I REALLY disagree, but hey, your opinion. I see your points, and even though I cannot even begin to think about agreeing, I can see why you'd be bothered by them.
The different amount of modes made the overall adventure feel more diverse than sloppy, though; if the modes sucked then yeah, it'd feel sloppy, but it adds nice diversity to see platforming done in all these ways. Just thought I'd say that in case you didn't think like that. -shifty eyes-
To the haters, there's something to be said about respecting opinions, even if you disagree with them. People's reviews of a game basically boil down to their personal opinion, and you should really form your own and not let one person's opinion get to you!
this is my first...and probably last review of his. A) not everyone has played the original one B) updated level design and minigames=win C) this game is directed to a younger audience who of course probably never played the original(i know...kinda the same as A) and C)you voice irritates me.
@evilkaz200 I agree with you. I think that's the reasoning behind Nintendo's "rehashing" of their old classics, to allow younger audiences to be able to experience them since chances are they don't have the system it was originally released on. In some cases, such as SS Ultra, there's more content than the original so that even people who played the original get at least something fresh.
forget you and your review. Big nintendo fan my DONKEY! If i want to get the game then ill get it. I like nintendo but that doesn't mean i don't have room for sony or Microsoft. I never follow kirby that much(come on he so simple but thats what makes him so cool) but i got the game liked it and kept it for while(new games, sorry) You do not need to be a big nintendo fan to like this. Oh and for some people like 8 OR 10, the SNES is gone and having a remake is very helpful.
Actually, I never played the original Superstar. I owned a Genesis and not a SNES. However, this was easily my favorite DS title of 08. I simple to play, but it has some great challenges. The game is actually kinda lengthy to me. I don't think you actually unlocked that much, NC. There is about double the content here then from the original SS. The stylus minigames ARE worthless, but they are only a very small part of the game. The boss arenas and large amount of specials made this a joy.
think isnt a personal reflection of a game. this is a review of a game meaning descibing whats in the game, its faults, etc. i dont see what dose the original game has to do with the ds game because of cource this is a review of the ds game.
reviews have nothing to do with personal opinion, nor comparing to the past game or a game from another console.
a review is a summarization of what is in the end its self.
I don't know what your problem is. I talk about the things that come to my mind when I play a game. I don't hold back because it's not objective enough.
lol, you have such a snooty voice in this vid. I respect your opinion, even though I like this game. It's a fun, mixed bag for a lot of peoplke, and the multiplayer is a cool addition.
The only things I don't like about this game SO FAR is that it's broken up into pieces (I was like WTF when I beat the Spring Breeze and saw credits) and that up doesn't make you fly. I like it like that.
funny i just beat the original on an emulator pretty damn good thought meta knights revenge and milky way wishs were the best king dedede was so easy to beat on spring breeze its laughable just bomb him a couple times and he's done
well yeah, Spring Breeze is THE EASIEST GAME in the entire collection. It's difficulty even clearly says 1 OUT OF 5. It's for beginners, or people who just want a quick dose of Kirby action.
Good review. The only Kirby game I've played long-time was Kirby Air Ride(Game Cube), and I did in fact really enjoy it. As much as I want to believe that I'd like this game, and as much as I need a new DS game(I have like, 4 right now), I don't really think the game's for me. In fact, I don't really think the DS is for me altogether. The only games that I really liked were Wario Ware Toutched and Mario Kart DS. If you haven't played those games, PLAY THEM.
I 100% with him the SNES game was soooooooo much better it has this arcade feeling that you can never get for a DS game, although i thought this game was really great i don't at the same time if i never played Kirby super star i probably would love this game but since i have i don't enjoy this game it leaves something untouched for me.
I personally enjoyed this more than the SNES original. I liked the bonus material, even if it was the same stuff over again, like True Arena, Metaknight Ultra, etc. But hey, people have different opinions on different things, and it didn't stop it from being a good review.
I agree the game is fun but few compare to the original nes game. Even aside from that the game has no real notable storyline and lacks structure. Not the worst game but could have been done better. 7/10
the only thing I want to know more than anything else, is what content will I get from the DS version that will differ from my SNES version besides it being portable?
the only thing I want to know more than anything else, is what content will I get from the DS version that will differ from my SNES version besides it being portable?
This was a good honest review, although not very informative.
But I must say inform you that the original Kirby was for the Gameboy, the one for the NES was just the first Kirby game where he had the copy ability.
Great review. I frickin' hate this game. I wanted classic kirby platforming, and they give me a bunch of minigames! I'd give it more like 5 out of 10.
