their not trying to mimic the sound, they'll do that to any critter that their instinct says to "attack" that they cant get to. its actually a frustration thing, same as our "groans" when we get frustrated w/something.

The cat is intending to attract the birds...some of them (like my bobtail) Chitters when he sees them. It's an ancient tactic to bring them within pouncing range.
