My favourite motorcycling video on youtube. Straight lining those last 2 turns on an underpowered ducati was genius by Troy. And the 2 british commentators trying to keep a lid on their disappointment is hilarious.

I love how everyone is saying how to ride a bike, like they know better than bayliss or toseland... makes me laugh... unless it is V. Rossi talking then you all are fools. haha
you are an idiot, the only form of modifications to traction on an motor bike is abs system honda has. other then that its just torque from the chain and good ole fashion brakes. you cant honestly say it was an "attempt" those riders are professional level and know how to do a wheelie, if he wanted to he would have road it across the line. looked like he shifted to a different gear which causes a new amount of torque to be applied which pushed him up not a tug.
he definatly meant to do that and thats what lost the race, he lost so much speed right when he tried to wheelie, it even looks like he tried to clutch it up there too, watch his left hand
sorry zzoebl, I agree with the others, he knew Bayliss was right there with him and he's not dumb enough to pull a 'show-off' move in that tight a situation, especially when riding a bike with that big a sponsership... he's not going to risk that ride. The shifting was for weight redistribution, the bikes power pulled the wheel up, same as when he just exits the corner.
world superbikes just does not feel the same without bayliss, this year's battle between haga and speis you couldnot help but think where is bayliss, best worldsuperbike rider ever in my opinion, hope toseland does great next year :)
"he finish of the second race of Assen 2007. Look for JT's wheelie attempt which no one seems to mention; anywhere. I think that cost him the race. Look how he shifts his weight and gets ready for a celebration wheelie just as Bayliss comes past. "
That's None sense! It's a close battle, there's no wheelie to celebrate! He was pushing the bike. Happens all the time.
MTBSCOTS4EVA , notice how its was the drive of the bike that lifted the front wheel up because he ran into the corner too quickly and had to grab the throttle again.
doubt it or the bike would gradually lift up instead of the sudden pull, its just cos his body weight moves at the same time thats why i thought that but i suppose you could be right too
The Ducato 999 was fast enough and won championships against the 1000cc inline 4's, no need for Ducati to go to 1098, gives them an unfair advantage. Plus Ducati is the only factory bike with full factory support where as all the others have no factory or partial support. Basically it's privateers versus Ducati.
I went to the open paddock day and waited 2 hours for him at the Ducati pits..then i heard he fell of his bike and wouldnt come that day. Now im saving some money and hope i can go to the last race of the season in Portugal so i can see him one more time in action.
dont think he tryed to do a wheelie. toseland aint stupid. obviously he was ringing the neck outta his cbr as he knew bayliss was slap bang behind him, and im sure its not easy keeping the nose down on a 200bhp superbike.
I think he aborts the wheelie when he sees Bayliss' front wheel. JT wheelies way to late for it to be a power issue. Anyway, he's the only one who can deny or confirm.
that was the most beautiful finish i have ever seen, what a maniac, bayliss never gives up, jt has to known better...next year on the 1098 he will be back in world championship competition!!!! bayliss in front=daddy in front!!!!!
JT obviously tried a wheelie there, mciryan is talking shite when he says these bikes don't have traction control, nearly all WSB bikes have it now. And the wheelie wasn't caused by the power because JT was already out of the corner and already had the power down before he even tried to lift the front end up.
pulling on the bars was not to pull the bike into a wheelie. they are not pedal bikes. they wheelie souly based upon power at that speed. the pull on the bars was to bring his weight forward to keep the wheel down.
Look close at his shoulders on the slow motion front view, you can see the "tug" on the handlebars which also helps pull wheelies even on a motorbike.
these bikes do not have traction control. it was simply the front wheel coming up due to the power these bikes produce.
the reason you see his weight shift is because they sit across on the seat into the corners. when they come out of the corner they simply throw themselves back in the middle of the seat.
there is no way anyone in their right mind in that close position would try a celebration wheelie before the line in that circumstance.
If you see all the other laps he doesn't shift his weight like that, and it is an advantage to keep the weight on the inside to be able to have the bike more upright to get on a fatter part of the tire. Bayliss doesn't do it and that's why he won. That's my opinion at least.
@zzoebl yeah i saw that too but for me he didnt pull up, he knew that the ducati was allways gonna get him on initial accelleration out the corner and he just changed gear with high revs just desperately trying to hold troy off. and in doing that accidently 'popped' the clutch making the front wheel come up.
They have traction control and anti-wheelie devices now days. I'm pretty sure he thought it was in the bag and wanted to celebrate. You can clearly see it from behind (1:30) when he shifts his weight and the motion of his body; he's pulling on the bars. That's my analysis anyway.

stefypescara 3 years ago
At the end of the race I was happy and cried for Troy. I've never ever found such a great rider and person.
In Donnington he crashed and lost hal a finger, the following race he got the superpole and a podium. And in Assen did what we know.
