i like how Foley is one of those people who really factors in willingness to play and effort, as well as skill, if he sees a bad player that tries, he wont hate him, but he will want him out for the sake of the team, but if he sees a good player that doesnt try, as you see here, he HATES him.
as a lifelong blackhawk fan, i always liked bob probert, the hawks cocaine
snorting goon. i was sad to hear he passed away a few years ago. now he's the deceased ex-blackhawk cocaine snorting goon. none of this has to be personal, it's about hockey. after aprox. 30 yrs, foley knows hockey & should not feel bad for what he said. he didn't want the man to die, he was just glad
he didn't have to deal with him anymore.foley's just an announcer, i don't think he can put a voodoo curse on someone.
So 7 years ago, Pat Foley tells the truth about a player on hockey-related terms only, and now he's a bad person because the guy he was talking about died a few days ago? Some of you need to step back and realize the stupidity of that and adjust your comments accordingly.
An individual, with God-given talent, can either use that talent to the fullest of his ability, or squander it after getting some big fat contract. Karpovtsev unfortunately chose the latter (depriving fans of what they were PAYING to see - a team member exhibiting his skills, along with his teammates). His lack of effort (some call it laziness) is probablly why Pat Foley vented his feelings against Karpotvsev. He brought resentment onto himself. Foley, never wanted him to die in a plane crash !
Fuck you Foley......spoken like a true TV turd that never "laced em up"......There are no cowards in the NHL. You should be first witness to that account.
The fact that Potsie died tragically yesterday does not diminish one single thing that Pat Foley said about him while wearing a Blackhawks sweater. This was the general consensus of the majority of Blackhawks fans when Karpovtsev wore the Indianhead sweater.
@fastfootedone You never heard of, Pat Foley? Then you certainly don't know anything about hockey. And now you are tying in his comments to Karpovtsev's death? You are an idiot. A man gave his HONEST opinion on a lazy, disgruntled player he watched night after night. As he said, even the Toronto players were happy to see him go. Did Foley wish him death? Do you think he's happy he died? These comments were made on March 9th during the 2004 season. Take your meds and go take your nap.
@VinBad007 "Single, never married, no kids and I have a hundred favourite tv shows. Of course being Italian, I love Italian food! Did I mention I do voice overs for a living?" So basically you're a loud-mouth who loves eating and sitting on his ass while talking crap about dead athletes through the anonymity of youtube. For the record, Foley did say those things about Karpo in 2004 but he wouldn't repeat them today through the guise of "honesty" you insensitive prick.
@AlanJits You are an angry little fella, aren’t ya? I guess if I was into Zelda I would be lonely and angry too! Grow up! How did I speak crap about a dead athlete? I merely repeated what Foley said you incredible moron. I responded to a comment a guy made telling Foley to “sleep well”, as if Foley should feel guilty about what he said over 7 years ago. But you didn’t see the comment I was responding to because it has been removed. THINK before you type your ignorant, uniformed thoughts!
@AlanJits Funny how none of you had the balls to anything about Foley's comments until AFTER Karpovtsev died. Way to jump o the band wagon! Unless you saw Foley dancing at his funeral, or have video of him laughing when he heard the news, you have no argument.
@VinBad007 Never heard of Foley until Karpotsev died. I went looking for old clips of him as a Ranger, and got this as the first post of him on youtube. Obviously things didn't work out in Chicago, and fans didn't respect him. In the heat of the moment Foley spoke. The problem I have is that Foley never "laced'em up". "How does Foley know how Karpotsev was feeling physically?" How bad his shoulder was? His concussion? Nowadays we know the implications of head injuries.......it was wrong.
@SuperThunderlips I can respect your opinion, however, this is not a case of never "lacing them up." As the Hawks' announcer, (for nearly 30 years) Foley observed Karpovtsev for four years. These are not just a few incidents he speaks of. Karpovtsev had a league-wide reputation for exaggerating and even faking injuries. I am not here to justify Foley’s opinion or bash Karpovtsev. But I do find it laughable that people are now bashing Foley for the comments he made 7 years prior to a death.
@VinBad007 How can someone who never played in a high school game, let alone a NHL hockey game call somebody out for having "no heart playing the game?"....Yes it is a case of someone never "LACING THEM UP"...Ok maybe he was hurt....maybe he couldn't perform. Do you know the pain and suffering these guys put up with every game and practice? You don't. If he sucked then trade him or cut him. He doesnt deserve a toungue lashing from a fukin announcer who just talks for a living.
@SuperThunderlips So you're saying every Hockey Analyst or Announcer who never played isn't qualified to give their opinion. Aren't they paid to do JUST THAT! So, if an Announcer has laced them up, it's okay to rip into a player ala, the way Mike Milbury or Don Cherry does? Please. An Announcer gave his honest opinion on a player. Whether you agree with them or not isn't the issue. If Karpovtsev didn’t die in the plane crash, we wouldn’t even be having this conversation about Foley.
@VinBad007 Pat Foley would never repeat those things today. As a fellow human being, there's probably a small part of him that wishes he didn't make things so personal. Have you ever thought of that? We all say things we regret even if there's some truth to it, but it takes a special kind of asshole to spit on Karpo's grave just days after he dies. Let me know when PF does that. In the meantime, find your humanity 'cuz right now you make me fucking sick.
@VinBad007 Pat Foley would never repeat those things today. As a fellow human being, there's probably a small part of him that wishes he didn't make things so personal. Have you ever thought of that? As much as I hate the Rangers, you never want to see things like this happen.....EVER. The recent trend of professional hockey players dieing in the last few years, with four alone this Summer, has become disturbing.
Strange how when I heard Karpotsev died on that flight, this was the first thing I thought of. I love Pat and this was totally out of character for him. I feel so sad for Alex and all the families who lost loved ones today. The real sad fact is that these were all relatively young guys who I'm sure had young families. R.I.P.
@stw2323 Yeah right! Since when is speaking your opinion about a player who coasts and collects a pay-cheque "out of character"? People are so used to the PC BULLSHIT, they get offended when TRUTH is spoken!
@stw2323 The way he played had nothing to do with his death. Alex constantly tried to get out of games. Yes, it is sad that he died, but he was a lazy player. RIP.
@grits207 pshh cry about it. Karpovtsev was just as unprofessional as what pat foley said.. The best announcers in the nhl. Doc and Foley!!! RIP Karpovtsev
Alright, Foley may have not liked Karpovtsev, and the rest of the Hawks probably didn't think to fondly of him. But come on! The man still died, and Pat Foley would never want anything like this to happen to anyone! This rant was solely about hockey, and had nothing to do with Karpovtsev himself. People need to stop criticising Pat Foley. RIP AK
