  • thanks for the tips, i will try them out, 1 question though , by "film look" do u mean like a more professional looking video?

  • Generally, yes. "Professional looking video" is more an expression of production VALUE. The essential question of production Value is: 'Does it Look like you spent Time/Money to make it?' There is no "film look" for shooting on film stocks. They ARE the film look.

  • o ok i get it haha thank you

  • How do you record at 16:9 on a digital camera?

  • hmmm? poor mans way is to take masking tape and tape the aspect ratio (the ratio is length to height of the viewfinder, 16 units to 9 units) so all you can see is that frame of view. then in editing, crop the excess that the camera recorded. If money is no problem, just buy a camera with 16:9.

  • Buy something good

  • @session036 he's talking about widescreen and not all cameras are capable of widescreen.

  • Check out my attempt in the video responses. To further help with a "film" look, you need to manipulate the flicker of the image (The projector look), some gate wobble (sise-to-side movement) crush your dark colors, create a vignette, and diffuse the mid tones. easy!

  • That's some fine work in creating the look and feel of film. Thanks for those tips too.

  • nice shirt

  • I am just wondering if playing around with the shutter speed would help with getting that film look? Also, if you slow down the video, wouldn't the audio be distorted?

  • Shutters on video camera are NOT mechanical. Its applied by the computer in the camera. Reducing the shutter speed (also shutter angle) would create a motion blur effect that would have a resemblance to film but as soon as the subject(s) a)stopped moving or they b)moved too fast, the effect would be a)lost because there is no motion to blur or b)too blurry because items are moving too fast.

Yes, audio is distorted (read description) b/c pitch and tempo are directly related.

  • OK with the letterboxing.

For the DOF effect, you should better move the camcorder back and zoom in. This will give you the DOF effect you want.

I don't believe in the "slow down". Better play with the shutter to give the film effect.

Also in post production playing with contrast, saturation and color balance will help alot.

    My two cents ...

  • thanks for that. selective focus was a big breakthrough for me, thats why they have cinematographer and camera men, etc. only just realized thats what you cant do with video. maybe theres a way to do it true

  • See my vids on my GoldenZah Channel about 35mm lens adapters for video cameras. Or search for 'Red Rock M2', 'Letus', 'Brevis' or 'P+S Technik'.

  • Why add DoF? Most cameras, even digital, are able to produce DoF when recording.

  • selective DOF is a signature mark of high end lenses. The shown technique is created in editing. Why add it? For the effect.

I challenge you to show me a stock video camera under $10000 USD that can adequately reproduce selective depth of field, similar to 8, 16, 35 or 65mm film camera with prime lenses.

  • Not to challenge your opinion, but how about 35mm lens adapters? Would they be able to reproduce selective DoF?

  • go to my goldenzah channel for Red Rock M2 info

  • Nice job. I agree with the letterboxing, and I'm a little confused by the slowed-down sound (seemed to make your lips look out of sync, more than anything). And how does the blur help if there's no depth map for the blur filter to read?

  • love this video, ill make mine and put a response!

  • Wow)) you think like me)))

    that's all i do)(with video)

please take a look my video.

but you forgot about color and sound )

  • BTW, my shirt is MELON colored. Guess who did not white balance?

  • Um... was it you? :S

    lol :D

  • it was my evil twin, BurnToast.
