  • I like Dave. He doesn't pretend the biggest guitarrist in the world. His abilities are very average, but maybe this is the reason, his talent is not cramped by the rules and the proccess of creation is so spontaneous.

  • what kind of ampppp?

  • @king0stuffz fender

  • What amp does he use here?

  • @patrickrennemomusic fender amp

  • I'm ignorant about tattoos. Why do the ones on his arms seem to change from red to outlines?

  • @jecleveland1 the colour is fading on them

  • zapplin song ? which one?

  • is rope drop D

  • @Undercookedham No, standard tuning

  • gotta have respect for someone who writes what sounds good, instead of relying on what theory tells you to play you play what sounds good, i think a lot of theory buffs forget the concept of sounding good

  • Dave can you do videos like this for your entire music catalog?

  • the chorus guitar part of rope is so foo fighters-ish :D

    it's just a signature sound

  • the chorus gave my goosebumps !

  • THAT defnetly is the coolest semi-acoustic guitar ever!!!!

  • What amp is he Using?

  • that gibson into that blues jr. sounds fucking tits. damn!

  • My favorite person on the earth.

  • Finally someone with the same philosophy about music. Using your ears man!!! thats the best way in my opinion, and if your good enough, u can bypass the rules of composition and make some awesome shit!

  • Finally figured out how to play that "zeppelin" (which Dave calls it) part of Rope ...the right way thanks Dave !!!! :D

  • Dave, even when you dismantle Rope, it still sounds so good - bless you brother ;)

  • Dave Grohl is a beast at the guitar and drums

  • Comment removed

  • doesn't have to be technical. it's all about feeling and melody. cool is cool

  • This was refreshing. I can't read music to save my life, and I find odd chords/notes and play with them. Just makes me appreciate Dave Grohl'e process even more.

  • @joecold1243 same with me

  • this guy is so fucking awesome!

  • If i could play like that, I'd never leave a guitar.

  • Speaking of the Led, the Pretender opening riffs sounds very similar to say...oh...Stairway?

  • Funny. As a drummer, I strum the same way he strums :P

  • can anyone tell me what amp is he using?

  • @godkiller9008 fender re issue

his live amp i think is an AC3O by vox

the vox amp you can get cheaper then the re issue

  • Hi Everyone, you can find the guitar tab from this master class on my blog. The URl is available on my profile. See you

  • 4:50 well that explains why some Foo songs have some real funky chords lol.

  • he writes like a drummer. his foo fighters band is the opposite of nirvana. each to their own of course.

  • It's cool. I've always thought Dave's guitar riffs were inspired by the fact that he was a drummer first. They always have such a unique rhythmic quality and I always attributed that to his being a drummer. And that seems to be the case!

  • @BrokenWingman Actually, he was a guitarist first. Then later in his teens he switched to drums.

  • I think when he doesn't know music he's been a tad sarcastic. It's his way of saying he's not technical or classical about his music knowledge. He's not too concerned about the rules of composition, if it sounds good it's worth checking out. I also get that his song playing is very strongly influenced by his drumming style; which more often than not is forming a drumline that mimics parts of the guitar section.

  • 7:06 - Gilbert Grape move

  • after this, millions of teens will start covering these songs with their bands..

  • while I believe that Dave is honest in all of the interviews I've seen, at times there is a lot of humor used which just leads me to believe he's trying to keep his serious/intimate side out of the conversation. but when he begins saying "I don't know anything about music...", it's such an open and honest side of him that I haven't seen much of. he talks about 'sensitive' subjects (like Kurt and Nirvana), but it's usually followed by something funny. this interview was very refreshing.

  • as much as i love dave grohl to death, people need to stop worshiping him like he's the greatest singer/guitarist/drummer of all time. great drummer, one of my favorites in modern times, but he isn't the almighty songwriter that everyone's been obsessing about since wasting light came out.

  • @rockfreak611 Agreed

  • @rockfreak611 He's not of ALL time. He's just one of the best modern musicians today.

