About this whole microphone issue, do you hear any problems with the recording? Listen to the actual song a few times, I don't think there was an issue and that's what actually matters.
@SophieCharlemagne honestly....and besides, god forbid jonsi has to get in the booth for a few vocal takes IF his mic adjustment actually 'ruined' those vocal takes....i dont think they were in that giant hall to get a nice room sound on his voice, people.........youtube is depressing.
My point was that he's done so much recording on his own that he knows where the mic should be in order to get the right sound. Hence I his words: "I think mic placement is really important. I spend quite a lot of time just moving mics slightly to get the right sound." If he knows this, do you really think he would move the mic for no reason? And he probably got confirmation that it sounded alright. I could bet money that he didn't get "told" not to do it again. He IS a sound technician.

I'm sorry, but who the f**k does Jonsi think he is at 2:13 walking over and moving the placement of the microphone at ABBEY ROAD. If he knew anything about recording, he would know that moving a hot condenser microphone that is recording is going to create all kinds of crap they'll have to delete, and more importantly, he has NO BUSINESS moving it in the first place as even if he was a GREAT recording engineer (which is extremely unlikely) the engineers at Abbey Road are better. What a jackass
@blaukah actaully elderon87 has a point.. there is no way Jonsi has a clue how to handle such a delicate (and freaking expensive) mic like that by the way goes at it and there is also no way he could know if it sounds better from where he's standing.. the engineers need to be doing it..
See the other comments on here if you haven't already. Jonsi adjusting the mic actually goes to show what a master he is. He's not like some other stars who are escorted to the spotlight and don't know a thing about what's going on around them. He's had to build his band from the ground up, and because he's so particular, has been involved in every aspect. Listen to the incredibly subtle self-made "Riceboy Sleeps" to get a sense of that.
@Yoshi5020 you fucking idiot.. have you worked in a serious studio before ??? i did for years and i can tell you he would have been told (nicely) not to do that again.. think about it.. he can't "hear" what the mic picks up can he ?? so how would he know where to move it to ?? he was so rough too.. i shuddered.. those mics costs thousands, even 10K + for a vintage classic and they are fragile.. the "talent" isn't encouraged to touch them believe you me.. but whatever.. keep making shit up.
@elderon87 lol... what have you said? are you serious? I'm not even telling you anything about that stupid comment, I'm sure other people will reply to you telling you the bunch of crap you just said... that's really sad.
@elderon87 What you saw wasn't the actual take. This one started from the beginning of the buildup. The full recording is here on youtube. He doesn't mess with the mic on that one.
@elderon87 Actually, he does know a bit about mics, being a musician and all, and building their own studio. Froum the sound on sound article he writes: ""i think mic placement is really important. i spend quite a lot of time just moving mics slightly to get the right sound. you have to experiment with mic all over the place. we had mics up in the roof, up close, all in different places. we're always moving the mics slightly to get the sound that we like...."
I'm impressed that the band and conductor weren't using a click track at the end, it would've been hard for the average Joe not to speed up (that said, these guys are way beyond average!)
