This is where they did the testing for the bouncing bomb in world war II, so the dam plays a big part in history and it is one of the oldest in the world i think and it is big. They built 2 dams too stop sheffield getting flooded and sheffield has 7 hills so good fresh water and good for electricity for the city. The 2 dams are beautifull and the scenery is heart stopping. Snakes pass what a road, used to race my car out there years ago when it was dark, never again. claimed some right lives. :)

@KiriouSs You dont get a true feeling of the size of it from the camera, but from what you can see on the film, the smaller part of the funnel at the bottom could swallow a small - average family car.

No steps down to it, but when the water isnt high enough to fill it, it looks like a giants staircase. search for Ladybower Dam on google earth and you mught get a good idea.

someone did make that, its called a drain, when the lake reaches full capacity (6.8bn gallons) it flows over the top of that to prevent it spilling over the top of the dam or damaging it

the top of the shaft is about 24 metres across, and the water flows down to the river derwent at the other side of the dam. to prevent flooding when the water in the resevoir is high. There is another hole at the other end of the dam. can check it out on google earth for satellite shot.
