  • thank you maangchi.....

  • Dearest Maangchi-shi, I have been following your videos for so long. I am a mother and a teacher and I am Korean-American...you have no idea how important your videos are to me. I can't speak Korean and I don't cook very well from those Korean cookbooks. My husband is very fluent and is 100% Korean, so we are both indebted to your cooking lessons. THANK YOU and may God bless and answer all your heart's desire.

  • @RegalLineage wow, thank you so much for your interest in my recipes.Cheers!

  • this looks like the chinese seaweed soup XDDD i love this, thank you

  • @mileyfantaxx Happy New Year!

  • @Maangchi Thank You!! Happy New Year :D

  • Hehe, my birthday is at the end of month, it'd be awesome if you could this for me! :D

  • gosh so good jejjee thanks

  • willl it make a difference if i dont put sesame oil?

  • Maangchi what other meat can i substitute for Beef? Thanks!

  • @ketobi You could use chicken, shrimp, mussels, clams..

  • @Maangchi Really? Thanks~

  • Maangchi Noona, You use Thai Fish Sauce Right? ^^

  • @KentA22nd @Maangchi Noona I have the same question... even, what is the brand? I find that fish sauces vary so much!

  • @trillance 3 crab fish sauce. I think it's produced in Vietnam. Check out the photo of the fish sauce in the ingredient section on my website. : )

  • my husband boiled the seaweed a little longer than what you suggested and it turned out really really really slimy...how can i fix this???

  • i made the soup. It tasted really good but uhm i think i did something wrong with the salad. Some of the seaweed is too slimmy. I don't like that at all. Ima try the salad some other times...

  • this soup is the best ! luv it !

  • Thank you for this. Umma made this for me all the time. I told someone that if they got sick, I would make it for them.

  • maangchi is it the same as kelp that you use to make stocks??

  • @srainy no they are different. Check the both photos of miyeok and kelp on the ingredients section on my website.

  • Thank you for this recipe!!

  • Is there many different types of miyeok? or wakame? :)

  • I cannot find the seaweed you use where I live, can I also use japanese Nori??

  • @rapturecz no,find wakame. Miyeok is wakame in Japanese.

  • @Maangchi maangchi i bought a chinese dried seaweed it is ok?

  • Thank you for this video I love Seaweed Soup! Now I can make it at home and enjoy!

  • I really love miyuk guk! i like to eat it with japchae and rice :D

  • is this the one the use in miso soup???

  • Japanese wakame seaweed work well too for this recipe.

  • @sky00002 yes, wakame is miyuk (or miyeok) in Korean. Thanks!

  • i dont know which dried seaweed to buy!

i bought one but i think its wrong because its thin and short strips. it tasted soooo bad!

how should the seaweed look like?

  • @dyanjennica09 Please check the photo of miyuk (miyeok) on the ingredient section on my website.

  • @Maangchi i saw the pictures and they look nothing like what i bought. i read in the comments section in your website that its okay to use the thin ones. coz mine's like that too. however, i tried soaking my dried seaweed in water for 20 minutes and the smell was VERY strong. is that typical for a dried seaweed?

  • @dyanjennica09 yes, when it's soaked, it will have strong flavor but it's usual. Check the package of the sea plant you have. Does it say "미역" (miyeok)? If so, you got the right ingredient.

  • Hi!

May I ask if you can eat this raw? I'm sure it would taste great too!

  • @hliew0 raw seaweed right? i do it all the time, i just soak it and rinse and i can eat two cups before I feel sick to stomach haha

  • i made the soup for my birthday this week and it was GREAT! Thank you so much!!!

  • yum! maangchi, can you please make kimchi fried rice someday? kasahamnida!

  • @gripgrlz check my kimchi bokkeumbap recipe on my website. "kimchi stir-fried rice" thank you!

  • does anyone know what type of seaweed it is?

  • @17thCenturyLlama It's called Miyeok in Korean. Check the ingredient section on my website. I posted the photo of the seaplant there. Happy New Year!

  • Alright thank you :), happy new year to you too ^^. All your recipes look so delicious, can't wait to try one myself!

  • 헤피 크리스마스 망치님! ^__^

  • @Korea4Me Happy Holidays!

  • Fish can be used too instead of beef. It gives a deep taste to the soup.

  • I LOOOOOVE SEA PLANT SOUP!!!!

  • Thanks for sharing.

Can I replace the beef with other types of meat?

  • You could use chicken

  • Oh, thanks for your quick reply.

Can't wait to make this soup for my family and my birthday is round the corner...hee...hee...

