You want flawless watch an over of Glenn McGrath when he used to play. Every ball, same runup, same action, same release, same line and length ball after ball after ball. Get Dale Steyn to do that and then you can brag to the rest of the uneducated world about how flawless his bowling action is.
Yeah, that's why he was so often seen trudging back to long leg muttering to himself, practicing his action and shaking his head. Don't get me wrong, McGrath was an amazing bowler; one of the all time greats, but perfect he was not. Additionally, acknowledging that Steyn has a great bowling action (simply flawless is clearly hyperbole in this context) in no way negates anything that McGrath did. Are you just upset that the best fast bowler in the world isn't Australian?
with a bigger jump u get more pace, bounce and swing but less control while with a smaller jump u get more accuracy and control. steyn obviously found a way to get all of it with a big jump
@Gtbabiee69 Incidentally, don't you notice that the fastest bowlers are the one with simple, clean actions (note that this does not eliminate the chuckers) and not to much of the "arm twirling." So ultimately, I think that bowling fast is not so much how fast you can rotate you arms but is more to do with making sure that all the power you generate from your action is imparted to the ball rather than wasted somewhere else (i.e. like the "arm twirlers").
@Gtbabiee69 Best bowling actions are (in no particular order): Akhtar, Lee, and Tait. The reason is that their action are so efficient that most of the "power" from their actions is efficiently imparted into the ball. For eg., consider someone like Pramodya Wickramasinghe, where all the "useless" energy of the "arms twirling" is wasted and compare it with Akhtar who just pulls the arm back and lets fire (more direct power imparted into the ball).
guys i have tried to copy dale steyn's action...and results have been prety good fr me... dnt noe but his action just seems to suit me... and i have been bowling better than ever before...the only tricky part is his wrist position... whch is pretty good and if u get it right u can get some good outswingers.... :D
@aaqucnaona94 actually he bowls off the correct foot. His left foot is always infront at the release of the ball. This allows his right leg to follow through after the left leg is braced. I believe u have mixed it up there buddy.
Steyn gets good pace from his action, but he also get seam, inswing and away swing. And then occasionally changes pace for good measure.
Sometimes he is actually too good. In teh last test series aginst India, several commentators (SA and Indian) said that was two innings of the best pace bowling they had ever seen. Even Tendulkar was clueless as to how to counter it. But it swung away so viciously, it kept missing the bat! Tendulkar got 146, and Steyn got only a couple of wickets.
All of you guys seriously are fucking retards, I doubt any of you guys play cricket or some of you are the worst at cricket. Why don't you try bowling like dale steyn and try chuck it? see how hard it is you fuck heads. and i bet most of you guys are australian fans
hahaha high jump ? lol the points is to jump towards the target nd not to "jump high " because thats were u loose your momentem ,nd jumping high would not explain why steyn sckides the ball of the pitch . just putting in wat the provincial bowling coach told me
Hang time is vital (not so much neight - or even length for that matter) You need to be rotating the hip, getting your leading arm high and your bowling arm into the right position.
When you engage the chest on landing - if you have not prepared hips and arms correctly you will lose a lot of pace (and accuracy)
Lo't of younger bowlers engage their "pull through~" from the chest far too early - when the bowling arm is horizontal to the ground - or even lower
Start the pull when your arm is about 11 o clock (just behind perpendicular) at this point the leading arm should still be high enough to "help" and add power to the action. Often guys leading arms are already down by their hips when the bowling arm needs it most.
Front on can be easier you are not bowling "around" your waist - but side on makes better use of the body.
Steyn pulls the hips through from side on VERY strongly squaring them at the point of release getting the best of both.
@CSH373 considering Steyn is the top test bowler in the world right now, and has not had many injuries. I find that hard to believe, lol. Just stating the facts here.
@CricDilan007 i think its due to the fact that you land hard when you release, steyn will pay the price later on in his career for the heavy landings,, especially through his ankles and knees, but so wil eveyone so who gives a crap
@CricDilan007 No I meant that his front foot is still in air when he releases the ball as compared to say, Glen McGrath or Brett lee who ground BOTH their legs before releasing the ball. See the video: 'Cricketcoachingblog Brett lee bowling action'.
@CSH373 some of the best bowlers ever had high jump .. Allan Donald, Waqar Younus, Brett Lee and Dale Steyn him self there the only ones that come to mind atm.. wont see many express bowlers without a high jump unless its a catapult sorta action
@CSH373 well it is and it isnt, by having the high jump and bracing hard on the left leg you open youreself up to back problems but by having a low jump you open youreself up to knee problems
All these South African cricketers have the Allan Donald bowling style. Maybe the Great Allan Donald set the stage for bowling. I loved watching Donald bowl. One of the best I have ever seen in my whole life. Dale Steyn appears to be equally good as Allan. Good one there mate.
ignorant fucks! he doesn't chuck at all, he cocks his wrist to change the angle of the delivery or to assist his inswing, he certainly doesn't chuck the ball, Whoever thinks he does, doesn't understand the mechanics of fast bowling, is blind or is jealous.
@emproar02 go search pubmed or any journal database, look at biomechanics of bowling and you will see that its nigh on impossible to bowl without any extension of the elbow, its just to what degree it extends.
and i saw him bowl against england in 2008 and his action is flawless, uses the wrist so well to get that extra yard of pace.
if you want a true look at his action, why not look at his bowling during the series against WI in south Africa....you know the one when Gayle had a broken finger and still came out to bat. Look at when Steyn tries to bowl faster....he can't help but chuck
@emproar02 90% world bowlers get accused of chucking, what you say doesnt come as surprise. Steyn's best fast bowler in the world by far. and thats that.
@emproar02 It's physically impossible to bowl without chuck if you're bowling at above 80mp/H, and you may want to look at it more carefully, because if it's noticeable, it's probably hyper extension, whereby the arm bends backwards.
@pacus123 Shane Bond's arm appears straight, and I agree is straighter than most arms. I'm sure if you were to analyse his action in Hi-motion you would see a certain amount of give in his arm, which is natural. Even bowlers like Stuart Broad, whose arm appears poker straight in real time, can be seen to chuck a bit in slow motion.
