Standard poodles are extremely loyal and loving to their owners. When I would get home from work or school my standard would grab my hand in his mouth (gently) and walk with me wagging his tail like mad. He'd do the same with all the family. If we all came in at once he'd grab one of his toys or a shoe and do the tail wagging thing. What about bull terriers too? And Great Pyrenees? Both very loyal breeds in my experience.

Akita's should be #1 on this list. They will live and die by there owners. I had a German Shepard (beautiful dog) but nothing like my Akita.

When my Akita was in the hospital they needed to send him back home because he refused to eat or be touched by any of the nurses, they never send dogs home so soon after a serious operation but they had no choice with my Akita & they (the nurses) could not believe his loyalty. Hachiko is not just a movie, he describes the loyalty of an Akita beautifully.

I currently have a Weimaraner and Rough Collie and I have to agree that my Collie is extremely loyal, he doesnt like to do anything with other people if I am around, even my kids! Collies need LOTS of attention, exersize and training. Much more than the standard dog owner is able to give. Otherwise they WILL bite and destroy. In my years of Dog training I have been bit by this breed more often than any other with the most damage accuring. *Note I do work with special needs cases and rehabilitation. Not one resucued pitbull/stafford. 'fighter' has ever bitten me.
