I remember this being one of the pieces that would be played during our brigade Pass in Review, where the Brigade commander, a full bird colonel would "inspect" the troops. I actually believe this is the tempo that was used, since a brigade is quite large to inspect, hence giving him more time to inspect.
Everybody needs to stop saying "Oh this is too slow, we played this much faster blah, blah, blah." The band that played this fine recording is British, and traditionally, European bands take marches at a "walking" pace as some people would say. It is better to be slow and correct than fast and wrong.
This is a classic military march. You can't march at 160 per with troops following behind. Some college bands today go for that super up-tempo stuff, and that's fine if you like that kind of thing. I'm and old military bandsman, and this is march tempo the way it should be. I have played Bravura numerous times and it brings back fine memories.
Look I know the Americans are very keen on playing marches at ridiculously high tempos but the march in the recording was played by a British band who, like the rest of Europe, play marches at a steady walking pace.
@emptyangel Damn right. I'm actually from Texas and I completely agree.Playing marches so fast that it isn't pleasant to hear doesn't make you a better band.
I'm in 9th grade and this is our next march for next marching season. I play lute, so I think being in the higher octave is killer. And I thought the "Klaxon" by Henry Fillmore was hard. No way, this is way harder.
This song brings back memories when i was in the military and we would have to do a "Pass in Review" for our new brigade commander. This song got stuck in my head until i finally looked it up. Great song!
My band is playing this and to me it sounded like a mixture between a carousel and a jewish song(please forgive me any jewish people if I offended you)
This brings back memories. I played this in a marching band, along with the Bombasto march, on July 4, 1979 in Coronado, CA. That was a loooong time ago. It's so good to hear it again that I might pick up the trombone again after 25 years.
haha this song was the most fun march i had in high school it was great flying on the slide of my trombone to hit all the notes on fast parts, thanks for putting it up
I played this march my senior yr in high school, & took 3rd at the Selma Band Review in 2007. Next to Washington Post, this is one of my favorite marches, except we only played the intro once, instead of twice, & then into the trio. Luv this march, & would play it again, at a reunion concert!
This song has been stuck in my head for soo long ! mainly because i hear it almost EVERYDAY because my CG line has to perform to this and i hear it during run throughs with the MB . I love my routine to this (: we've worked so hard to finish and now our first competition is this Saturday ! :D
@nadroj183 Yes , i do go to Golden West . Why do you ask ? We placed 2nd in the guard competition . But i'll take 2nd (: Good job Mustangs<3 we'll get'em at Vallejo !
That is the slowest version of this song I've heard!! I'm not a huge fan of marches of course for flute players there's tons of runs, it seems like my flute flies at times
I enjoy playing this song, at first i wanted to played first but then cuz there weren't no other clarinet players,so i had to play 2nd. But its still fun. And This is my first timee at my high school concert band so its going to be interesting, i just need the end part and i got the entire piece =). HOARRY 4 CLARINET!!!!!
@gordog209: It is! I had to play this my freshman year of high school on clarinet! The trio kicked my butt at first, but now I really miss playing this! (We're playing Purple Carnival now)
oh oh, and i know why everyone keeps mentioning the speed....they are jealous they were forced to play it faster and it was over too soon! XD

we are playing this this year XD
I love it even if i'm not on my beloved flute.....trumpets cool though too I guess.

truth4all2hear 1 month ago
Come on---120 on the march, 130-135 in concert.
Hugh0166 2 months ago
@Hugh0166 Yep...It should be at least 130 minimum for this type of march...but the slower tempo is good for people who are learning it.

The point of a march is that you're supposed to be able to march to it.

Any faster and with most bands it becomes unclear. I like it at this pace when you can hear the chord structure and that cool counter melody :)