  • Hi~

    Before boil Miyuk,

you can fry it in pan with some oil like olive.

It takes time more shortly, and you can taste more mild soup.

  • is this soup good for your health?

  • yeah it's very healthy look it up in wikipedia..

  • i love this i eat it everymonth and on my birthday it is so GOOD

  • Do you know how to make the seaweed salad? You always see it next to the kimchi. Thank you for your time Maangchi!

  • yes, I actually posted the recipe with miyukguk recipe together. Check the recipe on my website. Thanks!

  • I don't think that you have it. When you eat this salad, there are so many sesame flavor into it.

  • oh,yeah? Please give me more description about the seaweed salad that you had. Anyway I have another recipe for miyuk salad which is hot spicy, sweet, and sour taste with lots of sesame oil flavor.

  • The ingredients that I see is some chili flakes, sesame seed, sesame oil, and that seaweed. If you go to the market, next to the kimchi is that seaweed salad. I hope that helps Maanchi. Thank you for your time.

  • My parents just moved to the other side of the country--I'm going to have to learn to cook Korean food for myself now! This is going to help so much, thank you :)

  • tmr is my birthday and i will be sure to make it ! :]

  • Happy Birthday!

  • wow, you sure are helping a lot of people. I am going to try some of stuff you put up here.

  • thank you!

  • I had to eat alot of that stuff today and yesturday cuz of my birthday so im sick of the stuff. lol!

  • I have been eating miyukguk for 2 days in a row.

  • The frozen minced garlic tip is sooo smart!

  • ty!

any chance of how-to for oden soup?

  • sure, I will include it in my future video recipes.

  • Hi, Maangchi! I absolutely love your videos! I'm Japanese but I was kind of getting tired of eating my own food then I found you thank God!!

Last two days I cooked watching your videos. continue your good work and I will definitely continue watching. Thanks so much.

  • thank you!

  • Maangchi Unni,

I LOVE your recipes. Thank you so much for all your hardwork! I can't tell you how helpful it is to have how-to videos on all the classic Korean recipes. I refer to them all the time. Any chance you could do DAKDORI TANG in the future? I tried it on my own yesterday and it burned a little :P

  • ok, dakdoritang is already one of my upcoming video recipes. Thanks!

  • Don't you need to add some salt or soy sauce? When I make this soup, I always have to add a lot of salt and/or dashida to get any flavor.

  • I use fish sauce instead of salt or soy sauce.Check my written recipe on my website.

  • why is it different? i watch another video and they put some eggs..actually its not a real cooking video its the video of super junior full house^^

  • hahaha..!!i'm going to make this on my birthday..!oh i can wait to taste it..hahah..my birthday is on dec 24:D

  • OMG this is one of my favorites especially around this time of year. I love this soup when I am sick. It makes me feel SO much better.

  • I remember when I was young, my mother would make this but at the begining when boiling water, my mother boiled beef bones until the water would turn (almost)white (for hours), then discard the bones and added the seaweed and meat. This soup is one of my favorites! It's soooooooo good! I'm glad you posted this! Yummmmmy!

  • oh, you are missing your mom's cooking now! : )

  • jovenhatsjr

i've seen alot of your videos the cooking is great but i wonder if seaplant is sold here in the philippines if you know of somewhere kindly notify me where to purchase

  • hi,please leave your question on the forum section "where to buy korean ingredients" on my website. You may get good answer from someone else.

  • I learned that seeweed has great amount of vitamin c and minerals which helps blood circulation and clean it. that's why moms eat it after they give birth to a baby. I think thats very interesting. ^^

  • You are right! It's healthy food.

  • my birthday is coming, and i'm going to cook one for myself~ thanks for ur video~

  • good idea! Invite some friends on your birthday. Happy Birth Day in advance! : )

  • Do you know what type of seaweed you use?

  • hi, please check out my ingredient blog on my website. I posted the photo of miyuk (sea plant) there. Thanks!

  • I'm just curious... Is there a reason why you boil the seaweed first then only add the beef? Can it be the other way round: cook the beef first to create the broth then add the seaweed?

  • When you make soup using beef, beef should be added in boiling water. If you put the beef into cold water and boil it, blood from the beef will come out and the soup will look brownish. You can check out my radish soup video where I used the same method.

  • Ah.. now I understand. I never cook soup with beef before that's why I don't understand. If I use pork or chicken, then I will boil cook the pork and chicken first then add the seaweed. Am I right?

  • I think so. : )

  • yummy! I always want to know how to make this soup. And the salad looks good too. Keep up your videos. You'll be the famous korean chef on youtube

  • Thanks,

  • i guess koreans will eat this during their b'day right ? masheketta ! ( sorry i dont know how to say it's delicious in hangu..

