Even in the Soviet Union people could choose their jobs. You could refuse to be a doctor, engineer, etc but then you'd be stuck with farming. Also, I think socialism saves rather than kills people. Since everyone recieves fair pay, no one will be unable to afford food (unlike the US where 15-20% of people are on food stamps).
