Hi Denise and Dan, What about VERY CLOUDY conditions? Unlike you, a lot of us I live where the weather is very often rainy and windy. I use. I realise the area of collection may have to be relatively large - I'm curious to know HOW large, and how practical it would be, using silver paper reflectors and my two large fresnel lenses, to wean myself off gas and electricity. Gratefujl if you can help. It could change the global public attitude to solar cooking. Bruce Thomson in New Zealand.
Great for making campfire-made Krispy Kremes! =) Really appreciate the safety tip at the end. The slow motion really burned it into our minds and thankfully not because our bodies got burned!
Wasn't that smoke coming off the cook surface when you re-directed the light source? Would seem that you'd better not let your arm or hands get under that sunbeam... yowser!
Give me a good old "dutch oven" over hot coals any day. (It's what the American pioneers used.)
Good idea and video. It would be nice to see a mirror reflect the lightbeam onto the bottom of the pan also. I guess it might be better cooking if it works, but slightly more dangerous to the user, so I guess some safter measure would havea to be thought up.
Hey "demofish" and "airguitarfooker" - Those are both GREAT modfications to this project. A Venetian Blind arrangement on the Fresnel lense is a simple "Off-The-Shelf" solution for temperature control. The "Morror Reflector" is also good as the heat is applied to the bottom of the pan and you are now coooking in a conventional fashion only "GREEN" . Also the mirror will not break or melt reflecting the sunlight.
I bet it was. I wasnt in the boy scouts although I roll my t-shirts boy scout style only to save space and it looks neater. It's so fun cooking with the sun, especially if you dont need to pay to use it. (E.g. gas or electric).
Why dont reflect the sunlight to a mirror or something UNDER the frying-pan...that shoots up the heat to something that are keeping the heat good, making it like a "hot owen plate"...? Sry for bad english, im retarded...

After thinking it over, I'm wondering if it might be better to focus the beam below the cooking surface and then reflect it up to the bottom of the cooking surface. The "stove" could be a 3-sided box with a swiveling mirror in the bottom. I think this arrangement would help protect against eye damage and exposure from reflected radiation you might get from focusing the beam on the upper surface.

That hot steam/oil mix at the end is also very flamable/practically "combustable" when the heat/ignitionn source is still being used. The flames would be several feet high. So never try to put out an oil fire with water, use a lid if you have it, or special fire extinguisher that can be used on oil.
wow i never thought of transfering the sun energy to a pan and cooking........i think im gonna have to look into building a solar stove. great video thanks for the killer ideas now in my head..
Excellent, very unfair to stove manufactures and electricity supply companies. Those poor corporations will need to get the government to impliment regulations regarding the sun. Cheers.

anybody know if its possible to heat the pan using heat conduction threw some sort of aluminum or copper rods or plates or some shape so you don't have to have direct sunlight to keep something heated? possibly even control heat energy enough for slow cook?
@eonomen YOu could possibly use copper rods as a heat conductor and run it through something with really good heat retention. Maybe ceramic, clay, brick, cast iron...I dunno
Or perhaps you can use mylar or something to reflect the beam so it goes under the pan
Great job Denise and Dan way better temp control this time. Nice to see some very practical uses of simple almost free solar tech. Makes me want to fabricate a lens mirror combo with adjustable pan stand for heat from below and controllable temp. Never use the stove on a sunny day again !!!
Dan please get a thick piece of steele where one side is full power the other set the pan on I bet it would be perfect. That way you don't have to move the lenz and anytime you want to cook you have an already hot griddle. You could do one better and season the piece of steele just like they do with cast iron pans.
Ever get any fiber optic they can be aimed at the base of that piece of metal and it would have heating upper and lower.
can someone tell me what she said right at the beginning of this video?? .. it was her name but before that there was anything but cuz im german i dont understand .. pls if there is anybody willing to help me, just write me privat massage!!!!!!
i wonder how much oil is in that pan cuz everything seems to be swimming in it, useing solar power is awesome but u should watch ur cholesterol lol

Also what about parts? Can an 8" mirror be used?
