I've said it before, and I'll say it again. While it may be "aww...cute!", the WORST thing you can do for your dachshund is to have it stand on his hind legs. It compresses his/her spine, leading to slipped disks, arthritis and even fractured spines and permanent paralysis of the hind quarters. DON'T DO IT!

@raoleso- Actually that's starting to be questioned, because some veterinarians are now saying that sitting up like that for short periods of time actually helps to strengthen their back muscles- makes sense!

@jillgrace While it is true some veterinarians believe that, their belief doesn't change the fact that the statistics are more damaging than helpful in this regard. More Doxies end up having problems than ones that are okay with it. I provide foster home care for abused and abandoned Doxies. To date, I have seen roughly 50 doxies that required back surgery, physical therapy, and even wheel carts due to injury of their spine and hind quarters. So again, dont' let your doxy stand up, PLEASE.

I know what you mean. Ya wouldnt think the mini dachshunds could. But the original standard sized dachshunds , who weigh twice as much maybe would be able to, Id guess.
