His parents are stupid for not putting all these great songs on the posthumous album just because they're of "dark" nature.... But that's what makes them so great.
@heyjude97 well, we can look for light in the darkness. The song comes from a very dark place that maybe some who has not experienced what he did will not get. Yeah, it may bring some light into your life. But that light has to come out of darkness. It is like the "one can not experience true pleasure if they have not experienced true pain". This song speaks to that if you take the time to hear it, not just listen to it.
@staphinfection Elliott himself said he was originally going to trash these songs, and still wanted to. They probably just knew him well enough to honor what he might have preferred.
i think that if somebody had made this song before him, or any of his songs, he would still have been able to improve them because of this distinctive voice. it is very beautiful, and different... which i guess is what makes it so beautiful
this song would have fit in on basement on the hill so well!!! god i love this song, and this is such an amazing version, i love his background vocals in this song!!! XO
a fond farewell, kings crossing, ostriches & chirping, and twilight, that is my all time favorite line up of songs, i totally love listening to em all in a row, and i couldn't agree with u any more that true love would have been perfect right after twilight!!! RIP ELLIOTT SMITH, U WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN OR REPLACED XO
From first hand experience, I can say that lyric perfectly illustrates how addicts and mentally ill people in the grips of hopelessness feel about being institutionalized. They only feel safe when they are stripped of the freedom to destroy themselves.
wow i never heard the studio version of this song, and wow how awesome it is, i always loved this song, but the studio version is awesome elliott u are pure genius!!! miss u man!!! XO
I am not sure if there is or not, I just have it downloaded..... I have a whole whack of unreleased and live stuff from him, and access to alot more... I am always looking to add new stuff, but most of it is on here... and I only things that either a)are not here already, or b)are here, but in poor quality...
Wow, his use of metaphors is amazing...there's so many things he could be talking about. At first I thought it was just heroine, but it sounds like he's talking about a lot more.
yeah, for sure... i believe the song deals with addicition in general though, not just heroin... can be applied to nearly anything... this is one of the songs originally slated to appear on "from a basement...", but was pulled off by the family who thought it was too personal.
it deft. is one of his most personal songs, i agree...
the other one that was supposed to be on there was suicide machine, but the family didnt want that on there, and were angered when the track leaked.
He looks dead in that picture.

@staphinfection I like to think of Elliott's music as very light music. There's nothing I see that's dark about it. I hate the term 'dark.' :)

there will never be any other. He was and is the voice of a generation, although i think he'd probably hate the idea of being so.

there is a better version out there, where the vocals sync up

i like this version... the double tracked vocals give it a feeling of a duo personality, it fits this song very well.
but wouldnt mind hearing the other.

love this song beautifully dark like olny elliott can do.
and the words contain so much, there is the obvious themes of addiction but it is used as more of a literary device to describe codependency.

Is there a place where we can find the Grand Mal compilation? I'm always interested in listening to unheard tracks by Elliott.
