I wish my husband would have liked Shelties. He liked great big mastiffs and bought two of them, both of whom slept at the bottom of the stairs. Maybe they thought they were protecting us from potential intruders.

Anyway, I went to the kitchen in the middle of the night to get some water, and I accidentally stepped on them. Believe me, it wasn't on purpose.

I didn't like dogs until I met 3 shelties, who are pretty good dogs.

I didn't know dogs could be so well-behaved until I met Mojo, Mongo and Dingo.

Don't ask; I have no idea why they named them that. But, since the owners are also my supervisors, I've never asked how they chose those names.

I lost my dear sheltie "Maxine" on July 12, 2010. She suffered a stroke and the vet felt it best to let her go as she would not improve. She was born on Jan. 15th, 1999. I know I'm going to miss her terribly for a long time to come.

I know how you feel after losing a dog from illness. Before Cocoa, I had a maltese who had a brain tumour and suffered all her life, and was put down by the vet when she was 4 years old. Your Maxine has had a good long life, and she will always be with you in your heart.

@dmclucas i also know the pain of losing a Sheltie, her name was Penny and she died on the 5th of May in 2009 from a huge amount of force on her lower back area like a tree branch hit her there and she later died in the vets office without me being their to comfort her to the very end

I hope you never forget her but hopefully there will be another puppy in your life to make you feel better

yeah the stuffed toy was his motivation. We stopped doing the treadmill as I was worried the treadmill was too hard on his joints. He is 10 years old, so it is better to run on soft grass.

Looks like my dog Taffy that died back in 1996. She was a miniature collie mix. We had her from 1981-96 and she died of old age(for 15yrs) but she was cool as hell like that dog.

What a cute fur kid you have. Nice toy/play reward at the end, and I'm so glad you show the importance of a good drink. Nice job! I hope you don't mind: I have a suggestion, try running her a little slower (allowing her muscles to stretch and build strength), and build duration. Also this is easier on her joints as she gets into condition. Doing a slow warm up and cool down is important to muscles. Also please trim her nails weekly so there's no tippy-toeing on the tiles. Great Job!

Yeah, the vet said he was a bit overweight, also other sheltie owners thought he was a bit chubby.

We got Cocoa to run by letting him walk on the treadmill at first with a lead, then later increased the speed.

Hi, my sheltie wasn't too interested in the treadmill at first. You need to introduce him to it slowly and provide treats to make it a pleasant experience. Standing on the treadmill also helps him feel more secure when he first gets on.

Those posters are kind of inspirational. It was filmed to get people to sponsor us on a walk to raise money for diabetes. We sent the link to this video to get people excited about raising money. Cocoa raised over A$800 and got recognised in the Walk against Diabetes Hall of Fame. He got a sapphire badge for his good work!

Wow, I've never seen a sheltie go so fast on a treadmill! Shelties can be difficult to keep weight off of, so this is great that he is getting such good exercise. Sorry to hear about your scare with another dog, hope you can find a nice safe place to walk him.

My sister takes him out walking, she has no fear of other dogs. I used walk Cocoa, but I am too scared after being chased down by some sort of bull terrier last year. I hope to take him out walking again. Right now I'm only brave enough to take him out to the training park where there are well behaved dogs.

This is his real speed. You can see his progress from the walking stage to the running and galloping stages! He started off walking on it at around 2km/hr speed, then he got up to around 8km/hr speed, now he likes to do a jog at about 6km/hr usually.

That's not running. You'll know a sheltie is running when they do more of a hopping motion. I used to love bringing my sheltie Hamish to my grandparent's house because they had a huge yard (used to be a farm). They can run much faster than people can.
