For the purposes of this project, I had to be able to relate to the broadest part of the YouTube community. Yes, this included using IE on this video and Windows (as well as Windows programs) in other videos.
Personally, I use Linux rather than Windows. I dread using IE and generally use either Firefox or Konqueror.
Luckily the project is now over, so maybe there'll be a little more "variation" from the "norm". ;)
i got an linksys wrt54g version 5 sn: CDFB0EBC1257 and im on a 100mbits fiber optic connection. i was wondering what kind of speed can i gain by doing this? can i gain range on the router? i was thinking about useing it as a wireless ap for my network in my closset. its kinda hot there can i run an 12volts fan on the routers power adapter without overloading something? please give me feedback sens you done this and i havent.
I have a WRT54G but when I use it. It cuts off the internet and Makes my computer slow or people hack my computer. I'm trying to get my Nintendo DS on WI-FI so I can play Pokemon Diamond online with my friends. What do I do to ensure that I can play WI-FI without harming the computer.
Sounds like you have a few issues you need to take care of before you take this on. Change the default password on the router to something else - use passwords that can't be easily guessed (non-dictionary words at the least). Don't open up attachments from strange people, use an up-to-date antivirus program (FreeAVG maybe?), or better yet just ditch Windows and use Linux and you won't have to worry about any of the above (well, except the password thing :P)
I didn't provide specific links because different people use different routers that require different versions. You'll have to check the DD-WRT web site for your specific router/version combo.
It's been pretty trusty for me :) The only thing I've done is upgrade the RAM to 1 gig. Been running linux and xp since the day I bought it. I use Windows for most of my videos since that seems to be what the majority of people use.
ey how are you ....my question is ...i got a router wrt54g but lost my cd, and i got another computer and i cant install it again , let me know if you know how???
You will have to go to the DD-WRT web site. I know they support other routers, but you'll have to check for yourself to see if your router is supported.
Is it possible to apply bandwidth throttling using this router ?
Often I want to allocate about 150kb/s to each of my 3 computers and leave the remaining bandwidth to my file sharing/serving computer because when I start my file share application -- web browsing is extremely slow even though my file share application is using less than 20% of available upload and download bandwidth.
I have a rubbish Sitecom WL-122
Do you know of any average priced routers that are good at bandwidth throttling ?
The DD-WRT firmware allows web site/keyword filtering (great for blocking ads, parental controls, etc), port filtering by client (to prevent kids from using IM or filesharing on default ports), time restrictions (for example, no internet access past 10pm for specific LAN clients), and QoS to throttle some traffic (file sharing) while allowing other traffic through at a faster rate (web surfing, gaming, etc).
The WRT54G already has antennas. I'm assuming this is probably in references to my wardriving videos :) For wardriving, an antenna is not necessary - I've never used one.
thanks i installed it without having to use tftp (install the mini version then install the full ontop of that..) whatever i did seemed seemed to work...
thanks again for the video and its good to see the project is still in development!
You can tftp through the command prompt (Start->Run->type in "cmd") as windows has a tftp client built in. Just cd to the directory where you have the bin file at and type "tftp -i 192.168.1.1 put dd-wrt.v24_micro_wrt54gv8.bin". Replace dd-wrt.v24_micro_wrt54gv8.bin with the name of the bin file you're using.
DD-WRT is still alive and well. It's been a while since the last stable release, but the latest release candidate came out in January of 2008. Take care!
You don't REALLY use IE do you?

Hope this one makes it. Will this work with the WRT54G version 5.0?
prkofrdg 3 years ago
According to the DD-WRT web site, version 5.0 is supported. Check the site for which binaries you need to grab for your installation.

Unfortunately, my laptop has integrated video. Yeah, it sucks, but I don't play games on it anyway...though it would be nice once in a while...

It would help if you provided links to download the stuff you need to do this

You do not need any software to setup a router, you can configure the router by logging into to router and make your desired changes.
Gispero 3 years ago
do you have to have a linksys to do this or is it for all routers?
