@SonofBlackDefiance The song was written and as far as I know first recorded by Eric Bogle, a Scot who'd emigrated to Australia, and is just one of the various songs he's written about the futility of war. He wrote No Mans land (which the Irish insist on calling Willie McBride or Green Fields of France); as well as All The Fine Young Men; and The Band Played Waltzin Matilda. AFAIK he specifically doesn't say which side the son is on because it was about the waste of lives on both sides!

Hell, Bogle was even careful to remain non-committal in the lyrics as to whether it was a republican or a loyalist who died.

Eric Bogle, who wrote the song, would be truly saddened by some of the comments below. It is true the song was inspired by the conflict in Ireland, but it does not take sides. It is a sad reflection on all the young men who are needlessly killed, in all wars, whatever their nationality.
