Why show us an illegal serve @ 3:46 ? Honestly many of us are still struggling to teach people that serving out of the hand is not acceptable. I know you are just drilling but come on.
@nsofast he is not actually serving here, but merely starting the rally in a practical way. Warming up hitting or blocking properly is best started in this way: a medium-fast "serve" with a very small amount of topspin.
@nsofast I've never even considered that would be a problem for anyone nsofast so thanks for pointing it out. I would recommend pointing the kid in the direction of some international level matches and saying "see".
Sorry, William, but I would rather agree with ChZuli. Except for killer shots the racket in the final phase is forward-facing, not flew away sideways. Take a look at this guy:

Try to develop a similar technique and you will get much higher in the world ranks.
@anvimi Thanks anvimi but that would be taking a step backwards for me. I would lose my best shot which is my backhand topspin out wide to the opponent's backhand with some sidespin so it curls outwards. The finishing position is different depending on what shot you're trying to play.
There are many reasons why I'm not at the top of the world ranking, however my backhand topspin is the reason why I am as high as I am.
@anvimi It's a technique. The fundamentals are there. Liam Pitchford's style is just that, a different style. Choose the one that you prefer. I watched William in live matches many times and his BH was rarely in trouble even against players far higher ranked.
@EDGQ1013 You are correct and this is something you should do when the ball is coming slowly and is falling quickly by the time it gets to you. In those situations you want to have more forwards momentum to help time your shot which cold also involve taking a step forwards. You would usually not have time to do this in normal speed rallies.
You have to be so flexible and ready to vary your shot depending on what's coming towards you. I believe the wristier technique better allows for this.
Very nice to see pro TT players taking some time for TT fanatics (on youtube)
Hoped to find a training vid from the pro himsel about the forehand topspin.
And to be more precise a vid were I can find an answer to opponents who block my topspin back to my body (turning point) al the time. Don't really know how to deal with that problem. Maybe you have some advice? Thx in advance!
@ChZuli U reckon his technique is ugly?! do u even know who he is, William Henzell, professional table tennis player with one of the best backhands ever!
basically your just starting with your racket and wrist below the table height and come upward butjust before u make contact with the ball, u close the racket face(this is what i do i asked just to make sure whether i got the stroke right. if imwrong please suggest changes.)
@Detherocable The starting position of your racket (in regards to height) will vary depending on what ball you are facing. If you are facing a slow, heavy topspin you'll need to start with your racket higher and racket angle closed to come over the top of the ball and counter the topspin.
If the ball has some backspin you will probably need to drop the racket face a little, although this depends on the height of the backspin ball. You should generally avoid dropping the level of your racket.
It's tough to tell from the video, but it looks like you take the ball a little bit closer to the tip of the racket, instead of in the middle. I'm guessing this is done to get more racket speed at contact and therefore more spin?
@SchemeSC In theory, yes, as the tip of the racket will be moving faster than the other parts of the racket. Now it's not always easy to get to choose where on the racket you make contact and many times I'm just happy to get ball on racket.
Best tutorial video i have seen. Simple and straight forward information qhich you can start to use straight away in your practice. Looking forward to more videos - mike
@zakc01 Timing and practice! As the video mentioned, you won't always get the same shot so you need to work on how to adjust timing to different shots, which will make you more consistent.
Also you should generally be hitting the ball in the center toward the outer part of the racquet for backhands.
This is the best videos I've seen on YouTube describing how to to do a backhand. My only query is what to you do if you want to do a slow or heavy topspin backhand loop. Cheers
THIS IS SO TRUE. I WAS EXPERIMENT WITH THIS WRIST ACTION. CONSEQUENLY MY BACKHAND BECAME MY DOMINATE SIDE. i got some slack about it for a while. "PEOPLE SAID IT WOULD MAKE MY shot inconsistent, i just ignored everyone at the club, cause the just made no sense to me. IF THAT BALL IS SPINNING IT WILL GO IN. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO TIME ON MY FOREHAND, BUT IM STILL TRYING IT.
though my english isn't good, I could understand most of your explaination. thanks dude! support ttEDGE from south korea :-)

Possibly the most instructive backhand training video I've seen yet.
I imagine stroking even further forward would produce more power, si?
Thanks
EDGQ1013 3 months ago
@EDGQ1013 Hi, I'm not completely sure what you mean by stroking forward? Having the follow through going more forwards?
tabletennisedge 1 month ago
@tabletennisedge By stroking further forward I mean a slightly more lunging effort in the
direction of your intended precise target on the other side. It would probably
result in your right shoulder pointed more forward in that same direction
at the final phase of the stroke, rather than it remaining stationary
and EVEN with the other shoulder or square to the table. Might that not
give more forward uumph! to the ball?

I wanna thank you for this video.
Its been my struggle to master this technique for quite some time until i found this video of yours. The common mistakes part is just stunning.
After analyzing the technique given in this video, i could master the backhand topspin in matter of minutes.
Once again thank you for the video and i hope ttedge.com could be accessed real soon. God Bless.