@grits207 You've never criticized someone that went on to die? Plus, you're wishing someone else to die, whereas Foley only criticized Karpovtsev's play and character as a player, he didn't wish tragedy upon him. So I'd say you're the one looking foolish.
@24boilers I don't care about him criticizing somebody that went on to die, obviously everybody goes on to die at some point so that's irrelevant.
What Foley said was completely unprofessional and disrespectful, especially coming from somebody who has probably never played a game of hockey in his life. I thought Foley was a scumbag for making those comments long before Karpovtsev died.
@grits207 Fair enough, you're entitled to your opinion, but so is Foley. We're not going to win an argument over differing opinions, I know that much hah.
Pat Foley was spot on with his assessment of Karpovtsev as a player. The guy never played a full season in his life, and the Blackhawks were not the only team with which he had a bad reputation. That being said, while he may have been a bad teammate, he was probably a decent human being and he certainly did not deserve to die in a plane crash. His family and friends have my sincere condolences. Once a Blackhawk, Always a Blackhawk.
@fnBASStard That is patently ridiculous. Nowhere does Pat suggest that AK was a bad human being or deserved a fate like this. I am sure he is as saddened as anyone about this. Pat is a hockey analyst. Rightly or wrongly, he is paid to give his opinions about the PLAY of a member of the team. We must be careful not to sanctify the dead unnecessarily, or to attack those who may have had a criticism or two of that person in the past. Let's keep some perspective.
@fnBASStard Are you suggesting that we all refrain from legitimate criticism of everybody in the future, on the off chance that he or she might die in a completely unrelated circumstance later on? Please. Rest in peace AK and all who perished.
i moved away from chicago after spending 30 yrs the south east side. i think the thing
i miss most is foley calling the games. he sat through a lot of yrs. of $wirtz$ bullshit (as did the fans) & always calls it as he sees it. thanks pat.
The way Wirtz ran the show... I'm surprised that he didn't cut Foley's mic. It wasn't unprofessional...... it was Pat, as a Blackhawk fan, being frustrated with having to watch some absolutely dreadful hockey.
With the way Foley ripped Karpovtsev, one has to wonder what went through Foley's mind during the two+ decades he had to bite his tongue when he probably wanted to rip William "Dollar Bill" W. Wirtz. I'd love to hear Foley's thoughts on how Dollar Bill mismanaged the team and blacked out home games. It also hurts to think of all the great Probert fights we could've seen Foley call if the thankfully deceased owner didn't blackout the games.
@Camps2630 Mike gets annoying quick, his voice is good but after awhile i get really annoyed, being from Chicago and a hawks fan maybe im just bias but Pat Foley and Eddie Olczyk are my fav announcers, others are Jim Hughson that canadian guy and I like Washingtons play by play guy Joe Beninati
@sMartinique94 how is that unprofessional? if the dickwad karpovtsev actually put forth an ounce of work ethic, then foley wouldn't have done this. If you want to see unprofessional, listen to that cunt Marty Brennaman who singlehandedly makes me hate the Cincinnati Reds b/c of the classless garbage that spews from his mouth
I liked Pat Foley but find it funny how he praises that loser Bryan McCabe. During the most recent NHL strike, he played a few games here in Sweden, and talk about a guy who wasn´t trying. The local Newspaper in the town where he played derisively called him McBacon beacuse he was so overweight. One headline in the paper also said: McCabe or Mrs Miller, we´d just as soon take Mrs Miller. He played 10 games here before going back home to Canada with his tail between his legs. He was pathetic.
This comment came from the hip during a televised road game. When Pat returned to the United Center, he said that someone hugged him that he had never met before because of these comments. I wish you could see the look on Troy Murray's face as this was being said. CLASSIC.
This is why everyone loves Pat Foley. I heard him speak at the 2009 Blackhawk Convention, and he is truly one of Chicago's own treasures.
One good thing came of the Karpotsev debacle: the Hawks dumped him to the Islanders in exchange for NY's 2005 4th round draft choice, which turned out to be Niklas Hjalmarsson.
Jesus, Foley verbally BOMBED him!! During those bad years, When Theo Fleury and Alexander Karpovtsev were here, they were the exact opposite of the Hawks were when they were good. Embarassing.
I still cannot believe we traded McCabe for that clown. Mike Smith is such an ass clown! So glad we know have Dale Tallon, John McDonough and Scotty Bowman running the show now. GO HAWKS!!!
I remember watching this live at the time: It was at the end of the second period at a game in New Jersey. After the zeros hit the clock, but before they went to commercial. There was a bit of a video montage that played as well.
...and besides, at the end, you can hear Pat say "We are through two periods in New Jersey." One of my favorite moments in a lifetime of watching hockey.
This wasn't during a game, it was during the pre-game while the Hawks were on the road. I spoke to Pat when they got back in to Chicago, and his first words to me were 'some guy that I don't know just hugged me for what I said about Karpoptsev' and laughed the entire time. Pat nailed what every Hawks fan was thinking that season.
Foley and Murray ?? God help us ....they only did two years together lol Pat and Dale were the true voice of the Hawks. No one has come close since then. Just for the record, I have the utmost respect for Troy. Completly different chemistry though.
I remember when the Blackhawks (Pat & Dale) would simulcast on Sportschannel & WBBM. The Islanders do it now, so why not? Most radio guys suck anyway.
Are you implying John Wideman and Troy Murray are somehow bad? Wideman is just as enjoyable as Pat and if you dont think Troy Murray is an upgrade over eddie O you are insane.
BTW, I'm referring to Mark Prior from 2004-2007, because in those years he was injuried all the time it seemed and only cared about collected millions while doing nothing.
The Mark Prior of 2002-2003 was different. He pitched with heart and determination. From 2004, everything went downhill after that.
Welcome back Pat. I respect the legend that is Pat Foley in Chicago , even though I just heard about him a few days ago. Good to see he'll be doing Hawks hockey again.
that guy at 42 seconds wasnt Karpovtsev, he played on the Islanders in 2003-04 and that wasnt the jersey they used
And he was the biggest piece of shit I ever saw in my life, I remember he got hurt in his first game for the Islanders and he wound up only playing 3 or 4 games, only Milbury the fucking moron would give up a 3rd round pick for him, idiot
another example was the 1980 Entry Draft.Montreal had the 1st pick, passing on local hero
Denis Savard, for Doug Wickenheiser. While Savard went on to HOF career,Wick was
booed to the rafters night after night at the Forum. He was shipped off to St.Louis and had
some success.Tragically he died of a rare form of cancer in his 30's.Did the fans in Montreal
cause his death.I think not.In sports, we boo the player, not the real person.

