Notice at 1:07 when the two wolves in the background have a little rumble. The wolf on his back is submissive and all seems well, but at 1:19 he steps out of line and snaps at the other wolf as he moves off, who then snarls back and raises his hackles. The wolf on the ground immediately drops his ears, avoids eye contact and starts flicking his tongue out, all appeasing behaviours. Interestingly, the dominant wolf also flicks his tongue out to calm the situation.

Well, what can I say: they really are just dogs. If you learn their language and play by their rules, they are great friends. Just like most dogs, really. We are intelligent humans, so it is easier for us to learn to speak dog than it is for them to learn to speak human.

@DarkHari I'm sure I read once that licking anothers mouth is a sign of appeasement. A submissive wolf or dog will do it to the dominant pack member. Puppies do it to their mothers or owners, as it's also a way of signaling hunger.

Wolf and canine behaviour is absolutely fascinating :) they have so many subtle ways of communicating, and if you know what to look for your dog will always tell you what he or she is feeling.
