Bet they haven't seen The Wire. That's real T.V. but unfortunately all we pay for on the BBC is shite. It's very rare something intelligent like Charlie Brooker and a few other shows (Life on Mars and Family Guy, to name a few) actually appear on the T.V. channels we pay for.
So Charlie clearly picked a group of upperclass kids, and asked them aload of leading questions to get the answers he wants... Dont get his point as people obviously watch them lame programs. However hes still a funny bastard
It's like movies. Nowadays, all Hollywood tosh has to appeal to at least two demographics, meaning that absolutely everything has some romance shoehorned in and a few explosions for good measure. If they could just stop being neurotic about "target groups", relax and just make some good shows, TV (and movies) would be a thousand times more awesome.

@TemperatureIndicator Agreed, although you forgot to mention the IT Crowd which is, in my opinion, one of the most genuinely funny shows I've ever watched. @loszhor After watching all episodes of "Screenwipe" and "Newswipe", I looked up Adam Curtis' documentaries since Charlie made several references to them. People have got to remember that this was broadcast after only the first series of Skins had been aired (which was by far the best series), so it doesn't reflct attitudes re. the more recent series.
That documentary is not so much they were interested in more factual content, just that it was clearly trying to be a bit sensationalist in a "things-are-not-what-they-seem" almost conspiratorial way; that would've held the attention of even my Angry Birds-addled cranium.
I do quite like Skins, it is my guilty pleasure because I know that it's so unlikely to ever happen to anyone. The storylines are exaggerated ( people who are gay, have eating disorders and disabilities in the same group for example) and the comedy sometimes feels strained, but it is at least better than watching somethiing like The Jeremy Kyle Show.
Was the children interview supposed to be boring? I mean ffs, I ended up disliking the asian girl who was interviewd. Massive liar and such a bitch as well.
the longest video watched was about a documentary showing that al'qaeda and global terrorism is actually media invented and hyped, one big pile of bullshit
The reason stuff like Blackadder, Fawlty Towers, Father Ted etc won't be replicated is because that sort of thing in this 'post Russell Brand' era in which the media bangs on about like fucking 9/11 would NEVER get past the censors.
nearly all of these people seem to eager to please, sort of "I watch high brow entertainment an want everyone to know". So it just come across as pretentious... especially that one in the god awful green/blue flowery shit tshirt. Although I WOULD watch that Adam Curtis documentary, that's because I'm a history student, not because I'd want everyone to know about it and show off about my "intellectual" interests. I know plenty of people who left school at GCSE and love supersweet16 (sadly)
That test does not work, they know what Charlie Brooker is looking for, and force themselves to watch a more political program to make themselves seem more intellectual.
@eddyc09 the only clips I've found on YouTube 'Devvo' which was a segment from the show. However it seems to be lost on the internet, maybe thats a good thing haha
@andremp03 'devvo' was pretty big on the internet years before his appearance on whatever, they tried to get him on tv but it didnt work out, might have been because producers took devvo litterally and didnt get the joke, thus landing it in whatever heh
Honestly, does nothing please people, half the time you go on about how air-headed teens are, and then when they actually say something smart and insiteful, you call them pretentious.
This exactly nails the problem - teenagers are often actually pretty intelligent and intellectual. I like The Politics of Fear, it was on Newswipe I think, it was great.
Inbetweeners, that IS teenage life, if not a little (just a little) over-dramatised, it is peep show ( with everything great about it ) meets skins ( and everything bad about it taken away, which is a lot ) nails it perfectly on the head.
@cmwissy I know, I rather hated the third series, but I still believe it is more appropiate to represent 16-19 age group as opposed to skins or any other show I can think of. Like I said, it has the idiotic choices that we all make now and then mixed in with drama situations far from the norm, I don't think I ever had a single girl related scenario with any of my friends like most shows do but swearing, relaxing, arguing, bragging, saying blatantly idiotic things...twas every day :)
@SempreSami *Chuckle* Aye, I'd hardly be the best ambassador, although in my list of the activities I wasn't the one getting up to all of them, I had one friend who was the bragger and expected everyone to bow down at his feet, another who was a plain idiot but a really nice guy and the arguments never stopped with the one guy who thought he was better than everybody else, but getting high on drugs, pissed in forests and be general fucktards was not our style, such as in skins.
Many people say Skins is the scourge on modern society. And for those at home who don't know what scorurge means; it means very bad thing. What a cynical patronising wanker I am. Word.