  • Yes, all koreans eat this soup on their birthday. : )

  • I'm Korean and I don't know how to make any Korean food. This is great! My mom used to make this for me on my birthday, I didn't know what kind of seaweed to use to make this but now I know it's wakame! Thank you! By the way I'm vegetarian so can I skip the beef?

  • yes, you can skip the beef. How about using some mushrooms in it?

  • how do you write miyuk in korean?

  • "미역" : )

  • Love your video very much, mam. Take care and be healthy. Thank u.

  • ok, I will try to be healthy. : ) I should not eat too much food. : )

  • Mam, if it's ur recipe and cooking i will surely eat a lot and maybe exercise some if i'm not feeling lazy.Korean and Thai food are my favorite. Now that i found ur site, i may not be able to cook as good as yours but i can try now. More power to u and stay healthy. i always say this to people i care for. thank u very much.

  • Maanqchi you are the best!)

  • you cool,too!

  • mmm the seaplant is wakame? (i think wakame is the japanese name.. but im not pretty sure) mmm the scientist name is Undaria pinnatifida....

    i love your videos!!!

  • yes, it's wakame in Japanese and Miyeok in Korean. I looked up Wiki now. Undaria pinna..! oh, it sounds like too nerdy : )

  • lol yeah.. well im a biologyst XD... and i work with seaweeds i love all algae kingdom XD

and yeah i love to eat them.. but i just know miyeok and nori... here in mèxico we dont use to eat seaplants... to bad...

  • LOL

  • OMG! Thank you, this is my favorite Korean soup! My mom used to make this for me when I was a little girl.

  • birth day soup, all koreans know this soup

  • oh yea! i had this for every one of my birthdays. mmm i love putting the rice in the soup and mixing them together. its the best! haha ill make this soon

  • oh, forgot to say, besides making kimbap, i also made miyuk salad for her =D taste good! anyway, do people like chill it before eating? i love miyuk XD

  • kimchibabygurl

Yes, miyuk salad will be better taste when served cold.

  • Or do you think if we don't rinse the sea weed (sea vegetable) the vitamins and minerals in it wopuld be too strong?

I have watched a few of your vids since last night and will be trying some. It would be helpful if you stated how many people a particular recipe serves. Youe videos are great. Thank you!

  • Hi, linguy22

These are my answers regarding your questions.

1.Yes, you can use fresh fish or shrimp, mussels, clams, or oysters in Miyuk guk.

If you don't want to use any animal products at all, I'm afraid to say this soup will not be tasty.

2.Would you check my blog ? I posted a more detailed recipe there. check my seaplant soup video in my blog.

  • Hello Maangchi!

Thank you for your cooking videos. I am an addict of (healthy) food videos and I am also thinking of starting my own. I have a few questions/comments.

For this dish, can we use fish or shrimp instead of the beef? Also, if we did not want to use any animal products at all (no meat, no fish) BUT still make it tasty, do you have a recommendation?

Also, I would not throw out the rinse water since the iodine and vitamins and minerals would be thrown out. (continued)

  • That's a very good point that you are worried about loss of some nutrients such as iodine when the seaplant is soaked and rinsed. However, I will rinse it because I am also worried about eating the dust that accumulates when it is being dried.

  • thanks! u gonna show us how to make bibimbap?

  • cvfdfdfdf

ok, bibimbap. I will let you know when I post it.

  • This seaweed dish is absolutely recommendable

  • thanks so much, maangchi! happy new year to you and may you keep posting more videos in 2008.

  • jasoninparis

    Thank you! Happy New Year!

  • Dear Maangchi:

Could please show me how to make "seafood stew", I am not exactly sure the name, but there are a lot of seafood and vegetables in a hotpot. It looks like bulgogi stew. Thanks

  • iamsentra

The dish sounds like "Mae Woon Taang". Ok, I will include your request in the list of my upcoming cooking videos.

    Thanks,

  • Maangchi,

Have you ever thought of talking about regular ingredients that Korean Cooking requires or what's typically in your pantry? It would be neat to know how you stock your pantry. :)

I can't wait to try some more recipes out. I have been lazy of late when it comes to cooking. eek!

  • punkonthis

lol, You must be curious what my pantry looks like. Answer: "it's very messy and crowded" : )

Thank you for your interest in my cooking videos.

