There was a band from the UK in the 80's called Japan. On their last record 'Tin Drum' Mick Karn is credited as playing the 'dida' which is I think another name for this instrument the suona. Am I right?
I'm so glad I finally found this! I live in Taiwan and heard/saw a temple procession with these instruments last night - so glad I found it here, thanks :)
It's difficult to find sheet music for suona because the music is usually passed down just by playing. You may be able to find some books on it though. I (the girl in the video) learned it from a teacher who taught by playing phrases and allowing me to memorize them.
my teacher showed me this clip today at school today. He said suona players are very well payed because good suona players are hard to find.A suona player can be payed up to $1000 per hour for at a funeral.I should stop studying and go learn how to play it...lol
Well, I wouldn't really agree : there's a much more closer equivalent in occident : the breton "bombarde" (don't know the english name) is also a double reed instrument tha blows your ears, like the suona. On a more anglo-sakon note : if you take the chanter of a bagpipe, you get something very near.
Wow Elise! When you told me that you play "a trumpet," I was imagining the more common Western kind of trumpet. I also didn't know that you were this good. Good job!
It sounds like chronic flatulence lol (:

Suona? What in the world is that?
mrmusicverse 7 months ago
@mrmusicverse It's like Chinese version of the trumpet.
VagueTheory 7 months ago
@mrmusicverse I like to think of it as a trumpet mixed with an oboe.

Me: Mom... I'm moving to China.
Mom: How come?
Me: Awesome Suona Instruments there.
Mom: But... It'll pay a fortune to move there and buy one of those instruments.
Me: I can make thousands though with help!
Mom: Take me with you!!!

Its a reed. Suona is played using double-reeds. Just like the western oboe or basoon. However, the Suona is equivalent to the western trumpet.