I'm 16, and I only watch documentaries and lots and lots of comedy (I mean GOOD comedy like Dads Army, Only Fools and Horses, Father Ted ect ect ect.) and panel shows.
I am the only person at my school who despises everything about Skins. What a shit show it is.
@TheMikeyReilly I feel your pain. I was born in 1993, and I completely resent Skins as incomprehensibly stupid, superficial, arrogant and asinine. It is an enraging and repulsive reflection of unbelievable idiocy and failure. Those buying into it in pressured and weakminded uniformity I cannot express my hatred of.
@TheMikeyReilly i used to looove skins cuz it was riske, and made american teen dramas look like sesame street, but then I slapped myself in the face & came to my senses. teen dramas are reality shows like the hills are seriously fucked up.......but i still sadly watch some of them. Guilty pleasures :( :P
Skins is NOT well-written. It's pathetic and gives adults the wrong idea about teenagers today. We wonder why adults don't trust us, it's becuase of the shitty sterotypes given out by that pathetic programme. Now, The Inbetweeners? The kids in that are more like real teenagers than anyone in Skins.
Y'know, knowing that these guys like decent programmes rather than inane bullwank isn't really going to help tv execs decide on what types of programmes to fund. There are quite a few really friggin' awesome shows on telly but the yoof (forgive my lisp) arn't watching them because...well, there's probably a bunch of reasons, e.g. noone's home when the show's on, the internet as a substitute for tv etc etc etc.....
Skins is bad. Its soo unrealistic, but without being dramatized properly, but the sad thing is all my friends say they want life to be like that. Which is weird because the main characters are happy with drugs and sex and are totally unlikable and spoiled. The inbetweeners is better, since the average teen (even person) spends almost their entire life telling jokes rather than acting like smug dickheads. It's a shame my generation will rule the world in 20 years time, it really is.
@whikless I couldn't agree more, I'm from aus and they brought skins out on television and I can't stand it..I really don't understand it at all, I find the plots stupid; And personally, i find it about as realistic as shrek(though shrek at least puts in a moral or two)..Ive sat and watched Inbetweeners over and over again, it's brilliant! They act like teenage boys trying to live a normal day to day life without embarassing themselves too badly..And I'd rather Simon over any blokes in Skins!
@whikless That's balls, ok a lot of the people on it are more attractive than is realistic, and sometimes it get's a bit abstract, but it's got to be the fairest representation of teenage life i've seen in a long time while still managing to be incredibly powerful and funny. The inbetweeners is good too, as a comedy, but if you wan't to talk about unrealism, that show has shitloads. What kind of sixteen year old can't get served? honestly
Interesting that people on here are complaining when teenagers are effectively thick sheep and also complain when they come across as at least semi-intelligent people with their own opinions. What the fuck do you want from them? But, more importantly-why do you give a shit?
Sadly, you can't apply this statistical sample to the entire population. This crowd, for the most part, seemed pretty mature and down to earth. But I just watched an episode of Nevermind the Buzzcocks with Dappy from Ndups (sic?) and if that guy is popular with the yoof, then there is something seriously wrong. Charlie was on it too, class...
Sorta confirms what I always knew. It's not the 'yoof' who are stupid, it's the out-of-touch tv execs who haven't a bloody clue and simply put out dumbed down nonsense thinking we all want to see some Topman-clad cocky gobshite know-nothing on the screen and can't bare anything remotely serious. As a teenager, seeing this sort of thing on T4 etc only served to insult my intelligence.
As for comedy, give my Brass Eye or Black Books over Whatever anytime
Thumbs down all you want, you know I'm right. Pretentious teenagers and their smug raised eyebrows when they attempt to sound intelligent are annoying.
This may be because I'm a pretentious teenager, and, well, yes, I do find them annoying, but not nearly as much as the utter idiot teenagers who are incapable of independent thought and just spout whatever their bigot parents and the yoof media wants them to. You know who I'm talking about. People with Facebook profiles that say 'Loves: 2pints! Soooo funny!! Hates: Immigrnats!' I'd rather be stuck in a room with a teen who professes to have read En Recherche du Temps Perdu. (No-one has).
I genuinely don't think they're TRYING to sound intelligent. I'm 16 and I hate how 'Whatever' represents us as an age group. Plus Black Books, Father Ted and Blackadder are genius :P
Current teenagers are better educated on average than any preceding generation, but the media, composed mostly of people who think they must be better because they are old, are extremely patronising. Teenagers just want adult programs thank you.

Honestly, does nothing please people, half the time you go on about how air-headed teens are, and then when they actually say something smart and insiteful, you call them pretentious.

