@tracym139 I don't know the original rationale, but it's probably because it's a cost saver and simplifies meet setups (we tear down our practice gyms and set up the equipment in the main/b-ball gym). Guys don't really need a full 40x40. The tumbling strip is the same length as a 40x40 diagonal (64 feet?), but a lot easier to set up.
The school I was coaching at last year doesn't have girls' competitions in the main gym; it's just too much trouble to move the whole 40x40 floor back and forth.
