She does not look like anne. if you one to see a version of this with a person that looks exactly like her. Type Anne frank the whole story in your search bar.
@twistedyogert To a child, I suppose this may be so... kids have a messed up idea of what other's ages are. My daughter is 13 and Anne could be her twin, so I think this actress looks a lot like a young girl and also a lot like Anne did.
best of all the adaptations, saw it last night and the girl looks eerily similar to Anne. Highly recommended and this comes from somebody who never watches PBS.
Only thing i dont like about this is that every time they shoot an Anne Frank Video, the actress always has a british accent!! She was German for the love of Jews!!! But other than that it sounds like a really good movie. I just now head about it and made me so mad it was on sunday, darnet....
@MercPirate My local PBS station is repeating it this coming Sat. Go to their website to see if that is true for you. I think not every PBS station will repeat it, so watching it on their website is another possibility...if you live in the US :(
@laurentkilla Saw it last night too-- that part didn't creep me out really, but I did want to smack that lady! She "needed to go" at such a crucial time! She would of revealed the hideaway just to go take a freaking dump!
@xoanime94xo It is mentioned in Anne's diary that after the burglars had left, EVERYONE needed to go relieve themselves in the bathroom. By the time it was Anne's turn, the bathroom was very stinky. It just illustrates how terrifying that situation was.
@smilingpets I understand how terrifying the situation was (I read it too) but just the whole suspense in that scene, with that lady constantly trying to use the bathroom even though the burglars were there, she started to annoy me.
Fritz Pfeffer, the dentist who was in hiding with the Frank and van Pels families is referred to as Mr Dussell (translation: Mr. Nitwit). Since all other names of this group are used correctly, this is an affront to his memory. Dr. Pfeffer died in a concentration camp, unable to defend his name, now infamous thanks to Anne's diary.
@veewat Actually many, if not all, of the people Anne talked about in her diary were given pseudonyms. The van Pels were called van Daan, as you must have noticed on Sunday night.
@ketchuplittletomato You can watch it on PBS's website. Unfortunately, I can't b/c I don't live in the US. The upside is that the serial will re-air on Sat., Apr. 17. Check your local listings.
This Masterpiece Classic is worth buying on DVD :)
@smilingpets: I am aware hat Anne gave everyone pseudonyms, but this is not her diary, but a film, a recreation of events as they happened, using Anne's POV as the focal point. This version was kinder to Pfeffer, but still, Ann and the families would not have called Dr. Pfeffer, Mr. Dussell to his face. The text-over at the end gave the impression these were the real names. Pfeffer was a real person, just like Ann, he suffered and died just like Ann. His real name should be used somewhere.
@veewat This drama was based on Anne's diary so I understand how screenwriter Deborah Moggach wanted the script to be as true to the diary as possible. However, I will agree with you on the ending. There should have been a note stating the names were pseudonyms. It's misleading, esp. for viewers who are not familiar with the diary's background. Although it's sad that Moggach refers to Pfeffer as "Mr. Dussel" in an interview on PBS's website, she still did a great job as screenwriter.
@smilingpets : I decided to make this point wherever I could because it has been an odd oversight over the years. I knew Pfeffer was the dentist in the story, and annoyed to see 'Dussell' perpetuated. I agree Moggach did a great job bringing new light to the characters (and a fairer portrait), but I am surprised that she used "Dussell" as his only name, and again, as you mentioned, her interview. By luck of history, who would want to be forever known as "Mr. Nitwit"?
@veewat I suppose it is better for us to know that Fritz Pfeffer existed, rather than not at all. Through Anne's diary we can all remember he was one of the 6 million Jews who perished. Though Anne wrote she wanted to live on after her death, she was careless in not considering the implications of the pseudonym and how "Mr. Nitwit" will live on as well.
To be honest I had no idea "dussel" translated to "nitwit" in German until you pointed it out. Dussel sounds v. much like a proper name to me.
@smilingpets: Anne's story is indeed metaphorical for the loss of so many unnamed people. Fritz and 8 other family members died in the camps. Anne's frustration living in such cramped quarters is understandable, her diary has its own merit. However, I know the Pfeffer family were devastated by A's memorialization of him, an unfortunate consequence of the massive popularity of the novel. They spent years trying to rectify it. In adaptations, it's time to move beyond the confines of the diary.
How very, very sad. We just visited the House of Anne Frank on Boxing Day 2009. This movie is so accurate, especially when they were looking outside the windows toward the canal and the creaky stairs. Thanks PBS!!