  • @Kingddd333 really? Nahh

  • GENIO!!!!!!

    SOS UN GROSSSOOOOO!!!!

  • And it's that easy, kids. Pfff! What really burns my wig is that they write a lot of these tunes DURING the recording sessions, play them down a few times, and then put it to tape (literally, 2" tape).

  • I know a tiny bit of music theory, but I don't plan on using it.

  • @Kingddd333 You should. You should plan on learning more, too.

  • @Kingddd333 don't limit your ability or potential for the sake of "I never took lessons, I cant read/write music, I don't know anything about it" type of bragging rights. Its not worth it.

  • @Stephenplaysmusic Not for brag reasons. I do take lessons, not taking lessons impairs actually learning how to play. I am still learning music theory, I just don't like using it like mad in song writing, I just like to put in what plays in my head, and what sounds good.

  • @Kingddd333 May limit learning ability, but i'm pretty sure guitarists like Billy Corgan and Dave Grohl who have had huge success with the Smashing Pumpkins and The Foo Fighters aren't struggling. Learning yourself actually expands your thinking a bit more as you don't focus on specific scales etc. As well as this it is very satisfying when you actually learn things on your own, it takes longer but you work your own way of doing things which may or may not sound good.

  • pure genius

  • thats crazy!

  • It seems as though every guitar player I like cannot read music and knows very little about music theory, at least for the earlier parts of their career, which, often times, is my favorite part of their career

  • oh holy mother of god, the crunch coming from that fender amp

  • I fucking love foo fighters ♥.♥

  • Dave Grohl is probably our generations greatest songwriter.

  • @raylgonzo Hahahaha

  • fresh poooots!

  • Comment removed

  • @MyNameBackwards95 FRESH POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOTS

  • This helps a lot for rope... every damn tab version of this is different, I've been wondering which is right

  • Presence!

  • Dave Grohl is God.

  • @IFightFoo 4:42 "I don't know anything about music." Liar.

  • @IFightFoo He's not a liar, why say such a thing. I have been playing guitar since 1981 and I cannot read music. Yes I know what a stave is and what 4/4 timing is and I also know what a dotted eight note is and a major scale etc as does Dave grohl. You just pick up this stuff as you go along, what Dave is saying is he will play a chord and will not know what chord it is, I am sure he can work it out and tell you but it is above his head as it is mine or possibly does not interest him

  • @TalkToTheBody I'm saying he's lying about not knowing anything about music. He knows song structure better than anyone out there.

  • @IFightFoo I think what Dave was saying was that he finds a chord that sounds cool (as he demonstrated in the song Rope) and he uses it, but he is telling the truth in the fact that he does not know what chord it is. Sure he will be able to work it out as I could but even with the ability to work it out he (like myself) would not call ourselves music readers per se. He plays and discovers as he goes along, which in my opinion is the best way to go

  • "The chorus is basic".......The chorus is fucking awesome!

  • "moving it around the neck you get this kinda weirdness to the note..."

  • He can't read music .... Eddie Van Halen said the same thing many many years ago..I'm not saying learning music theory is a bad thing but I do believe having no boundaries frees up your originality and promotes innovation and this is in my opinion why Dave Grohl's work is attractive as you have no idea what is around the corner.... in other words it's far less predictable.

  • @TalkToTheBody You, sir/ madame, make a very good point.Almost makes me wish i hadn't made it one of my goals to learn as much about musical theory as i could...

  • @shako9876 thanks for that, nice touch. Another thing I have noticed is Dave Grohl rarely plays solos, no idea why but if he shares my opinion it's because many solos are self-indulgent periods of boredom. The Edge also rarely plays solos, I think these two guitarists instinctively know if a solo is needs and do not resort to the "so where can we fit this solo in" ritual as used by most bands and guitarists. I just find the Foo Fighters a breath of fresh air.

