About 4 years ago, a doorman at the barbecue and blues club I was working at burned me a few c.d.s. Two singer-songwriters stood out to me, Tom Russell and Townes Van Zandt. Recently, I heard Tom's version of this song live, and it's also on his album with Gretchen Peters. He opened the show or second half of the show--I forget--with a neat tribute to influential singers that he sings to himself when writing songs. Undoubtedly, Townes is one of the great ones . . . neat flute addition there.

Townes' songs are so sad and beautiful that they reach your soul. Townes did not have the greatest voice in the world but no one can sing them with the same soulfulness as he did.

I think its that imperfection in his tone, and his rhythm, that makes it that more genuine and authentic. It touches you inside just that much more.