  • I just wanted to tell you that the thing you've started doing with the minced garlic is ingenious, when I get home, I'm going to take that big bag of garlic I get at CostCo and peel it and food process it and put it in the freezer! Thank you for that very helpful tip! I love your videos, the food you make is awesome!

  • dazigg

    You are awesome, too!

    Thanks!

  • Thanks Maangchi! :D

  • maangchi!!!! i love your videos!! I watch them at work and I get really hungry and cant wait to go make them at home... please dont stop posting. I'll be waiting for your next one :)

  • sunsavesmoney

Thank you, I will try to keep posting. : )

  • szheng

Hi! As you see the recipe here, it's very easy to make this soup.

    Happy Birth Day!!

  • Thank you for the video. it's my birthday in 2-day, i wish i can find this soup in the restaurant. Congrats on your 16th video! happy holiday to you also!

  • thanks and happy holidays to you too! congratulations on your 16th video!

  • Thanks krisfaun!

  • Maangchi, is the Miyuk Salad that you made in this video, the same as the Seaweed Salad they sell in Asian Markets and they serve at some sushi restaraunts?

  • dazigg

Yes, I think that's miyuk salad. Sometimes, you will find salad that looks like shredded seaplant which is made of miyuk stem.

  • When I lived in Korea, someone made this for us, but they didn't have any meat in it. I think it would have tasted better with some beef. Thanks for this recipe.

  • Tamar1973

The korean who made miyuk soup for you must be a vegetarian. : ) You can replace beef with chicken, clams, mussels, oysters, and even dried anchovies.

  • You may have a point. They knew we were SDA (sam-yeok).

  • Ooh, a seaweed soup/salad. Now that's interesting! I saw some girl last time I was in the Asian supermarket who picked up three packs of seaweed and later when I checked out the pack I was wondering why, because on the back it said "Not for consumption, only for decoration!". I hope she'll be okay heh.

I'll buy some seaweed next time I get there. My kimchi is yummy btw! Love to eat it with rice and tuna fish. =D

  • mrcuda

hehe, I hope so, too. oh, your kimchi is delicious? Wonderful!

  • (sorry pressed enter too fast!)

as soon as I find this sea plant around where I live.

  • Thnak you so much Maangchi. I'll try this as soon as I find this se

  • LeylaRandomness

hi, Thank you very much! Please update me how your soup goes later.

  • really interesting videos -- thanks!

  • adamp108

    Is it? Thank you!!

  • Of course! I'd really like it if you could do some vegetarian recipes, or just give vegetarian alternatives :) I don't know much about Korean food, so I find your videos quite intriguing!

  • adamp108

Thank you for your interest in my cooking videos. :)

  • Yum :) Having miyuk guk always makes me feel warm.

  • orienkorean

annyoung! Yes, it's healthy food, too.

    Thank you!

  • I really love your videos,, Thanks for sharing your recipes I will try them someday :-) Happy Holidays to you, too!!

  • jlauram

    Thanks!

  • Thanks for another wonderful video !! I wanted to ask if a corned beef brisket they sell in USA is same as a beef brisket in Your Recipe ? Corned Beef Brisket looks like a Beef Brisket with a separate sealed pouch of pickling spice wich I can leave out. I think it is the same cut of beef.I also wanted to tell You our Florida weather went from almost 80 down to 39 and windy tonight in only 8 hours !! That is quite a drop all at once !!That is the hard part about Florida weather .

  • bertintowncenter

It must have been so cold there. Be careful not to catch a cold! : )

We had a big snow storm yesterday here.

I picked the beef brisket in the meat section at a grocery store. When I make beef soup, I always use brisket part. Thank you!

  • I love The Police!

  • BuzAuken

So do I! You have a good taste in music!

  • bertinintowncenter, I think the corned beef brisket is cured to retain the red color we associated with corned beef. It also has a flavor even without adding the spice pouch (which I think is mostly for aroma).

  • himasf

    hope bertinintowncenter reads your comment.

Thank you for replying on behalf of me.

  • It seems like there wouldn't be much salt in the soup...is it bland? or does the fish sauce make it salty?

  • Wivanunu

Yes, the fish sauce is very very salty. If it is too bland for you, add some more fish sauce or salt after making it. I like soup which is not salty. Thanks!

  • Hey Maangchi, Great Video!

  • jaybobed

    Thank you!

  • I heard that new moms eat this soup only for several days. Is that still practiced? Also, what flavor does the seaplant impart in the soup? I guess I have to try it for myself on my birthday next week!

  • himasf

    Happy Birth Day!!!

Yes, I wrote about it on my blog, check it out please. After reading it, you may not want to try it. : ) I can't explain what flavor it has.
