I would say to all actual baritones, especially to the young ones....do not thin out too much by diminishing support, on the contrary, anchor instead every tone two hands below your navel. Like Herlea is doing it. Deep down your body! Maintain the bari- tone! Bari meaning dark! Bravo once again to Herlea, of course!
Such beautiful music, such art! and such a nasty story! Verdi seemed to specialize in passion vs duty conflicts, and took pains to show all the players' little motivations. Who's the weakest link, the king who had such an eclipsing father, the Princess Elizabeth, a slave to duty, Eboli, who *will* be queen, or young Hamlet, er, Carlos? The Church strides through it all, pollardng, heading off and burning as if there had never been a Teutoberg. Posa has a thankless job to do - for Flanders?
Thank you for posting this recording. I love how YouTube members share the work of lesser known artists with the community. Herlea is a great Verdi baritone with whom I was not familiar. I am excited to learn more about him and his recordings.
Nicolea Herlea is a true "Verdi Baritone" on of the century and one to remember this voice qualification is sometimes lost on those who call themselves opera afficionados. He had the size, color, depth, and range of a true Verdian baritone, a great singer and truly a baritone thought and through, one must remember that a baritone does not mean "thomas hampson" or "boje skovhous"
as some romanians say: winter is not summer.... and a baritone is not a tenor.... let Herlea be the unique bariton he is (even if his teacher was a great tenor!).... by the way: this so called tenor (spinto!?) started his professional training as basso cantabile....
I have been hearing Herlea since childhood and never heard him singing like a tenor neither live nor on record. One of the greatest baritones of alll time. And a good actor, I agree.
I used to hear it exactly the way "bnoyan" feels. However, I think it's not the case. His voice matured, darkened and deepened with years. As for dramatizm, he always tended to it. He was a greater actor than a singer. There are no more like him anymore.
really? Are you absolutely sure...because he had magnificent voice but lacked a bit of edge when it came to acting and choosing his repertoire...kept always really safe. Don;t get me wrong, with a voice like this you can't blame him, but I just hate people making irrational statements for sentimental reasons
great baritone! but i know his voice well. he has a higher voice than he sounds. almost a tenor's voice. he darkens it artificially and widens his vibratos to sound more dramatic. he sings great though. viva Herlea.
I agree totally. ..this fellow could have had a marvelous career as a spinto tenor. . . the weakest part of his voice is the low. ..the middle and top are awesome
A spinto tenor? hahahahahhahaha.....are you sure you've listened to enough herlea? or.. enough opera in general? I mean that's bullocks!! Are you also one of those people who think Bocelli can sing?
Herlea had all the notes where they should be and a legato to die for!He had his flaws but not actually being a baritone is not one of them
Thank you for replying to my comment because otherwise I never would have known that it was made as I did not make it. Herlea is a marvelous BARITONE. It seems someone has obtained access to my account and is making silly statements on YouTuse using it. I am sorry for any confusion and will change my passcode. Boceelli? EH !
some ppl dopnt understand some jokes... ok.... fact is that Herlea started as basso cantabile and his teacher (a great heroical tenor between the two world wars - STROIESCU) "worked out" his voice to baritone...anyway it was an will remain as one of the most beautifull and fascinating verdian voice.... amen!

Absolutely amazing-he makes this, one of the most tricky arias, sound like a beautiful walk in a lovely park!
What a voice!!! Which four 'experts' clicked dislike???? The way he approaches the top is even more impressive than the top itself!

best high notes ever:
bass: sam ramey
baritone: nicolae herlea
tenor: franco corelli (no competition here)
contralto/mezzo: Cecilia Bartoli
Soprano: Edda Moser or Birgit Nilson
*that's my opinion at least, let me know what you think ;P

Herlea is one of the most true, real baritones between all of them,in his generation, and after...
his voice has the flower of perfection...a powerful mixture of bloody sensuality, exquisite sweetness, and a dark shade that makes it irresistible!