have to disagree with your review. I found it fun and refreshing that the game was non linear.
On one hand KSS is is a good beginner platformer. On the other hand it's got a 'fighting game style' challenge with the arenas. The powers having various move sets adds depth and a varied experience when doing power runs and beating the same bosses.
It's a great universal game. The controls are fantastic and it's easy to see how KSS would later influence the Smash Brothers series.
I think that the bite sized different games are were what was special about the game. That's what most people like about it. And I'm not bitching, I'm commenting.
magic mirror was the only game i will stand to play, other that squeak squad, only because 3 other friends have it so we can all do it at the same time :), but this game looks unappealing...
and one more thing there is this one game coming out on the wii that looks good.
Its called mushroom men the spore wars. Its a 3d party game form a company called red fly. Do not think it sucks sense its 3d party. the company that is making it has not put out a game and les claypool is doing the music. they have spent about 2 years working on it.
i used to have this on snes as a kid but it got lost over the years :( it was my fave game to play with a friend theirs a nice amount of content in the game and since i lost mine im happy they decided to remake it on ds! its the only kirby game i ever liked when i bought the n64 version it was complete trash to me lol
I was kind of dissapointed to see this game get a higher score than Wario Land which I enjoyed more but I guess this game isn't half bad.I totally agree with you though on playing this on the SNES.
Good point on playing it on the SNES, but if someone did not have said system... This would be a good substitute. At least I think so, I have it for DS...
I got this game at bestbuy for 24.99, much more appealing then the gamestop 34.99 and I decided to buy it.
I would give it a 7/10 but thats just me.
thanks nerchris, I totally agree how the structure of the game sucked and was just a re hash of the NES game. regardless, I think its fun to have on the go.
i look towards game play in a game but i`m not big on kirby like i am mario but it does look good granted there could be a story line and ive rarely seen a good mini for any game
There is an IGN logo on the bottom right. Friggen IGN has to slap their crappy logo on everything and claim it's theirs, when this footage was actually sent out to press by Nintendo. That's why I like Gametrailers better; they only put their logo in the videos on stuff they actually record themselves, not every single trailer.
Some pretty mature comments here, especially with the voting down of anything close to saluting Chris for this review.
Anyways, I liked it. Nostalgia and being "Hard" are one thing, but as Chris stresses, inconsistency in the core gameplay and the lack of a more "nostalgic" storyline and gameplay that's substituted with mini-games IS a disappointment on a cosmic scale, despite your opinion. Good job neverchris
All you idiots see a retro sidescroller and you all priase it like its some rarity!? I could get this game any day on the gameboy. I could program this everyday if I knew how to. Games ar meant to be fun God damn it! Not supposed to be Nostalgic or too hard to not be fun!
Sometimes a harder game is more fun because it makes you feel like you've earned success rather than it being handed to you. Of course, this matter on how well the challenge was designed (Bad controls, confusing visuals, etc. aren't good challenges).
And whats wrong with nostalgia? If it gets people into buying these kinds of games than great. Its fun to those who feel nostalgic about the game. For everyone else, we'll just play a different game.
Great review, Chris. I missed the original on the SNES, and I've become a bit of a Kirby fan over the years but couldn't get an original Superstar cart, so this was a pretty good buy for me. But if you've played the original, I can pretty much see what you're talking about. Keep up the good work and ignore anyone that bitches at you.
Way to go NC, shoving your ACTUAL OPINIONS ahead of what everyone thinks. I read an EGM review of Wario Land: Shake It! which claimed the artwork was "prettier than Odin Sphere" and just acted like they were paid to say that it was awesome (well, at least one of them).
Yeah, that's kind of my thing. I got hooked on Kirby games so now I just play them all though seriously, I haven't been that impressed with any of the latest games. Canvas Curse was excellent though.

Hard is fun sometimes, because you earn your victory/win.
So you hate Mario? Metroid? Kid Icarus? Kirby?
IDIOT.

I wholly agree with you, Chris.
Always preferred Dreamland 3, anyhow.

What is a remake of the SNES one??
Hey can you make a review for Elebits, endless ocean or ThrillVliie: Off the Rails Wii??
Nice vids!! keep on the good work!!

a remake of the SNES one means they "re-make" the SNES one

Great review, Chris. I missed the original on the SNES, and I've become a bit of a Kirby fan over the years but couldn't get an original Superstar cart, so this was a pretty good buy for me. But if you've played the original, I can pretty much see what you're talking about. Keep up the good work and ignore anyone that bitches at you.

Thanks for the review man, think you've just stopped me from wasting £25-£30 on this.
Although I wasn't a fan of the footage repeating over and over and over XD
Still though, good review :)

Yeah, pretty spot on review.
I enjoyed the original gameboy game and fell in love with the NES game enhancements.
But since then the only Kirby game I've thoroughly enjoyed was Canvas Curse, and it wasn't exactly a traditional kirby game