Pat Foley said it all. "Good Riddance."

JaskulaR 2 years ago
Karpovtsev last stop was Florida. He only played 9 more games after this rant by Foley.

this is the BEST pre-game audio EVER!!!!!!
bigbobbydahmer 3 years ago 4
This wasn't during a game, it was during the pre-game while the Hawks were on the road. I spoke to Pat when they got back in to Chicago, and his first words to me were 'some guy that I don't know just hugged me for what I said about Karpoptsev' and laughed the entire time. Pat nailed what every Hawks fan was thinking that season.

To me, Foley and Murray were THE voice of the Hawks on the radio growing up.
Foley has the greatest voice on radio and Wiedeman just can't match up.
Foley should come back to the radio on WGN and we'll all be good.
TalkingCardCreator 3 years ago
Foley and Murray ?? God help us ....they only did two years together lol Pat and Dale were the true voice of the Hawks. No one has come close since then. Just for the record, I have the utmost respect for Troy. Completly different chemistry though.
QtommyQ 3 years ago
I remember when the Blackhawks (Pat & Dale) would simulcast on Sportschannel & WBBM. The Islanders do it now, so why not? Most radio guys suck anyway.

It's great to have Pat back (on television of course).
What he said about Alexander Karpovtsev is what I think about Mark Prior when he was with the Cubs from 2004 to 2007.
HERE COME THE HAWKS!
Spr463 3 years ago 2
BTW, I'm referring to Mark Prior from 2004-2007, because in those years he was injuried all the time it seemed and only cared about collected millions while doing nothing.
The Mark Prior of 2002-2003 was different. He pitched with heart and determination. From 2004, everything went downhill after that.

that guy at 42 seconds wasnt Karpovtsev, he played on the Islanders in 2003-04 and that wasnt the jersey they used
And he was the biggest piece of shit I ever saw in my life, I remember he got hurt in his first game for the Islanders and he wound up only playing 3 or 4 games, only Milbury the fucking moron would give up a 3rd round pick for him, idiot
