Hi, I have an Asus Eee PC 900ha... I have the Sims 3 and an external CD drive; does anyone know if there is anyway I can upgrade my notebook to run the game? I have gathered that its small RAM is at least one problem... Thanks in advance for any advice!
@suracs For an Eee PC 900 series, the biggest problem is its integrated graphics. The GPU powering that thing is horribly slow for gaming. In other words, get a new laptop with dedicated/discrete graphics such as an NVIDIA 540, 550, 555, or better.
@txprodigy95 Unfortunately the 701 series has a soldered-on SSD. It doesn't even include a mini PCI-Express slot to add a second one like the 900 series and later. Sorry. :-(
If by going to you mean from 512MB to 2GB, then yes, absolutely. From 1GB to 2GB, then not so much unless you're running memory-intensive applications (ie: photo/video editing apps, games, etc.). If you have the applications to make use of 2GB, then always yes.
@ciphernemo Going from 1 to 2GB should also allow a user to run more apps simultaneously with better responsiveness. If a user is running windows with several applications with moderate memory footprints, (such as a browser, a heavy email client like Outlook, Word, Adobe Reader, etc...) More memory can prevent the the laptop going to disk for memory purposes. However, if the limiting factor is primarily processor speed, then the user will not see a significant speedup with a memory upgrade.
Thanks, the upgrade is then definitely relevant. I am running Audacity and doing editing. If I thought I could get away with overclocking, I'd try that as well.
aye man tell me something. do you think its a good idea to upgrade the memory even before you use it. say like i just got it and i wanna upgrade the memory. should i boot it up first and intall all the programs it has to install since its brand new.
It's probably not going to matter either way. But it's a good idea to test the system first before you upgrade the memory to make sure you have no existing issues.
Unfortunately, the 701 series does not have a slot for a second SSD. Only the 900 series and later have support for a second SSD (through a Mini PCI Express slot). Many series, including the 701, have primary SSDs soldered to the system board.
Either 2GB or 4GB would be the limit for older Asus Eee PCs. They can vary from model to model and your manual (or pdf from their site) should tell you what the limit is for each model.
i bought a disney netpal asus is has a DDR2 So_DIMM 1GB but i want to change it to a 2GB would that be possible? the way you show it? what brand would you say is preferable for this asus?
The pre-installed distro of Linux (ie: Xandros with Eee PC application launcher) will need to have its kernel re-built to support 2GB and more. This process is much more simple than it sounds, but for those not comfortable with command-line Linux may find this daunting. I'd suggest a Google search on the topic that specifically applies to your Asus Eee PC model. Otherwise you can always install Linux or Windows from scratch and you'd be fine.
Unfortunately, and as far as I'm aware, no. Asus didn't specify within their models which have different system board revisions. Asus only knows this through their serial number ranges.
oh, thanks for the reply....yesterday night, I took the courage to just unscrew the bottom of my eeepc 701, and I realized that it has that two "thing"s at the side that secures the ram. So I believe my ram can be taken out like What I see in most of the videos. Haha, now I only need to figure out how to get rid of Linux and install XP, then I will add a 2 gig ram. Next, I will buy those DIY touch screen set and fix it in. Then I will be very happy! Hehe...
use a usb CD-ROM or a USB to IDE cable (20USD inc. PSU) and remove the your desktop CD-ROM drive and install as you would on a desktop. Don't forget to set the bios to boot from USB !!
I have one without the back panel and it does have any expansions slot BUT you have to completely take apart the bottom half of the laptop...remove the MB to upgrade it. I upgraded from 512Mb to 2Gb and installed tiny XP set graphics to 128Mb and ran Google Earth top speed high res...v nice!
Instructional video, nice work. Nice to take out from your time and help others who are computer illiterate.
I do believe the spirit of one who is self sufficiant when it comes to learning how to fix their own computers. cars, etc. obtain more self confidence and are eager to promote their knowledge to others, also redirecting good karma in the circle of life.
More and faster memory improves performance in some situations, but it isn't a speed boosting upgrade. It's a capacity boosting upgrade. Windows XP and Linux doesn't run any faster with 2GB compared to 1GB. However, applications that use more memory will see a difference in performance.
Upgrading your RAM above 1GB may only help if you're using memory intensive applications in Windows XP or any flavor of Linux. It will also help reduce the need to use a paging/swap file in most operating systems.
Nope, your warranty is still valid after upgrading the memory. Asus originally didn't want anyone upgrading the memory on earlier models, and therefore had the RAM chips soldered to the board. However, with the 701, 900, 1000 series and beyond, they retracted that and allow memory upgrades without voiding the warranty.
this has nothing to do with your vid but i just wanted to ask u a question.. i have got a new pc and i installed a 11 g game to it .. i unstalled it but i got my 11 g back then my pc randomly pput 11 g back wats going ..lol soz if that all seems a bit of a mess wat i just wrote
i have read somewhere that after replacing the 2gb, you can boot it up and keep pressing F2 and and then on bios you can select to recognize the new ram. then it will show the full memory. have you ever tried this?
Dude, thanks very much - very helpful. I didn't know I could use ordinary laptop memory for this. I heard somewhere it had to be special for the Eee PC. Thanks for clearing that up :)
BTW I am using Ubuntu 8.04 on my Eee 701 4G Surf - will that recognise 2GB straight off?
Good DIY.. very informative... and great 411 update on the Xandros max support for 1GB.. most people don't know that the kernel needs to be updated for the 2GB support (by most people I mean new Linux users)
Excellent video I am updating my Asus and watched it a couple of times . I am only a novice and have only installed memory a couple of times. I have a question, seems to me I read that once you remove the battery you should press the power button to make sure the power is all drained. Is this necessary on a laptop ? Again Thank You foe a great video
To get it to use 2GB, either recompile the kernel (or copy over a kernel someone else already recompiled), or install another operating system. Google for it, and you'll find a few guides out there.
yxesee, actually the fan white-noise you hear in the background is my A/C + my Air Purifier. The cheap Samsung camera I used to record this picked up that noise far too much. As for my PC, it's very quiet. I probably should have turned off the A/C and Air Purifier to record this. Sorry about that.
Im getting my asus on wed, im going to get the 2gb upgrade. would this be good? Corsair 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz SODIMM Memory, whats the model number on ur corsair im gonna go to tiger direct to get it,they price it on the site for 50.00$ is that good price?
The one I got was a Corsair ValueSelect 2GB 200-Pin DDR2 SO-DIMM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) Laptop Memory Model, Corsair #: VS2GSDS667D2. The one you listed should be fine. I bought mine through Newegg.

Does going to 2 GB of memory substantially improve the performance, assuming you are running on OS that will recognize the additional RAM?

I have an Asus Eee PC which I guess its RAM is 1 GB. I wonder how I can figure out what kind of memory to buy to upgrade it to 2 GB.
I also wonder, after upgrading, if I am supposed to change or modify some applications or program files on its Linux system.
Could some body help me with it?
Thanks

You might have an older model where the memory is soldered to the board and there is no expansion slot.
