  • WHAT THE..?

  • Great video man!! Keep on sheddin'!!!

  • Killer groove, man!

  • what cymbals have you got stacked on your right?

  • @allmetaliswelcome They are Zildjian Oriental Trash Hats which I've had from new and were sold as a pair. As far as I know these are no longer available although you may find them second hand.

The bottom cymbal is a 14" China and a 12" heavy top cymbal. They were also available in a 16/14 combination but I've not seen or heard any.

Hope that helps. All the best, Darren

  • Killer solo! Love the touch, dynamics, composition and drum sound. Oftentimes when I hear linear solos, it sounds like a collection of licks rather than a statement. Really dig what you've done here. Thanks for sharing!

  • thanks for sharing :D

  • very good

  • Thank you. By sharing your work. Merry Christmas!

  • Fabulous sounding kit as well as drumming.

  • What are you doing?

You're hitting toms randomly with style but no rhythm.

If you're going to teach, step up your game.

  • @Jirinoshi If you don't get it, you don't have to watch his videos, and you certainly don't have to comment. There's no need to be so uninformed and critical.

  • @tywatson92 Facepalm...just....no.

  • Nice job. Would you believe a I have almost the same kit. Pearl Masterworks, everything is birch, same sizes. Colour is purple to black fade with black rims. I plan on putting up some clips in the new year, and hopefully get some feedback on my playing. Keep it up!

  • You play with such clarity!! I love it

  • Tight

  • You gave me a boner.

  • the only advice i have is while ur playing linear, i understand u meant for this to be a "solo" type structure, but linear still needs to be musical and phrase, and still have certain accents that enlist a groove is there.

  • Awesome.

  • Feels like a good approach. I will watch more. Your touch reminds me of Levon Helm from the Band. I found some old session tapes on YouTube of the group recording at Woodstock Studios around 1970. Helm works a lot with his right hand, almost fluttering, while controlling subtle dynamics with his left. Very smooth and engaging.

  • very nice

  • Enjoyable stuff indeed! Cool touch!

  • honestly.. it prolly sounds terribly without mics

  • is this 100% linear? thats crazy!

  • @remurdereht Not all but most.

  • nice solo...and i love how your toms sound...do you have any tips on drum tuning?

  • @swankyification Check out Dave Weckl's method which I find helps alot. Having a consistent tuning method is the best way or at least one you can test. All drums are different and need slightly different tweaks. If it sounds good to you then it is!

    Hope that helps, Darren

  • Hello, it is your cool improvisation on drums !!!! ... it makes you want to do Rock ! Good luck, Darren :) Thumbs up for your performance, man !

  • Siiiick!! Lovin the vids Daz!

  • Very nice mate

  • hella smooth. nice vid. :)

  • Which heads are those? I can see that it's Remo.

  • @bertram7074 That's right, all the heads are Remo.

    Kick: Clear Powerstroke 3

Toms: Clear Emperors on the batter side of the toms, Clear Ambassadors on the resonant side.

Snare: Coated ambassador on the batter head and a Clear Ambassador on the snare side.

Hope that helps. All the best, Daz.

  • @DrumLessonAcademy Helped alot. Just made my choice ten times easier. Btw which kit is this? And the front BD head? Thanks in advance.

  • @bertram7074 Sorry, I should have said! It's a Pearl Masterworks Kit, maple bass drum and birch toms. Sizes 22"x16", 10"x8, 12"x9" & 14"x10. Pearl Sensitone brass snare drum 14"x 5. The front bass drum head is a remo powerstroke 3 Pearl logo head. Best of luck, Daz

  • @DrumLessonAcademy They sound superb. Congratz with them! My toms are birch too, do you recommend clear emps for them? I see you use them.

  • Love this type of drumming !!!

  • I suck at this.... A little practice will help maybe?

  • @BornAWinner11 Practice makes always makes improvement!

  • He's good

  • starting at 1:26 can u give me some sticking? i saw alot of doubles with your hands but i couldnt make it out

  • @TFSmash Yeah, it's mainly R L F but with some subdivisions thrown in, such as RR L F or RR LL F.

Check out the lesson for more in depth info.

Hope that helps, all the best. Daz.

  • this is sick

most of the solo is linear and is really smooth

    nice job bro

  • Thanks for sending the vid, real good playing!

What mixer do use to put your mics through??

    thanks

  • @tisBenG I process the audio through a MOTU 896mk3 sound card unit before it hits the mac. All EQ and effects are added inside Logic. I use a combination of Waves and Logic effiects. I would love to put all the mics through an analogue mixer first but I'll have to save up for that one! Thanks for the comment. All the best, Daz

  • Thanks for sending me the link to this!

    Kick: Beta 52

    Snare: SM57

    Toms: Beta 98 amp/c

    Overheads: Beta 27

    Hope this helps.

    Daz

  • thks dude is help me. love it

  • nice!! :)

  • very good, that is some good improvising there, could you give me a few tips?

    cheers :-)

  • @aliens563 Listening to a lot of good improvisors (not just drummers) always helps. Some of the drummers that I listen to for this are: Steve Gadd, Joe Morello, Max Roach, Kenny Clare & Steve Smith among others. The music of Quincey Jones is worth a listen for a variety of different musical devices in the arrangements: question and answer, phrasing and contrasting musical elements such as dynamics, tonality, subdivisions & note density. Check out the album The Dude. Hope that helps.

  • @DrumLessonAcademy Thanks so much, very helpful :-)

    Ill definitely check them out!

  • this is good really good awsome outstanding cool

  • Great musical video!

  • thanks

  • this is awesome...

but, how can i do that ? :P

  • Very nice! I'm 15 years old. What do I have to practise most to get to your level?

  • @schaatsgek My most intense practice time was from the age of 15 to 24. I'm now 38.

I practiced every day and included reading/writing music, styles (Jazz, Funk, Rock, Country, Afro Cuban, Brazilian etc.), phrased based concepts, linear playing, and lots and lots of listening.

Check out my '5 sure fire way to improve your drumming' which you can get by signing up to my FREE email newsletter available at the Drum Lesson Academy website (see the video notes for the link).

    All the best, Darren

  • awesome!!!

  • Great sound, and sweet dynamics!

  • Very nice mate :)

  • excellent

  • I am indeed. I first started playing and practicing the concepts I've out lined in the lesson when I was 15 (23 years ago!). My 23 years of studying and playing music has also helped me to improvise around a musical idea or concept such as this.

Glad you like it and thanks for the comment.

  • This is pretty cool. Are you just improvising as you go along?
