Although I agree that standards are slipping and spelling mistakes and bad grammer are all to common, some abbreviations, such as lol, may well be language evolving, which, in my opinion, is a good thing. In Shakespeare's day, there were only around 100,000 words, he himself created about 1,700, today there are almost 1,000,000. I think the rate of creation stands at approximately 14 per day and the millionth is therefore expected within the next couple of months (I forget the exact date).
