I get my own interpretations out of Tool's music and am just fine with not knowing what their exact intent was.
This is my fav of theirs because I can zone in on each of the instruments (vocals, bass line, melody, drum rhythm) and hear that they individually are playing their own beautiful melodic song that I could keep focusing on and it holds up on its own. It seems the two most common interpretations are it's about his son devo h Keenan or heroin.
I can see how both could be right but I have heard rumors that this song was written before devo was born and others that Maynard stated on stage that this was about his family.
I like to think it's about devo because prison sex is one of the deepest songs ever; This song would just add even more meaning to the abuse cycle shown in prison sex.

from my junky's view, this is all about Heroin, the foolishness in what we addicts do, the indifference, the self-hate and brittle hope. The 'snake" is what the addiction and how it tears us apart, be it sex, gambling, food, smack or whatever that drags you down into a hole that is horrible but so normal that it's comforting

@downwithjedward I guess its really hard to actually determine what a song in particular is about, it could be about his son and Heroin as well. or it could be about ham sandwiches. It doesn't matter what anyone else's perception of this song is, How you interpret it is what matters. But from what i know from experience is that heroin is a highly addictive drug, "days away" from using heroin you can still feel its hold on you.

This song is about Maynards's son. His middle name is the letter H. It's about how Maynard was abused as a child and how it's human nature to want to repeat the cycle unto another but that he resists because he is stronger and smarter than his step father. It's all about refusing to give in to evil impulses that will turn out to haunt you once they've been committed.

@joebobstevemcfrank this song is about DMT or ayahuasca AKA Hoasca, its about killing the ego and being reborn into a humble perspective, there is mention of Devo in there but it is very common to ask the vine on how to be a better person and ones family comes up, "days away, still feel you..." is the afterglow of ayahuasca and how all the visions start to make sense, your walls of reality come down to see life in a different light.

I have read a lot of peoples thoughts on this song.
It seems the two most common interpretations are it's about his son devo h Keenan or heroin.
I can see how both could be right but I have heard rumors that this song was written before devo was born and others that Maynard stated on stage that this was about his family.
I like to think it's about devo because prison sex is one of the deepest songs ever; This song would just add even more meaning to the abuse cycle shown in prison sex.
