Actually WEP is referred to as both Wired Equivalent Privacy and Wireless Encryption Protocol... so Wess is also technically correct

Just wanted to correct my previous comment. Although some people do refer to WEP as Wireless Encryption Protocol, it is in fact incorrect. WEP, WPA, and WPA2 aren't protocols, they are levels of certification as provided by the Wifi Alliance, therefore, to call it a protocol would be incorrect.

Indeed. WEP means "Wired Equivelency Protection". See, when wifi was first released, the standards people decided that wifi should be as secure as a wired network at least. As it happens, wired networks aren't too secure at all if an intruder can gain access to the wires. And since anyone with a wifi card can gain access to the virtual wires of a wireless connection, WEP isn't very secure at all. Which is why everyone uses WPA/WPA2 nowadays.