  • @TalkToTheBody Sorry for butting in on your discussion but I was interested in what you were saying. I think players like Dave Grohl, The Edge or Keith Richards don't play many solos because, yes, soloing can easily slip into self-indulgent tedium but more importantly, they regard themselves are players within a unit, supporting the song, rather than virtuosos who occassionally step outside of the song for their own glory. The Edge has said as much and Richards is clearly the Riff Master!

  • says he cant read or write music... big relief for us who cant do the same lol

  • 4:41 , a huge suprise to me!

  • Does anybody know how to play the "Zeppelin riff" her refers to at 6:26?

  • Fucking smexy ass guitar. Love Gibsons. Grohl is God.

  • 1:36 this sounds like its gunna be very bad.....their producer left them alone...in the studio....

  • thanks alot this vidoe taught me how to play rope ftw :D

  • please show us the settings on that blues jr, i cant get mine to sound nearly that good

  • saw them in charlotte last month. they were amazing

  • God I wish I had equipment like that at my disposal.

  • The dirty things ill do for that guitar!!!!! Man oh Man..And im a guy !!!

  • 2:06 what chord is he playing?

  • 2:50 rif inspired by Paint It Black

  • It's weird seeing Dave playing somewhat complex parts (at least to me) when he usually does really really basic rhythm stuff during concerts.

  • Why does he make it look so fucking easy??

  • @xXHidayaXx because it is man.

  • @xXHidayaXx it is fucking easy

  • @xXHidayaXx Hes been playin since he was like 11 haha

  • Comment removed

  • @xXHidayaXx Playing this is really easy, but creating it is freaking hard!

  • @xXHidayaXx

    Its in his blood

  • @xXHidayaXx Why? ¬¬

    Because it is fucking easy!

  • @xXHidayaXx because thats what natural great musicians do

  • @xXHidayaXx because that is easy

  • Dave is proof you don't need to be a godly player, write amazing songs with complicated notes or know how to read/write music perfect...just have fun and play

  • @BulletFrenzy543 I Tottaly Agree man.

I feel the same about Kurt Cobain in that regard. Not a Super Amazing Guitar Player but an Amazing Song Writer :)

  • @hoiaxel Cobain always played kind of sloppy to get that grunge sound, but i saw a show on tv talking about his early life, he played guitar from his very early teens up until his death, so id assume he was much more capable with the instrument than most people think.

  • Why didn't I pick up a guitar instead of a game controller as a kid! Damn it!!

  • Hahaah it's a really simple song

  • amp look's like a blues Junior NOS or maybe pro junior NOS

  • What amp is he using?

  • Ispired By "Led Zeppelin - Kashmir"

  • Hey ermm can you pm me the tabs or summing coz everyones tabs on ultimate guitar are messed pm! (or the chords) :)

  • Love how he ends with...."its a really simple song"...it's just that simple if you're an incredibly gifted musician.

  • his nose wuz a lil messed up

  • Wrong Dave, you are not from the Foo Fighters, you are the drummer of Nirvana and don't you forget it!

  • @PBANDSNOW dude, come on...

  • @THEDXFAN28 Kurt Cobains drummer, before Taylor Hawkins singer.

  • @PBANDSNOW dude, you dont have to explain to me who Dave Grohl is; But, i mean Nirvana lasted for 4 years with Dave as their drummer, but the Foo Fighters have been around for 16 years, man. I think it's safe to say he belongs to the Foo Fighters at this point.

  • @THEDXFAN28 thats because Kurt is dead :P

  • Hi, I'm new with the guitar stuff so, anybody can help me with the chords of the song Rope? please !!!. Thank you so much

  • dave, learn music theory.. its not that hard

  • @MrCold012 ahhh........what?

  • I want that guitar too anyone know of a new model exactly like it?

  • @Machinehead18 Gibson DG355

  • o shh, theres not a lot of clarity from the amp, but it sounds dirty and fuzzy and fucking badass

  • I want that guitar dave

  • I like how he says he knows nothing about music but then he starts talking and says once he has the riff out then he had to find the root of it haha you are a true musician Dave

  • What type of amp????????????

