College libraries, relaxing?! Ha! More like a never-ending fight for desks. With people moving your stuff onto the floor if you're gone for longer than a minute. Sigh. (I do miss it, though.)
Btw, not true that the UL has 'every book ever'. Actually, they have about half of the books that the British Library has (7m titles relative to the BL's 14m; the Bodleian in Oxford has about 10m). This is because a copy of every book published in the UK *must* be sent to the BL, but the university libraries reserve the right to refuse books if they feel they wont be needed.
Paper libraries are bunk. I'm amazed that people think it is going to be like this in even the short term future.
How do you search through a paper book, and what is the point of becoming good at doing it when a computer will do it so much better ? It is not a skill worth acquiring.
You really think computers can be substitute for real books? Well sorry to tell you but you're wrong. Do you really think that computers can help you become more skillful and more inteligent by doing all the work instead of you? No wonder our generations are being more and more stupid. If every computer in this world was to be shut down forever we wouldn't even know what to do. And that's sad.
I like gadgets, and I believe computers have transformed our society but I've yet to see a good old fashioned book run out of power or suffer hard drive crash or RAM failure or stolen. Books will always be around. However I do agree that a laptop or E-Book is a lot lighter to carry compared to several volumes of 'History Of Roman Empire' etc....
@CamTheCurious It's a variety - Fitzwilliam, Homerton, Clare colleges, English faculty library, law faculty library, and the main University library to name but a few.

because a paper book does not give me eyestrain. and because being at a computer will never feel like being at work. for me, in any case.

Why do I now feel guilty that I never entered any library at Cam except to photocopy stuff in my entire first year?
