With all the incredible story-songs that Harry did, it seems almost `silly to remember him by this one; yet, it's the first one I remember in 1976, and I saw it performed live in a 2 and one half hour concert in a tiny venue in South Carolina, with Harry sitting not ten feet in front of me. It was magical, and I cherish that experience to this day.
Yes, many times, I in fact had tickets to see him here in NJ on 7/19/81, he was killed on the 16th. I never turned in the tickets for a refund. Always used to meet him after the show.
@b55k57 I was a big Harry Chapin fan in college. My friend Don took me to see him play there in November of 1979 for my birthday, and it turns out that Harry had the same birthday I do. So then it became a tradition to see Harry at U of I in November (for some reason he always came and sang there for our birthday), although Don never paid for it again. I'll tell you this--our audiences were never lame like this one!
@hntrman1962 : I saw one of his concerts in St. Louis. My date & I were up in the cheap seats. He referred to the people down front as the "tragically hip!".
Yes, I was aware of that when I wrote the comment. I didn't mean "it's a shame" as a condemnation of the audience for not knowing English, and I bore them no ill will. I meant it more abstractly than that.

Silly song, but great performance!
Horrible audience, was he performing to the Christian Youth? Or maybe Zombies?

Harry was born one year to the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked: Dec. 7, 1942

@b55k57 And he was born one week less than one year after me. In other words, I was born on Dec. 14, 1941.

That audience looked lame. Not even into it. Shameful.

That was such a good performance. It's a shame the audience didn't get more into it.

@chevanc
It was in Germany. They had no idea what he was singing in English.
