It's useless to practice on a dummy. Drawing on a dummy will never be like drawing on a real person. It was her first time and I can imagine how nervous you must have been. Just remember that you take off the tourniquet before you pull out the needle :)
ok, to all the other people please be quiet!! I think you did good for your 1st time practice makes perfect, you learn as you go. congrads, you got it!!
MsGymnast77,For fear of needles you have to take it step by step,I should know because my body is used to needles, because when I was a baby & a young boy my mom always gave me a shot on my butt,& that's how my body got used to needles!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@MsGymnast77 Hey sorry this is such a late reply! I'm never on this account anymore. I guess you just have to realize there isn't much pain, and that it's not going to hurt long, more of a pinch than anything.
Dude. Lighten up. First time.. a bit nervous. But, a successful first attempt. I'm sure if she were with a real patient... she wouldn't be goofing around like that.
@MsGypsy66 Do you not realize that this is in a fucking classroom or that it was the FIRST TIME I ever stuck someone with a needle, I was nervous. Jesus.
I'd like to suggest one thing to all the people who have criticized you, listen to the camera person! NO ONE should be telling you what to do like that! It made her 'freak' out a little and she then messed up. The people around you, especially the camera person should keep their mouths shut. Leaving the touriquet on after removing the needle isn't going to KILL the patient. It will result in a bruise, it's not life threatening!!
It is the main reason why she 'waved' the needle around after.
i think you need more dummy arm practice before you stick again...with this type of procedure theres no room for mistakes. alwaya palpate before you clean, and always plant the vein to avoid rolling.
@DallasCowboys1776 Was all of that really necessary? I know how to do it. I was friend with the kid when I was doing this and it was the first time I had stuck someone.

u should really move faster next time and less joking around make the patient feel comfortable and ALWAYS pop the tourniquet before pulling out

8) Once you have your specimen(s)(keep in mind to mix tubes)apply folded gauze and ask patient to apply pressure.
9) Label your tubes correctly and bandage patient.
10)Thank patient and transport specimen(s) to the lab(e.g on ice if LA or AMM or protected from ligh such as a bilirubin.)
DallasCowboys1776 3 years ago
Ok, there are steps to be taken.
1)Introduce yourself, ask permission, and wash/ put on gloves.
2)Apply tourniquet and palpate for the best vein.
3)Remove tourniquet (should not be on longer for one minute.)
4)Clean site, and let it air dry.
5) Prep equiptment, and ask patient if it feels dry to avoid hemolysis of blood, and or stinging of the site.
6) Reapply tourniquet, take cap off needle and insert.
7)Upon good blood flow remove tourniquet.

have you started working as a phelbotomist yet? i take my board in 6 days yay!
lesha1122 3 years ago
it looked like you were about to cut the patient's face with the needle. You should have disposed of it immediately once you've finished drawing.
