Wow..I just want to say thank you for posting this video...I'm African American and already can see we face the same oppressions ...we don't belong to any of these lands except Africa and it took me to see this video to understand that we are not hated we are feared..but that's opinion. No matter if I'm in Canada or America I'm hated more so in America it seems but I will continue to educate myself and my family thank you ..I have a great topic to write about...proud African descendant
Also, Canada, I know this' hard to take, (some people want there Provinces to have more black people in them then others for some reasons), but, for the record, Nova Scotia has more African Canadians per capita than any other Province (50,000+ / 940,000).
@Ian74263 The reason why there are more blacks in other provinces (Ontario, Quebec, Alberta, etc.) is because Canada's largest cities are in these provinces. Black immigrants are more likely to end up in Toronto or Montreal, rather than Halifax.
lol nice im african-native american i learnt alot bot canada now. reason is because my gf is from canada and we used to mess with her alot about her bacon not being real bacon lol. but i gots the loves for her and i wanted to show her i lernt somethin about canada and i did :p.
I think this is very cool because I my self am a african canadian from Nova Scotia ! and my ancestors also were slaves from the south! Very Good Video
The Black Loyalists came to Nova Scotia in 1783 mostly as Free people after fighting in the British Army during the American Revolution. They were promised land, but were lied to and used - yet they survived (even when their communities were targeted, burned and torn down by racist white communities, groups and government).
The Black community Africville was torn down in the 1970s... and the citizens were moved into a dangerously under-resourced 'project' neighbourhood.
Of course they were promised land just like black ex slaves were promised 40 acres and a mule. Just like Native Americans were promised no further westward expansion. There seems to be a pattern here....promises made and promises broken.
@PraxisUnlimited Hopefully you know that Nova Scotia had the first "Free Black" settlement in North America. Yes, they were still slaves, but they had freedoms. Also, when you talk about this, it sounds like you're reading it from a book. EVERYONE FROM THE REST OF CANADA. I REPEAT, 99.99% OF NOVA SCOTIANS ARE NOT RACIST! JUST LIKE EVERYWHERE ELSE... I've heard a couple people say the "N Word" around me. Most of them are either Hicks (0.005% of the Pop.) or Indians (0.005% of the Pop.).
Did Canada have a significant amount of Africans as slaves too? I thought all the Africans in Canada were mainly first generation African-Canadians with parents from africa/caribbean etc?
Yes, African peoples were enslaved by the British and French in Canada. Black people have been in Canada for many centuries building successful communities in the face of blatant racist hatred and "smiling face" discrimination.
However, the first Black peoples in Canada were not all enslaved. Andrew DeCosta was a multilingual traveler and interpreter working on the East Coast. He worked with a European exploration team, I believe in the early 17th century.
All this is good but what about african canadian in Montreal I just moved MTL and went live in NJ I'll be NBA player represent black Afro-Canadian from Montreal you should talk about us like Americans who don't even think about Canada at all now you dont even talk or same country but different city I mean state but I think we say province Canada no oh whatever
This is terrific! Americans don't often even think about Canada at all, unless they need to get some dental work done, or have a sick child, but have no insurance.