I just don't watch television because anything that's not telling me something I don't already know doesn't really hold my interest.

This exactly nails the problem - teenagers are often actually pretty intelligent and intellectual. I like The Politics of Fear, it was on Newswipe I think, it was great.
coruscantplanet 1 year ago 3
Inbetweeners, that IS teenage life, if not a little (just a little) over-dramatised, it is peep show ( with everything great about it ) meets skins ( and everything bad about it taken away, which is a lot ) nails it perfectly on the head.
RandyRedCactus 1 year ago 5
@RandyRedCactus
Inbetweeners is a load of toss, every other joke is about cocks or tits. It's not intelligent, it's every thing we should hate about yoof culture.
cmwissy 1 year ago
@cmwissy I know, I rather hated the third series, but I still believe it is more appropiate to represent 16-19 age group as opposed to skins or any other show I can think of. Like I said, it has the idiotic choices that we all make now and then mixed in with drama situations far from the norm, I don't think I ever had a single girl related scenario with any of my friends like most shows do but swearing, relaxing, arguing, bragging, saying blatantly idiotic things...twas every day :)
RandyRedCactus 1 year ago
@RandyRedCactus Thankfully you don't speak for all teenagers.
SempreSami 1 year ago
@SempreSami *Chuckle* Aye, I'd hardly be the best ambassador, although in my list of the activities I wasn't the one getting up to all of them, I had one friend who was the bragger and expected everyone to bow down at his feet, another who was a plain idiot but a really nice guy and the arguments never stopped with the one guy who thought he was better than everybody else, but getting high on drugs, pissed in forests and be general fucktards was not our style, such as in skins.
RandyRedCactus 1 year ago
Many people say Skins is the scourge on modern society. And for those at home who don't know what scorurge means; it means very bad thing. What a cynical patronising wanker I am. Word.
johnedsel 1 year ago 6
I'm 16, and I only watch documentaries and lots and lots of comedy (I mean GOOD comedy like Dads Army, Only Fools and Horses, Father Ted ect ect ect.) and panel shows.
I am the only person at my school who despises everything about Skins. What a shit show it is.
TheMikeyReilly 1 year ago 12
@TheMikeyReilly I feel your pain. I was born in 1993, and I completely resent Skins as incomprehensibly stupid, superficial, arrogant and asinine. It is an enraging and repulsive reflection of unbelievable idiocy and failure. Those buying into it in pressured and weakminded uniformity I cannot express my hatred of.
NosdrahcirBocaj 7 months ago

I forget where I was going with this...
Oh yeah, and Brooker's awesome.

CrEaTiVeEnErGy18 10 months ago
@whikless That's balls, ok a lot of the people on it are more attractive than is realistic, and sometimes it get's a bit abstract, but it's got to be the fairest representation of teenage life i've seen in a long time while still managing to be incredibly powerful and funny. The inbetweeners is good too, as a comedy, but if you wan't to talk about unrealism, that show has shitloads. What kind of sixteen year old can't get served? honestly
cybercheeseburger 9 months ago
Interesting that people on here are complaining when teenagers are effectively thick sheep and also complain when they come across as at least semi-intelligent people with their own opinions. What the fuck do you want from them? But, more importantly-why do you give a shit?

Is that "Whatever" show real? If so, that's really scary.
MerckZ 2 years ago 5

Jcahalane 2 years ago 10
This may be because I'm a pretentious teenager, and, well, yes, I do find them annoying, but not nearly as much as the utter idiot teenagers who are incapable of independent thought and just spout whatever their bigot parents and the yoof media wants them to. You know who I'm talking about. People with Facebook profiles that say 'Loves: 2pints! Soooo funny!! Hates: Immigrnats!' I'd rather be stuck in a room with a teen who professes to have read En Recherche du Temps Perdu. (No-one has).
captainpanic08 2 years ago 5
Most teenagers are little more than glorified cattle who just follow everyone else and end up giving us a bad name.
Jcahalane 2 years ago 6
This is true. To be honest I think that can be extended to people in general.
captainpanic08 2 years ago 4
Skins starts again tonight. Are you all ready for another surge in Topman sales and teenage alcohol related deaths? Well I sure am!
Jcahalane 2 years ago 7
Thing is, if Charlie bought in 12-16 year olds the results would have been totally different.
I hate being stereotyped into 14 :(

Thank you Mr brooker. Right as always.
Current teenagers are better educated on average than any preceding generation, but the media, composed mostly of people who think they must be better because they are old, are extremely patronising. Teenagers just want adult programs thank you.
