I read today in newScientist that N1H1 infected many more than previously thought. It seems that either the virus had nil symptoms, moderate symptoms or was deadly.

This suggest that there is a deadly form which may yet still break out into the population. This would be consistent with what happened in the pandemics. At first people though those were over and a false alarm too.. then the curve for mortality began to rise again.

It may not happen, but it is foolish to rule this out.

It's hard to accurately predict the severity of a brand new strain. Sure, the WHO sounded the alarms and countries stock-piled the vaccines en masse. They were preparing for the worst! A few months back, we started to see that symptoms and mortality rates were fairly moderate, even less than the seasonal flu. That was a great surprise and everyone was relieved. Now you want to blame the WHO for over-prepping? If the pandemic was worse and many died, they'd be blamed for not doing enough.

Yes, but there wasn't one magic day where everyone woke up and realized it was fairly harmless. This happened gradually. What scared everyone (and why they called it a pandemic) is because it's a brand new virus that nobody's ogranism is resistant to. It's easy to play Monday-morning quarterback and mock the WHO after the scare winds down, but everyone would be singing a different tune if the virus had been worse and more people died. How could they have known in advance? It's a new virus!

No. I contracted the virus, as did my two kids. Somehow my wife resisted it completely. Had I been given the occasion early on to get the vaccine, I would have. But towards the end, when it became obvious that the virus was mostly harmless, I wouldn't have bothered. I never get the seasonal flu shot either. Not because I'm paranoid about vaccines but because I think the risks and consequences of getting the flu aren't such a big deal - not worth a trip to the doctors.

This flu strain has never been dangerous and there is no evidence to think that it ever will be any more dangerous that the seasonal flu. The vaccine on the other hand is another story. Do some research on all the toxins such as mercury that are added to the vaccine "for our benefit".