  • the sound of this amp makes me wanna puke

  • I wish Dave was my guitar teacher. Love how he admits he doesn't know everything about music but still makes THE BEST music around! Dave, you're the coolest guy ever.

  • Can't understand how Dave made Rope riff and he doesn't know actually how it is

  • Its all about Roland Jazz Chorus

  • The amp is a Fender '57 Twin-Amp, pretty good sound!! love it!

  • @baibaiway actually its a blues junior- and its sounds like shit.

  • there is a reason dave looks like jesus u know....

  • IT's a really simple song ?!!

    Correction ITs a PERFECT SONG!!!

  • He's my God♥____♥

  • Goddammit! I think I'm not the only guitar player in this world, who wishes so bad having like 1/500 of Dave's talent and genius! But I gave that up long time ago! This man is just too good and all-rounded! He's such a inspiration and such a decent, friendly, laid-back guy and then he fucking explodes on stage! Long live Dave and long live the Foo Fighters!

  • @nofx989 why give up?

  • Genius.

  • Well It makes me comfortable knowin Grohl can't read music ...Now I don't feel like I'm the only one who can"t!

  • @perfectionless i've played guitar for like 10 years and can't read a single note of sheet music. if you aren't in a fucking orchestra or something, and if you never plan on a career as being a studio musician, there isn't much of a reason to know or care about it. i'm extra dumb though, because as a kid, i quit playing saxophone in school, reading music for like 2 years, right before i started playing guitar. apparently touching a guitar made me forget every single stupid note symbol

  • whats the chord at 2:06?

  • @TheMrAwesomeDx it's just an a5 with F# bass note

  • it shocked hell out me when he said he couldn't read music and yet he's still a musical genius and you're my favorite artist/band of all time!!!! just saying

  • @ridck369 You really dont need to know music theory, well not like these classical players know music theory up the ass. It does help you out when your writing music to know some theory. Just know the basics and you'll be fine. Look at dave grohl, he said he cannot even read music, and hes a gift from god.

  • he's a genius!!!

  • that's kind of exactly what i do,i don't know much either

  • " That's kind of a nice chords..I don't know what that is, but .." Lol! Love Dave!

  • grohl rules

  • I thought tab counted as reading music. Surely Dave can read tab....

  • @sirdamian02

It's not reading music. "Reading music" is referred to sheet music reading.

  • Sorry if someone already answered this, but what amp is he using there?

  • i have to admit, the rope song is sick i love the riff and intro chords.

  • Thanks for putting this up. foos for ever!!!!

  • There you got it.

Reading music notes is unnecessary for guitarists, if you know how chords and notes work.

I mean it won't hurt to know it, but still, music is about trying things out - like Dave does.

  • @Kekkeyu I agree.

  • The tone coming out of that amp is stunning

  • @reniisgod are you serious?

  • @reniisgod stunningly crappy, just because it's an old fender amp, doesn't make it sound nice

  • @reniisgod Indeed it is... Anyone know what kind of amp it is?

  • @Anonix123 its a tweed fender champ

  • @Vikck It is a Gibson Trini Lopez, dude :)

  • That's a cool guitar!! What is it?

  • The Man is a Gee-Knee-Arse!!!!!!!! A true rock God!

  • Amazing tone.

  • Epic tone!

  • Dave Grholl killed Polly with his forearms

  • lmfao simple my ass!

  • @GBear1025 it is easy

  • Dave's tone is amazing.

  • did he said GREECE ?

  • fuck, I want a gibson DG soooo much

  • If you can read music, that's great. if you can't, BUT you can hear and understand music that puts you way ahead of everyone. This is what makes Dave such a God. Thumbs up if you agree.

  • the first riff of rope that he played sounds like bad reputation from thin lizzy

  • Presence... hmmm.... Rope does sound like Achillies Last Stand. At least he rips from the greats. Lol.
