@MrRiblet ...well not one to go barkin up my own versions; but thanx for the view & comment. With any luck I'll be an old senile SOB & have somebody to look out for me that way...who am I crappin...I already AM and old senile SOB...haha
I can never hear or sing this song without crying my eyes out! How about that love between Margaret and her Alzheimer-effected husband as she and he live out their lives? I'll bet there are a lot of Margarets out there . . . bless them all.
I don't know if this is the greatest song ever written, but it is surely my favorite. After 25 years, I still miss Steve, and the songs he never got to write.
@wizardofwaste Steve was sick all of his adult life according to John Prine , and still wrote the songs he wrote sang the songs he did, and touched deeply people's live's RIP Steve! and Thanks!! Eddie Black
@PMK1002 Thanx Pyro I didn't know of the performance vid until after I made this one. So I sent that one to you in part for the Jethro Burns mandolin playing. Goodman was indeed a Chicago treasure and still greatly missed today
daddyo I LOVE this video and tune. How creative! I've never heard The Dutchman before which is a crime being of Dutch linage. Very moving. Touched my heart! dank u
... TY LO retta...I knew if I left the lawnchair out, you'd drop by;) Heck my folks are Danish so we're practically cousins
Musician like Steve Goodman & John Prine were local heros to me as a kid....which the next closest thing to it today, is coming out of Texas...which is why I enjoy your channel & great postings of Joe & Butch & all
Thnx JP for the view & nice comment...funny you should mention John Denver, who actually had one of his biggest hits off a Seve Goodman song. It was classic americana"City of New Orleans" circa 1972 or so...Steve had been diagnosed with Leukemia and Denver offered to record the tune on his next album. Problem was he changed the lyrics to suit homogenized AM radio. Well Arlo Guthrie found out about it and nearly kicked Denver's ass, til he coughed up royalties; then did a version of his own.
Beautiful! Great job on one of my faves. I used to catch Steve at the Amazing Grace coffee house in Evanston - back in the day...

This is a capsule of why I was so glad I lived in Chicago in the 70's. When Steve passed on I felt like I'd lost a huge chunk of my youth.
