with almost no apparent problems on 3 cylinders. It depends on what type of ignition timing compensation is built into the ECU or ignition, but you may not even notice if a coil, spark plug or wire is faulty.
We've even seen V8s run on 4 cylinders and V6s run on 4. Not smoothly, but they'll run.
hey id like to know how smooth a v8 engine could handle only 6 spark plugs... will it run as smooth as a normal 4-cyl with 4 spark plugs?.... i guess the procedure of deactivating cylinders would also need to have something clogging the rest of the fuel line.... using some sort of closed end nut? so as to decrease the loss of fuel
