As an Canadian immigrant myself, I know exactly what he means. When we first set foot here in Canada we are treated basically with contempt by some people (too many people actually). Most people don't know a thing about the immigration process and they tend to have a very narrow view of it.
After awhile people start to respect us once they see that we are are here to stay and that we are nice people (at least most of us).
