Just for the record, I was in country 66-67 and 69-70. I agree there were some units that had more drug users than others and I know of some officers that used drugs. I am not some "holier than thou" type who thinks I am better than anyone else, but, contrary to your comment, it is a big deal to me and I don't want to be whitewashed as a pothead. By mid/late 1972, troops at my base were smoking pot openly in the barracks in the evenings. I recall seeing the 1st Sgt making his rounds to check on the troops. He'd poke his head into their smoke-filled cubicles as they sat around passing joints and bonging away. He'd have a brief chat with them and then go on his way. By that time, I think the Army was just glad their troops weren't doing heroin.

I don't know when and where you were in VN, but by 1971 well over 50% of the enlisted men in my unit (most held top secret clearances) smoked marijuana daily. Frankly, I can't recall knowing any enlisted man who DIDN'T smoke! I even saw a number of officers walking alone down the roads at night with a joint's tell-tale 'tracers' falling to the ground. Few troops smoked during duty hours, though... unless the duty was night perimeter defense... that was a perfect excuse to party all night long.
