I predicted that 2008 would be the year of Maria. Maria played best tennis I've ever seen her play in Australia. She really looked ready to step up and set the standard for the rest of the field. But the shoulder injury came back. It's really too bad. She'll regain that form eventually, and I can't wait until she does.
It's the biggest shame in the world that Maria got injured again in 2008. She was so set to make it her year... can you imagine if she'd converted the match point against Safina, what would've happened?
You can easily lay Maria's loss in Wimbledon down to her shoulder, it clearly affected her play.
It's just so sad. The same goes to 2007. Maria looked so ready to dominate the year with a great end to 2006 and AO Final and then she had to stop again because of injury.
2009 is half gone, but if Maria can regain her form she could finish the year in the top 10 as she has tons of opportunities to gain points. I think she'll be a factor at the US Open, and maybe even Wimbledon if she can get the matches in.
I wonder why so few women's Slam finals go three sets these days. The French and US Open finals this year were good matches, but it's odd that so many have gone straight sets lately...

Maria could have had a year equal to her epic 2006 year but that torn tendon in her shoulder really cost her :(
