Actually Pandit Nikhil Banerjee himself even said people are confused and incorrent when they think Indian Classical music is religious. It is spiritual. There is a big difference and one who truly understands the music should be able to see that. He also talks about great western players coming up in the sitar world at the time. Hindustani music is not just limited to Hindu people. Many sitar masters are muslim you know? Its not religious and the power of the music lies dormat within us all.
Hey man, I'm from Glasgow and just got a sitar for Christmas two days ago. I've figured out the basics, major/minor scales, etc, and a couple of western tunes like Norwegian Wood, Paint it Black...
What stuff would you recommend that's simple enough and is a good starting block?
It's always best to have a teacher to learn properly. To ensure your basic technique/posture is correct and also for the Raga system which is very different from western music.

raaga is not just music it is faith and religion for the hindustani people.
you are good for a person for whom Raag is not a form a god.
