Even when I was a kid I could see the errors. I still loved it so much. I like when he's headed down the road with Mickey and are passing road signs. However it is painfully obvious that the signs are on tracks and being moved towards the camera.
It wasn't shot on purpose, it was a mistake on the VHS. Burton talks about it on the DVD commentary that fixes the mistake. I'm so used to it on the DVD, I kind of miss seeing it now!

@kobakommander yup I'm watching it on netflix now and had to search for this cause I always remember seeing the chains, it seems the widescreen version is cropped so the top and bottom are cut off.

Errrrr.... The chain feeding isn't an error. Its part of the joke! Lots of special effects in both the movies and TV series were done in such a way.

I'm guessing the movie was shot full screen and cropped for the theatrical version. Otherwise this scene wouldn't have been so obvious.
